The Artist’S Loving Hand: The Travel Letters Of Emily Eden, Isabella Bird, And Mothercatherine Mcauley Written To Their Sisters In 19th Century Britain And Ireland, Holly Elizabeth Ratcliff

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to observe the qualities of and techniques enlisted by British and Irish women travel writers corresponding with their sisters who remained at home. Some of the most vivid and telling works regarding the travels of extraordinary women are contained in the letters that they wrote to their families. These letters often involved brief factual commentaries; detailed descriptions of friends, other family members, or strangers encountered on a journey; advice and encouragement for life continuing on as normal back at home; and pictures or paintings that could serve as postcards to capture visions of people …

Gender, Coal Mining, And Appalachia, Adrianna Kalena Porter May 2002

Gender, Coal Mining, And Appalachia, Adrianna Kalena Porter

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of women in Appalachian coal communities by utilizing both primary and secondary sources. The people of Appalachia have subscribed to patriarchal gender roles since the time of the earliest settlements within the region. Men dealt with the outside world while women's responsibilities centered around the home. Beginning around 1890, industrialization within the area intensified patriarchy as men became wage earners and women remained in the home with little access to formal wage employment. If wages were earned, they usually contributed to familial survival and not female independence. The feminist movement …

Civil Rights, Black Power, And Racial Tension In Cairo, Illinois : A Northern Powder Keg In Southern Clothing, Christopher W. Perry Aug 2001

Civil Rights, Black Power, And Racial Tension In Cairo, Illinois : A Northern Powder Keg In Southern Clothing, Christopher W. Perry

Masters Theses

This thesis focuses on the period of civil rights activism in Cairo, Illinois between 1967 and 1971, particularly the interaction between the local African-American organization the United Front and two white activist groups, the White Hats and the United Citizens for Community Action. Cairo is unusual because it is a Northern town that systematically discriminated against African Americans long after many Southern towns abandoned segregation. Because Cairo's white power structure successfully denied black equality into the 1980s, I conclude that civil rights and black power both failed in Cairo. To fully understand the conditions that led to the struggles of …

Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo Journalistic Coverage Of Richard Nixon, James Chandler Patrick

Masters Theses

This thesis explores Hunter S. Thompson's writings about Richard M. Nixon from 1960 to 1994. Thompson expressed strong animosity toward Nixon, but most of the more outlandish articles he wrote about Nixon were fabrications. Thompson's writings were often ambiguous and contradictory. Sources used for research included books written by Thompson, books of letters Thompson sent to family and friends, books about Thompson and Richard Nixon, and books about the Watergate scandal. This thesis addresses the questions of why Thompson was so fascinated by Nixon, and why he wrote on Nixon for almost 40 years. It also addresses the question of …

Effacing The Blots From Their Otherwise Fair Escutcheon : Problems Of Public Health In Leicester 1849-1891, Scott Edward Roney Aug 1995

Effacing The Blots From Their Otherwise Fair Escutcheon : Problems Of Public Health In Leicester 1849-1891, Scott Edward Roney

Masters Theses

This study concerns two public health problems in Victorian Leicester: sewerage and 'summer diarrhoea.' The problems are considered to have been constructed socially as well as materially. While neither problem was unique to Leicester, there were circumstances which made the town's responses to the problems unique. The methodological lens for the study is a quasi-Kuhnian conceptualization called an 'accepted remedy.’ It is posited that the existence or absence of a consensually-held accepted remedy for a specific public health problem was a significant factor in determining how a community would respond to the problem and how successful such a response might …

The Journalism Of Patrick F. Mcmanus : His Niche In Outdoor Humor, Tim Miller Strickland

Masters Theses

The role of Patrick F. McManus in the genre of outdoor journalism is examined. Methods and procedures included a biographical study; a personal interview with the subject; an analysis of the critical reception to his work; and an analysis of his literary style. The findings include: that McManus' childhood lifestyle prepared him for his success as a writer; that while McManus is opinionated, he works diligently to avoid controversial topics, including those about which he has strong opinions; that McManus has enjoyed a largely positive reception from book critics; and that McManus now stands alone in his position in a …

