Spin-Lattice Relaxation Measurements Of Poly(Ethylene Oxide) In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Kathryn Elaine Dowlen Dec 1994

Spin-Lattice Relaxation Measurements Of Poly(Ethylene Oxide) In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Kathryn Elaine Dowlen

Masters Theses

The effect of salt on the internal motions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in aqueous solution was investigated using 13C spin-lattice (T&sub1;) relaxation nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. Comparative studies with short chain PEO and diethylene glycol monoethyl ether aided in the interpretation of the polymer data. Isotropic and internal libration models were used to interpret the interactions of ions with the molecular motion. It was concluded that the internal motions of PEO are affected by salt in solution, but a larger effect is found in the small molecule analogue cases.

Analyzing The Effect Of Site Quality On Tennessee Reservoir Fishing Site Selection Using A Random Utility Model, Michael Wayne Bates Dec 1994

Analyzing The Effect Of Site Quality On Tennessee Reservoir Fishing Site Selection Using A Random Utility Model, Michael Wayne Bates

Masters Theses

Random Utility Models (RUM) are an extensively used modeling structure in the field of recreational demand studies. They are particularly useful when recreationists may choose from a large number of alternative recreational sites. Anglers in Tennessee have a large number of reservoirs available for fishing, each of which varies in site quality and access costs. Using survey data, models of angler site selection are empirically estimated for the major reservoirs in Tennessee, and benefit measures for changes in site fishing quality are calculated. Because RUM models are sensitive to the set of included sites, two different regional modelling strategies were …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Alkyne Adducts Of Cp*Co(Cpco)ℓ(Co)ℓ., Jane Doll

Masters Theses

This thesis describes the continuation of research performed in the laboratories of Dr. Barnes. Previous work has concentrated on the synthesis and characterization of cluster complexes with the general formula Cp*Mm(CpCo)3-m(CO)2 where M = Co, Rh, Ir, m = 0 - 2, Cp = cyclopentadiene and Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene. Of this series of complexes, the reactions of one in particular, (Cp)3Co3(Co)2, (Co3), have been studied in great detail. This complex contains no pentamethylcyclopentadiene ligands and all three metals are the same. Therefore, this complex may be considered …

Make No Little Plans : An Ethnographic Study On Educational Theories In A Local History Project, Carol Jo Evans Dec 1994

Make No Little Plans : An Ethnographic Study On Educational Theories In A Local History Project, Carol Jo Evans

Masters Theses

This study took place in a rural community in eastern Tennessee, Cedar Ridge, whose primary source of income and heritage, has traditionally been from the various textile mills in the community. Female members from a grassroots organization, Cedar Ridge Action For Today (CRAFT), originally wanted to create a museum in the community to document the general history of the community. Upon the suggestion of the director of a regional heritage tourism project in a neighboring town, CRAFT members decided to capitalize on the fact that the community's heritage was built upon the work of women in the textile industry and …

Parallel Implementations Of Certain Algorithms For The Linear Inhomogeneous Heat And Wave Equations, Kenneth William Fister Dec 1994

Parallel Implementations Of Certain Algorithms For The Linear Inhomogeneous Heat And Wave Equations, Kenneth William Fister

Masters Theses

In this thesis we look at certain algorithms for the inhomogeneous heat and wave equa- tions, with the focus being the implementation of these algorithms in PVM (Parallel Virtual Ma- chine). PVM creates, via connection of workstations, a parallel environment. These algorithms are created in a special way to ensure that a phenomenon known as order reduction will not oc- cur; our numerical experiments confirm this. The parallelism in these algorithms is obtained by the use of partial fraction expansion of appropriate rational functions. Numerical evidence is fur- nished to show that the algorithms perform essentially the same in both …

Congressional Voting On The Below-Cost Timber Sale Issue : Ideologically Or Economically Driven?, Lisa Marie Ferro Dec 1994

Congressional Voting On The Below-Cost Timber Sale Issue : Ideologically Or Economically Driven?, Lisa Marie Ferro

Masters Theses

This study examines Congressional responses to the revelations in the mid-1980s that a considerable number of national forest timber sales are "below-cost", i.e. the cost of preparing the timber for sale is greater than the revenue realized by the government. The issue presents an unusual opportunity to study the conflicts between ideology and local economic self-interest in Congress because the two majorCongressional ideologies responsibility environmentalism and fiscal are in an unusual alignment on this issue:below-cost timber sales are widely considered both environmentally harmful and fiscally irresponsible. A profile of each legislator was compiled. It included: pattern of voting on environmental issues, …

