The Kinetics Of Volatile Lead Compound Formation During Simulated Hazardous Waste Incineration, Joel Thomas Shor Dec 1994

The Kinetics Of Volatile Lead Compound Formation During Simulated Hazardous Waste Incineration, Joel Thomas Shor

Doctoral Dissertations

Air pollution from fine metal-containing particles (and vapors) formed during hazardous waste incineration has attracted less attention than other incinerator emissions. Recently, however, metal pollution has become subject to more stringent regulations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced limitations on the emissions of ten toxic metals. Pollution control systems that will effectively remove fine (submicron) metal-containing particles from flue gases are difficult to construct. Incinerators have not been designed or operated to minimize the formation of such particles. Industrial-scale incineration testing has produced anomalous results for air emissions of lead and other metals.

To gain a better fundamental understanding …

In Pursuit Of Persistence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Community College Stopouts' Attempts To Obtain A College Degree, Doris Jean Ivie Dec 1994

In Pursuit Of Persistence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Community College Stopouts' Attempts To Obtain A College Degree, Doris Jean Ivie

Doctoral Dissertations

Twelve community college stopouts (current students who had stopped attending college for at least one semester in the past and who had since re-enrolled) who fit the "success" criterion of having achieved sophomore status and of maintaining at least a 3.00 grade-point average were interviewed using nonstructured reflective interview techniques. The participants were encouraged to reflect on their disparate experiences of college, on themselves within each of those experiences, and on sources of social support that had contributed to their decisions to leave, to return to, and to remain in college. The participants discussed their various college experiences in terms …

The Effects Of Low Frequency Electrical Stimulation On Muscular Strength And Endurance In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis, Lisa L. Oglesby Dec 1994

The Effects Of Low Frequency Electrical Stimulation On Muscular Strength And Endurance In Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis, Lisa L. Oglesby

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of a practical application of a low frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) program of 8 pps to individuals with multiple sclerosis. Previous research has shown that such a program induces a conversion of fast twitch muscle properties to those of slow twitch. Electrical stimulation was applied for 3 hours per day, 6 days a week, for 6 weeks, to the quadriceps femoris muscle of nine subjects with multiple sclerosis. Pre and post measurements of average peak torque, mean force, and fatigue slope were taken as indices of the muscle's strength and …

A Critique Of Tractarian Semantics, Gary Watts Levvis Dec 1994

A Critique Of Tractarian Semantics, Gary Watts Levvis

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a critique of the principal claims made within Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. It traces the development of his thought from the time he dictated the pre-Tractarian "Notes on Logic" to Russell up until about 1932 when he began work on the Philosophical Grammar. The influence exercised upon him by Frege, Russell and Moore are considered at length. Chapter one examines Moore's relational theory of judgment which Wittgenstein apparently accepted upon his arrival at Cambridge in 1911. From Moore Wittgenstein would inherit one of the fundamental metaphysical theses of the Tractatus, namely, that the world consists of facts rather …

Understanding Idealization: Beyond Cognitive Appraisals, Nancy R. Hague Dec 1994

Understanding Idealization: Beyond Cognitive Appraisals, Nancy R. Hague

Doctoral Dissertations

Meanings of idealization were explored from psychoanalytic and social psychological perspectives. Idealization relating to normal development, as described by Kohut and Kernberg, ranges from an unrealistic belief that the other is all-good and omnipotent to a more realistic appreciation of a separate other. Idealization which represents a pathological process was also discussed by Kernberg. Social psychologists (e.g., Hall & Taylor) operationalized idealization in terms of cognitive appraisals and studied it in the context of love.

To construct a new measure, items were generated to represent various types and meanings of idealization. In phase I of research, 230 items were administered …

The Effect Of Off-Farm Economic Activities On Rural-Urban Migration In Brazil, Ricardo C. Lima Dec 1994

The Effect Of Off-Farm Economic Activities On Rural-Urban Migration In Brazil, Ricardo C. Lima

Doctoral Dissertations

Rural-urban migration models commonly assume that rural income and employment are mainly derived from the farm economy. Many studies of rural labor markets in developing countries, however, have indicated that a significant portion of rural employment occurs in nonfarm activities. The present study incorporates the rural nonfarm economy in the traditional rural-urban migration framework, as a determinant of rural labor relocation. Brazil was used as a case study due to the economic and demographic changes experienced by this country during the period between 1960 and 1980. The migration model was estimated in a system of regression equations, which used cross-state …

Income Potential And Stability Of Diversified Tennessee Farms With Emphasis On Environmental Horticulture Plants, Sarfraz Ahmad Dec 1994

Income Potential And Stability Of Diversified Tennessee Farms With Emphasis On Environmental Horticulture Plants, Sarfraz Ahmad

Doctoral Dissertations

Generally, there is a considerable variability in year-to-year farm income for the typical farmer. Variation in farm income poses a risk in agricultural decision making. Diversification among enterprises in farm production has been practiced by producers as one measure against risk. Diversification in farm production involves adoption of a number of production activities instead of a single activity by the producer. Production diversification can potentially be successfully employed to manage price, yield and income risk if different crops, livestock, and or other alternative enterprises react differently to events. The inherent logic has applications in any situation where choice must be …