Cherokee Death Customs, Laura Hill Hughes Jun 1982

Cherokee Death Customs, Laura Hill Hughes

Masters Theses

Cherokee death customs remain a vital part of Cherokee culture even though acculturation processes have been taking place for almost 200 years. Cherokee beliefs about death and dying are so deeply rooted in the traditional culture that they have survived without major changes since the early contact period. The influence of the dominant Appalachian white society has altered the rationale behind the wake, multiple soul concept, and perceptions of the afterlife. However, the rituals and omens associated with these beliefs have not changed. In spite of the fact that scholars have been predicting the demise of Cherokee culture, the subleties …

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber Dec 1979

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber

Masters Theses

As in other folk art, White spiritual music has not been welI-documented. In this particular case, there does not even exist a clear definition of this somewhat unknown and often misunderstood phenomenon.

The intent of this thesis is to present and justify a comprehensive definition of White spiritual music. To arrive at this goal, a two-fold approach was taken. The first chapter of the thesis does not deal precisely with White spiritual music, but rather with related and complementary concepts which are more familiar to the average person. This writer feels that what one may know or think he knows …

The Four Late Comedies Of Sean O'Casey, Roy W. Mehaffey

Masters Theses

“The Four Late Comedies of Sean O’Casey” investigates the varying types of comedy treatment in four of O’Casey’s late plays. These comedies, Purple Dust, Cock-a-doodle Dandy, The Bishop’s Bonfire, and The Drums of Father Ned, are examples of O’Casey’s later writing, which ranges from farce to symbolic fantasy.

Data for this study was gathered through the study of the above-mentioned plays, and the research of secondary sources, such as biographies on and critical texts about O’Casey and his works. The University of Tennessee Graduate Library was used as the resource center for this study.

The four comedies reveal many different …

An Appraisal Of The Cannon County Board Of Education, J. Paul Turner

Masters Theses

The Cannon County board of education had been operating as a fifteen-man board for twenty years when this study was begun. A Special act¹ of the Extra-ordinary Session of the General Assembly in 1929 made certain exceptions to the General Education Bill of 1925 in its application to counties the size of Cannon County. Among these exceptions were: an increase in the size of the board, from seven to fifteen members; a change in the method of selecting board members, from the county court to the qualified voters of the civil districts; and a shortened term of office, from seven …

It is the purpose of this study to show the results of this domination as reflected in social and economic conditions, education, and the status of the Negro in the home region of the East Tennessee leaders.

The writer is greatly indebted to Professor Stanley J. Folmsbee for many helpful suggestions and criticisms in the preparation of this study and for the use of a chapter in his unpublished history of the University of Tennessee. The librarians of the McClung Collection, Lawson …

A Southern Journal Of 1838: Its Historical, Social And Literary Backgrounds, Emmie Delle Mullen Jun 1946

A Southern Journal Of 1838: Its Historical, Social And Literary Backgrounds, Emmie Delle Mullen

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The discovery and study of a journal of considerable age is not unique. Journals, both published and unpublished, written alike by the famed and the obscure, are legion. A recently compiled bibliography of American diaries before 1861, which includes only the published diaries, is a substantial volume. It is, therefore, with some trepidation that I undertake for my thesis the study and editing of the journal of an almost completely unknown Southern woman who wrote it more than a century ago.

Thackeray's Reading, Mary H. Jenks Aug 1945

Thackeray's Reading, Mary H. Jenks

Masters Theses

Introduction: Before one can hope to gain an understanding of any author's work, and certainly before one can make any valid criticisms or interpretations of his writings, one should learn as much as possible about his life and his literary backgrounds. In studying the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, one observes that the tremendous amount and variety of his reading had a proportionate influence on the quality and range of his work. To date no serious study has been made of Thackeray's reading, although there have been numerous publications on his style, critical ability, humor, satire, travels, and personal life.
