Cherokee Death Customs, Laura Hill Hughes Jun 1982

Cherokee Death Customs, Laura Hill Hughes

Masters Theses

Cherokee death customs remain a vital part of Cherokee culture even though acculturation processes have been taking place for almost 200 years. Cherokee beliefs about death and dying are so deeply rooted in the traditional culture that they have survived without major changes since the early contact period. The influence of the dominant Appalachian white society has altered the rationale behind the wake, multiple soul concept, and perceptions of the afterlife. However, the rituals and omens associated with these beliefs have not changed. In spite of the fact that scholars have been predicting the demise of Cherokee culture, the subleties …

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber Dec 1979

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber

Masters Theses

As in other folk art, White spiritual music has not been welI-documented. In this particular case, there does not even exist a clear definition of this somewhat unknown and often misunderstood phenomenon.

The intent of this thesis is to present and justify a comprehensive definition of White spiritual music. To arrive at this goal, a two-fold approach was taken. The first chapter of the thesis does not deal precisely with White spiritual music, but rather with related and complementary concepts which are more familiar to the average person. This writer feels that what one may know or think he knows …

A Nutrition Field Experience With The City Of Houston Health Department, Houston, Texas, Sue Ann Neal Aug 1975

A Nutrition Field Experience With The City Of Houston Health Department, Houston, Texas, Sue Ann Neal

Masters Theses

This thesis relates observations and experiences during a seven-week nutrition field experience with the city of Houston Health Department during the spring of 1973. The field experience provided an opportunity for supplementing previous work experience and for evaluating developing capacities in the application of nutrition theory to the unique health needs of a community.

During this field experience the author primarily studied the diversified nutrition services available in the community and investigated the feasibility of developing a community nutrition organization to coordinate nutrition services within Houston and Harris County. Because the development of such an organization did not have the …

Charles Mcclung Mcghee, Southern Financier, William Joseph Macarthur Jr. Mar 1975

Charles Mcclung Mcghee, Southern Financier, William Joseph Macarthur Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a study of Charles McClung McGhee (1828-1907), a Southern capitalist who achieved prominence as a railroad financier after the Civil War. Based primarily upon McGhee's personal papers in the McClung Historical Collection of Lawson McGhee Library, Knoxville, Tennessee, the dissertation describes McGhee's transformation from planter to businessman and his rise to power in the affairs of the East Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia Railroad. Having become a provincial magnate by 1886, McGhee moved to New York City where he interested himself in the Richmond and West Point Terminal Company, a system of railroads which later became the Southern Railroad …

The Four Late Comedies Of Sean O'Casey, Roy W. Mehaffey Aug 1969

The Four Late Comedies Of Sean O'Casey, Roy W. Mehaffey

Masters Theses

“The Four Late Comedies of Sean O’Casey” investigates the varying types of comedy treatment in four of O’Casey’s late plays. These comedies, Purple Dust, Cock-a-doodle Dandy, The Bishop’s Bonfire, and The Drums of Father Ned, are examples of O’Casey’s later writing, which ranges from farce to symbolic fantasy.

Data for this study was gathered through the study of the above-mentioned plays, and the research of secondary sources, such as biographies on and critical texts about O’Casey and his works. The University of Tennessee Graduate Library was used as the resource center for this study.

The four comedies reveal many different …

Walter Savage Landor's Views On English Life And Literature: A Critical Study Of His English Imaginary Conversations, John William Warren Jun 1961

Walter Savage Landor's Views On English Life And Literature: A Critical Study Of His English Imaginary Conversations, John William Warren

Doctoral Dissertations

To students of literature, Landor's dialogues of exposition will be worthwhile for their literary criticism and views on political and social history. On the other hand, the essentially dramatic Conversations have a more universal appeal as literary art, because in them principles and ideas give way to artistic presentation of character. In these dramatic scenes of historical and literary figures ot the English past, Landor skillfully creates drama or reve lation of character in the attitudes and personal reflections of his speakers without burdening the dialogues with his own historical documentation and exposition of ideas.

An Appraisal Of The Cannon County Board Of Education, J. Paul Turner Jul 1950

An Appraisal Of The Cannon County Board Of Education, J. Paul Turner

Masters Theses

The Cannon County board of education had been operating as a fifteen-man board for twenty years when this study was begun. A Special act¹ of the Extra-ordinary Session of the General Assembly in 1929 made certain exceptions to the General Education Bill of 1925 in its application to counties the size of Cannon County. Among these exceptions were: an increase in the size of the board, from seven to fifteen members; a change in the method of selecting board members, from the county court to the qualified voters of the civil districts; and a shortened term of office, from seven …

Some Social And Economic Phases Of Reconstruction In East Tennessee, 1864-1869, James Bernard Campbell

Masters Theses

Preface: The Reconstruction period in Tennessee was dominated by the Unionists of the eastern part of the state. It is the purpose of this study to show the results of this domination as reflected in social and economic conditions, education, and the status of the Negro in the home region of the East Tennessee leaders.

The writer is greatly indebted to Professor Stanley J. Folmsbee for many helpful suggestions and criticisms in the preparation of this study and for the use of a chapter in his unpublished history of the University of Tennessee. The librarians of the McClung Collection, Lawson …

A Southern Journal Of 1838: Its Historical, Social And Literary Backgrounds, Emmie Delle Mullen Jun 1946

A Southern Journal Of 1838: Its Historical, Social And Literary Backgrounds, Emmie Delle Mullen

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The discovery and study of a journal of considerable age is not unique. Journals, both published and unpublished, written alike by the famed and the obscure, are legion. A recently compiled bibliography of American diaries before 1861, which includes only the published diaries, is a substantial volume. It is, therefore, with some trepidation that I undertake for my thesis the study and editing of the journal of an almost completely unknown Southern woman who wrote it more than a century ago.

Thackeray's Reading, Mary H. Jenks Aug 1945

Thackeray's Reading, Mary H. Jenks

Masters Theses

Introduction: Before one can hope to gain an understanding of any author's work, and certainly before one can make any valid criticisms or interpretations of his writings, one should learn as much as possible about his life and his literary backgrounds. In studying the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, one observes that the tremendous amount and variety of his reading had a proportionate influence on the quality and range of his work. To date no serious study has been made of Thackeray's reading, although there have been numerous publications on his style, critical ability, humor, satire, travels, and personal life.

History Of Disciples Of Christ In Upper East Tennessee, H. C. Wagner

Masters Theses

Forward:

Any student of Tennessee history is aware of the fact that from the beginning the churches have played an important part in the development of the life of the state. The Disciples of Christ have been especially active in East Tennessee in the last 125 years, yet nothing has been written of their work. The purpose of this study has been to make a beginning on the research necessary for a full history of the Disciples of Christ in Tennessee. As such, it is largely a study in local church history, with a view to preserving the data and …