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 1,000 fish collections from 1867 to 1994 resulted in the reporting of 134 species of fishes from the Holston River system. One-hundred thirty of those species are considered within as valid records. About 14% of those species were introduced into the system, leaving 112 indigenous species reported from the Holston River system. V Distribution of species throughout space and time is presented in tabular form in the appendices, based on the availability of collection records. Catalogued specimens are listed for 117 species. Perturbations of species assemblages due to mercury pollution and impoundment of the Holston River system arc considered. …

The Effect Of Feeding Protected Dietary Lipid Supplements On The Fatty Acids Composition Of The Blood Serum And The Milk Fats Of Lactating Ewes, Yobouet Dje Dec 1994

The Effect Of Feeding Protected Dietary Lipid Supplements On The Fatty Acids Composition Of The Blood Serum And The Milk Fats Of Lactating Ewes, Yobouet Dje

Doctoral Dissertations

This work was undertaken to assess the potential of acetaldehyde and diacetyl as alternative protective agents to formaldehyde, a carcinogen, for the commercial production of products from ruminant animals (cattle, sheep, goat) with increased unsaturated fatty acid (18:1, 18:2 and 18:3) contents. In experiment 1, different gels were prepared with emulsions of (1) defatted soy flour-casein-sunflower oil, (2) ground full-fat soybean seeds-casein and (3) ground full-fat sunflower seeds-casein. Each gel protein—oil emulsion was treated with 5% (w/w emulsion) formaldehyde (FA) (37% solution), acetaldehyde (AC), diacetyl (DA) to form a gel or not treated (CO).

The microstructures of type 1 gels …

Intensities of bitter, painty and rancid increased between 8 and 15 d in UP and HTST …

Struvite Control In Recycling Flush Systems Using Chemical Inhibitors, Sheldon D. Barker Dec 1994

Struvite Control In Recycling Flush Systems Using Chemical Inhibitors, Sheldon D. Barker

Masters Theses

Struvite is a mineral scale that forms in and on components of recycle flush systems, causing equipment failure. To date acid flushing is the most often recommended means of removing and controlling the buildup. As a part of an on going project, this thesis tested a potential inhibitor, Kelig 4000, under field conditions. The use of an inhibitor to prevent, or slow, the formation of struvite is an attractive alternative to acid flushing for several reasons. Inhibitors reduce the time the recycle flush system is off-line for cleaning, and require less time of the producer. The use of inhibitors to …

Analyzing The Effect Of Site Quality On Tennessee Reservoir Fishing Site Selection Using A Random Utility Model, Michael Wayne Bates Dec 1994

Analyzing The Effect Of Site Quality On Tennessee Reservoir Fishing Site Selection Using A Random Utility Model, Michael Wayne Bates

Masters Theses

Random Utility Models (RUM) are an extensively used modeling structure in the field of recreational demand studies. They are particularly useful when recreationists may choose from a large number of alternative recreational sites. Anglers in Tennessee have a large number of reservoirs available for fishing, each of which varies in site quality and access costs. Using survey data, models of angler site selection are empirically estimated for the major reservoirs in Tennessee, and benefit measures for changes in site fishing quality are calculated. Because RUM models are sensitive to the set of included sites, two different regional modelling strategies were …

Insect Diversity And Abundance Within The Canopy Of A Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L.) Orchard In Eastern Tennessee, Robert Christopher Stanton Dec 1994

Insect Diversity And Abundance Within The Canopy Of A Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra L.) Orchard In Eastern Tennessee, Robert Christopher Stanton

Masters Theses

The Watauga northern red oak (NRO) (Quercus rubra L.) seed orchard was established in 1987 by the USDA Forest Service in Johnson County, TN. Originally a genetic test of 220 open-pollinated families, these trees now serve as a seed source for oak reforestation efforts.

Acorn production in the seed orchard has been partially limited due to premature abscission of flowers and immature acorns. The cause of this production loss is unknown, although canopy-dwelling insects have been implicated.

To better understand the insect communities existing in the canopy of the seed orchard, a two-year insect diversity study was conducted in …

Analysis Of Fiscal And Monetary Impacts Of The U.S. Wheat Exports To Japan, Stephanie Elaine Turner Dec 1994

Analysis Of Fiscal And Monetary Impacts Of The U.S. Wheat Exports To Japan, Stephanie Elaine Turner

Masters Theses

Wheat is one of the most essential agricultural commodities in the world, and one of the top three commodities produced by the U.S. The U.S. exports the majority of its wheat. Japan has been a major market for U.S. wheat, mainly purchasing hard red winter, hard red spring, and soft white wheats.

The objective of this study is to measure the impacts of macroeconomic variables on U.S. wheat exports to Japan. Two major hypotheses were proposed: (1) the exchange rate plays a significant role in affecting the level of U.S. wheat exports to Japan and (2) other macroeconomic variables impact …

Molecular Phylogeny And Dna Amplification Fingerprinting Of Petunia Species, Teresa Ann Cerny Dec 1994

Molecular Phylogeny And Dna Amplification Fingerprinting Of Petunia Species, Teresa Ann Cerny

Masters Theses

The relationships of four wild species of Petunia (Petunia spp. Juss.) and ten cultivars of the cultivated petunia (P. xhybrida Hort.) were investigated using DNA Amplification Fingerprinting (DAF). Amplification and separation of DNA products of petunia produced reproducible banding profiles. Consistencies were found among profiles of the variable Petunia taxa by bulking the tissue from ten different plants. Each of the ten octamer primers selected for use throughout the study revealed polymorphic loci between the species and cultivars. Among the total 201 bands produced, 146 (73%) loci were polymorphic and these could be used to distinguish between each …
