A Programmable Mems Bandpass Filter., Sotirios. Diamantis Jan 2001

A Programmable Mems Bandpass Filter., Sotirios. Diamantis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design and simulation of a programmable microelectromechanical (MEMS) filter based on using coupled microresonators is described in this research. The filter consists of two mechanical resonators interconnected by a square-truss coupling spring. A special parallel-plate type geometry has been incorporated into the filter design to afford programmability capability. Both lumped parameter methods based on the use of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and finite element methods (FEA) based on the actual three-dimensional geometry have been employed in the analysis of the filter. A MEMS based filter with a programmable bandwidth of thirty percent was achieved.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. …

Auditory Model Implementation For Speech Application., Jie. Zhang Jan 2001

Auditory Model Implementation For Speech Application., Jie. Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The motivation for investigating spectral analysis methods that are physiologically based is to gain an understanding of how the human auditory system processes speech, so as to be able to design and implement robust, efficient methods of analyzing and representing speech. In this thesis the cochlear filter bank is modeled by a lowpass filter cascaded model. In order to model the effect of a notch in the frequency response approximately one octave below the center frequency a second filter is followed after each notch/resonant filter in the cascaded model. We also employed the genetic algorithms to optimize the filter parameters. …

A High-Accuracy Offline Handwritten Numeral Recognition System., Xinyu. Ye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Handwritten numeral recognition has been confronted with the problems of recognizing infinite varieties of patterns produced from writers with different writing habits, styles, and artistic flavors. As one of the most important topics in pattern recognition, there has been, and still is a significant performance gap between human beings and machines since the late 1960s. The primary objective of this research is to develop a high accuracy offline handwritten numeral recognition system. This thesis focuses on the architecture and performance improvement of handwritten numeral recognition systems through proper preprocessing, feature extraction, classifier design and combining different classifiers. Hybrid architectures of …

Inner Product Computational Architectures Using The Double Base Number System., Stanley Jonathan. Eskritt Jan 2001

Inner Product Computational Architectures Using The Double Base Number System., Stanley Jonathan. Eskritt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Digital signal processing (DSP) permeates many of the products we see around us today. DSP systems manipulate signals as sequences of numbers, and require massive arithmetic computations to perform algorithmic processing such as filtering. Traditionally these systems are designed using the binary number system to perform the computations. This thesis presents an exploration into the construction of finite impulse response (FIR) filters using a recently introduced number system. The number system uses two orthogonal bases and has been referred to in literature as the Double-Base Number System (DBNS). We use an index calculus implementation of the DBNS to take advantage …

Adaptive Filters For Acoustic Echo Cancellation And Noise Reduction In A Car., Wayne Hui Chung. Chiang Jan 2001

Adaptive Filters For Acoustic Echo Cancellation And Noise Reduction In A Car., Wayne Hui Chung. Chiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, hands-free telephony systems have experienced growing and great interest for convenience and safety reasons. A non-interference speech signal is an ideal for the hand-free telephony communication system. Because prior to reception, the signal is likely to be unknown, a conventional and simple fixed filter is not useful in this application. Therefore, for reducing acoustic echoes and noise, the cancellers are designed with adaptive transversal FIR digital filters, and based on variants of the least mean square (LMS), recursive least square (RLS) and normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithms. The ability of updating tap-weights in adaptive filters is …

Experimental Investigaton Of Dielectric Strength Of Polymer Films., Syed Zaki Jafri Jan 2001

Experimental Investigaton Of Dielectric Strength Of Polymer Films., Syed Zaki Jafri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the dielectric strength of various polymers at different temperatures. The results achieved are interpreted in terms of probabilities of failures to allow validation of dielectric strength values where they can be safely used in a field application. We have used the Weibull distribution as the analysis technique in conjunction with a computer program developed to calculate the scale and shape parameters with confidence limits for this distribution. The experimental setup used provides a controlled test environment for the subject materials minimizing the variation in external factors and also reducing the duration of time required in duplicating and …

Algorithm Design For Smart Vision Sensors., Hongmei. Gao Jan 2001

Algorithm Design For Smart Vision Sensors., Hongmei. Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to provide algorithm design for smart vision sensors. Two algorithms are developed in this thesis. The first one is based on the correlation analysis method for images and can be implemented to find the 2-dimensional position of a target. In particular, the problem of finding the deviations along both X and Y directions is formulated as a matching process between the saved template, which represents the reference position, and the picture of a real static target captured by a 'vision' element such as a CCD camera, through correlation analysis of the 2-D spatial shift. …