Neural Grammatical Inference Using Network-Adapted Encoding, Michael Peter Ferrell Dec 1994

Neural Grammatical Inference Using Network-Adapted Encoding, Michael Peter Ferrell

Masters Theses

Other researchers have recently trained recurrent artificial neural networks with gradient descent techniques to infer simple abstract machines. This thesis examines the effects of a dimensionality reduction technique on the performance of such a network trained to recognize the odd-parity language. The network used is a second-order recurrent network similar to that of Giles et al. (1990) with the same complete-gradient training method. The differences are: 1) a hidden layer (the encoding layer) inserted between the input layer and the original second layer (the state layer) and 2) a separate output layer--a single processing element (PE) with first-order connections from …

John Dewey's Public And The Theory Of Public Ideas, Stephen Lee Garrett Dec 1994

John Dewey's Public And The Theory Of Public Ideas, Stephen Lee Garrett

Masters Theses

Several theories exist which posit that communities of people hold in common a set of core beliefs, values or ideas. When these ideas influence public policy, affect the law and form the criteria of worth and wealth, they are termed public ideas.

This thesis examines the several theories which infer, in some fashion, the existence of public ideas. In doing so, I have sought to answer the following questions: (1) How is the term public ideas differentiated from others? (2) What evidence exists to suggest that a public acts harmoniously regarding its ideas? In other words, has anyone presented …

The Use Of Ordinal Categorical Variables In Skeletal Assessment Of Sex, Samantha Marie Hens Dec 1994

The Use Of Ordinal Categorical Variables In Skeletal Assessment Of Sex, Samantha Marie Hens

Masters Theses

Ordinal categorical variables are frequently used as a basis for assessing the sex of adult archaeological skeletal remains. In this thesis, seven commonly used pelvic and cranial characteristics are scored on a five point ordinal scale by two independent observers from a sample of 148 individuals taken from the Averbuch skeletal collection (40DV60). The scores are compared using ordinal log-linear models appropriate for measuring interobserver agreement. The results show that most of the trait observations are highly correlated between the two observers, but that a few traits do not exhibit marginal homogeneity (ie. the observers disagree in the proportions of …

Processing And Characterization Of Poly(Ester-Amide)S And Poly(Ester-Amide) Copolymer Monofilaments, Martha Anne Jones

Masters Theses

The introduction of synthetic polymers in the 1940's has revolutionized the field of biomaterials. Currently, applications for polymeric biomaterials include surgical implants, prosthetic devices, artificial ligaments, synthetic blood vessels, and controlled drug release systems. A great deal of work has been focused on developing surgical suture implants, which will provide adequate strength while the tissues heal and will be absorbed in the body over a reasonable amount of time. Several synthetic absorbable sutures are currently on the market, but improvements over the properties observed for these materials is desired. 3M company has recently developed a The new class of bioabsorbable …

Integrated Test And Evaluation Of Aircraft Exterior Lighting, Glen Scott Kinney Dec 1994

Integrated Test And Evaluation Of Aircraft Exterior Lighting, Glen Scott Kinney

Masters Theses

The integration, test, and evaluation of U.S. Navy military aircraft exterior lighting over the past ten years have created several unanswered questions. Attribute this to the development and integration of new lighting technology, Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS), and changes in operational performance requirements of military aircraft. Federal Aviation Regulations and Military Specifications specify current exterior lighting system performance requirements. The latest significant update to the performance requirements was in the mid-60's. This update was due to the development of supersonic aircraft and the relative increases in closure speeds (1). The purpose of this thesis is to provide technical information …

Accident Dosimetry Using Panasonic Dosimeters, Eugenia Beth Lee Dec 1994

Accident Dosimetry Using Panasonic Dosimeters, Eugenia Beth Lee

Masters Theses

Criticality accident personnel dosimetry involves the evaluation of high doses in mixed fields of gamma rays and neutrons. Those who work in areas where there is potential for a criticality accident or other extremely high neutron doses need dosimeters, such as thermoluminescent dosimeters, capable of measuring doses associated with these scenarios. In order for a dosimeter to be used in these areas, it must be characterized for accident or high level neutron dosimetry. Panasonic thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs), using lithium tetraborate, have been characterized for accident and high level neutron dosimetry.

The characterization of these dosimeters includes calculating the dosimeter's response …

A Study Of Continuous Explicit And Diagonally Implicit Runge-Kutta Methods, Pamela Stanfield Lancaster Dec 1994

A Study Of Continuous Explicit And Diagonally Implicit Runge-Kutta Methods, Pamela Stanfield Lancaster

Masters Theses

Runge-Kutta methods provide a popular way to solve ordinary differential equations. However, traditional schemes only provide solutions at a discrete set of points. In this thesis, continuous Runge-Kutta methods for first order ordinary differential equations are considered. The developments of some continuous explicit Runge-Kutta formulas by various researchers are presented in the first chapter. They impose different conditions on their schemes, but all make use of what are called order conditions. In the second chapter, two-stage and three-stage continuous diagonally implicit methods are developed. With the two-stage continuous method, second order may be attained with third order at the mesh …

The Effect Of Viscous Attenuation On Shock Tube Performance, Nick Roger Mckenzie Dec 1994

The Effect Of Viscous Attenuation On Shock Tube Performance, Nick Roger Mckenzie

Masters Theses

Shock wave attenuation affects experimental results by reducing the shock velocity as it travels down the shock tube. Until recently, attenuation has not been readily predictable with accuracy and was simply accepted during the experimental process. A mass loss theory was developed by Dr. Harold Mirels which accounted for the shock wave attenuation by considering the formed boundary layer due to the passage of a shock wave. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a computer code, which would apply Mirels' theory to a prediction model, and validate the results with acoustic theory and Mirels' data. It will then …

Application Of Partial Least Squares And Principal Component Analysis To Control And Monitoring Of A Reactive Distillation Column, Harold David Miller Dec 1994

Application Of Partial Least Squares And Principal Component Analysis To Control And Monitoring Of A Reactive Distillation Column, Harold David Miller

Masters Theses

Today's typical chemical process has attached to it a vast, complex "nervous system" of sorts an array of sensors, valves, wires, and control computers which frequently monitor and store information regarding hundreds or thousands of measurements. In addition to these continuous measurements, key process and product streams are periodically analyzed to measure quality parameters such as composition or viscosity. The sheer volume of data available often results in "data overload" for those trying to improve or troubleshoot a process, since a human without data analysis tools is unable to interpret large sets of raw data and make analytical judgements regarding …

The Evaluation Of Electret Ionization Chambers As A Field Screening Method For Samples Containing Natural And Depleted Uranium, Michael Edward Murray Dec 1994

The Evaluation Of Electret Ionization Chambers As A Field Screening Method For Samples Containing Natural And Depleted Uranium, Michael Edward Murray

Masters Theses

Electret ionization chambers have been experimentally evaluated as a field screening method for samples containing natural and depleted uranium. Correlation factors relating the electret's response to uranium standards were experimentally determined and tested. The method was tested on unknown samples in an environment similar to what is expected in radiological characterization studies. Results of the tests indicated this method gives satisfactory results provided sample preparation and ambient environmental conditions are satisfied. The loss of radon from the samples during sample collection and processing was investigated with regard to the decay and regrowth of radioactivity during the period of sample analysis …

Information Management Tools For Updating An Svd-Encoded Indexing Scheme, Gavin William O'Brien Dec 1994

Information Management Tools For Updating An Svd-Encoded Indexing Scheme, Gavin William O'Brien

Masters Theses

Lexical-matching methods for information retrieval can be inaccurate when they are used to match a user's queries. Typically, information is retrieved by literally matching terms in documents with those of the query. The problem is that users want to retrieve on the basis of conceptual topic or meaning of a document. There are usually many ways to express a given concept (synonymy), so the literal terms in a user's query may not match those of a relevant document. In addition, most words have multiple meanings (polysemy), so terms in a user's query will literally match terms in irrelevant documents. The …

Image Classification Using Color Texture Energy Measure, Michael J. Paulick Dec 1994

Image Classification Using Color Texture Energy Measure, Michael J. Paulick

Masters Theses

Image classification can be performed on the basis of textural differences. Many textural techniques have been developed to operate on monochrome images. Color images may contain texture patterns that are dependent on color variations for textural discrimination. When a monochrome textural technique is applied to the gray-tone levels of these color images, the texture patterns may not be distinguishable. Therefore, a color texture energy measure technique was developed based on a monochrome technique developed by Kenneth. I. Laws in 1980. Color texture energy is measured by convolving each RGB plane of a color image separately with a set of zero-sum …

An Experimental Study Of Chaotic Behavior Of Bubbles In Liquid Columns, Pitchaiah Chakka Dec 1994

An Experimental Study Of Chaotic Behavior Of Bubbles In Liquid Columns, Pitchaiah Chakka

Masters Theses

The dynamics of a single column of rising air bubbles was experimentally investigated. Bubble behavior was studied for three different liquids, glycerine, karo syrup, and water, with most attention focused on glycerine. Growth and detachment of bubbles from a nozzle at the column bottom produced pressure fluctuations in the air supply line that were detected with a pressure transducer. Upward motion of bubbles in the column was also measured by deflection of laser beams passing through the liquid.

Analyses of the pressure and laser intensity signals demonstrate that the bubbles exhibit increasingly complex dynamics as the rate of gas flow …

An Experimental Study Of Natural Convection In Horizontal Rod-Bundle Enclosures, Tony E. Dalton Dec 1994

An Experimental Study Of Natural Convection In Horizontal Rod-Bundle Enclosures, Tony E. Dalton

Masters Theses

An experimental study was conducted to investigate natural convection heat transfer in horizontally oriented rod-bundles. Experiments were performed on 3 x 3, 5 x 5, and 7 x 7 arrays of square pitched electrically heated rods. The bundles were contained in an isothermal square enclosure, and each rod was supplied with a uniform power dissipation per unit length. Steady state temperature results illustrate that the individual rods of a particular array have distinct characteristics, and furthermore patterns are observed as the array sizes increase. Temperature, power, and pressure data were reduced to develop engineering correlations in the form of Nusselt …

Development And Evaluation Of An Improved Positioning Scheme For A Cyclotron Ion Source, Richard Semmes Paulus

Masters Theses

Cyclotrons are particle accelerators that are used to create radioactive drugs for nuclear medicine. Cyclotron efficiency is affected by the initial positioning of a plasma ion source within a cyclotron. CTI manufactures cyclotrons that use a kinematically inexact positioning scheme which relies on thread clearances to pivot an ion source.

This project analyzes CTI's current scheme, proposes design goals for an improved method, describes analysis and development of the improved mechanism, and presents experimental results and conclusions. The following design goals were defined:Range of Motion:x & y axes: ± 3 mm; zaxis: ± 2 mm.Accuracy of Motion:x, y, & z …

The Thermal Conductivity Of Polycrystalline Ybaℓcuℓoℓ Superconductor From 10 K To 300 K, Jeffery Michael Schmitz Dec 1994

The Thermal Conductivity Of Polycrystalline Ybaℓcuℓoℓ Superconductor From 10 K To 300 K, Jeffery Michael Schmitz

Masters Theses

The steady-state longitudinal heat flow method was used to determine the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline, bulk YBa2Cu4O8 over the temperature range of 10 to 300 K. YBa2Cu4O8is an oxide material that exhibits superconducting properties (loss of electrical resistance and partial or complete expulsion of magnetic fields) at temperatures lower than 80 K. The measurement of thermal conductivity, γ, for this material proved to be difficult because of the physical limitations of sample size and the low thermal conductivity of the material. The electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of YBa …

Kairos Revisited : The Rhetorical Situation And The Art Of Becoming A Rhetor, Debra Hawhee Wilhoit Dec 1994

Kairos Revisited : The Rhetorical Situation And The Art Of Becoming A Rhetor, Debra Hawhee Wilhoit

Masters Theses

In his article "Concepts of Art and the Teaching of Writing," Richard Young points to four different conceptions of the art of rhetoric: "glamour," "knack," "grammar" and "craft." If placed on a continuum, one pole would be art as "glamour”, a genius theory of art that stresses the creative dimension of art, but frequently mystifies the creative process. The other pole would be art as "craft" or rules and norms of style and usage (131). Those who believe that art is a "gift," that the composing process is irrational and cannot be taught, leave composition teachers to perform the putative …
