The Use Of Esophageal-Fistulated Steers To Determine Flourine Intake Of Cattle Grazing Flourine-Contaminated Forage, Joseph John Mascola Mar 1972

The Use Of Esophageal-Fistulated Steers To Determine Flourine Intake Of Cattle Grazing Flourine-Contaminated Forage, Joseph John Mascola

Masters Theses

During the grazing seasons of three consecutive years, esophageal-fistulated steers were used to determine fluorine intake of cattle grazing fluorine-contaminated pastures. Forage samples obtained by the fistulated steers were adjusted for losses of fluorine due to saliva leaching. The adjusted fluorine content of this forage (selected forage) was compared with that of samples of available forage. The effects of season, soil fluorine level, plant height, steer and year on the fluorine content of selected forage were studied.

Significant differences between the available forage and the selected forage was observed. These differences indicated that esophageal-fistulated animals more accurately determined the total …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to identify some of the factors associated with the levels of living of elderly residents of Hamblen County, Tennessee. Levels of living were determined by the number of selected home improvements items possessed by each household.

Multiple regression analysis was the statistical tool used to assess levels of living. Possession of these home improvement items was analyzed according to 11 independent variables.

The variable "education of the female" accounted for approximately 18 percent of the variation in levels of living, and appeared to be the best overall predictor of variations in level of living …

Problem C: The Influences Of Assumptions And Values On Intercultural Interactions, Anthony C. Griffin Mar 1972

Problem C: The Influences Of Assumptions And Values On Intercultural Interactions, Anthony C. Griffin

Masters Theses

This study has attempted to draw together and more clearly define some of the cultural assumptions and values that may influence our behavior as human beings. More specifically, it has attempted to clarify how these assumptions and values may influence the behavior of individuals in cross-cultural situations.

Assumptions were defined as the predispositions people employ to explain and pattern the world in a rational manner. Assumptions are relatively vague and very difficult to define or measure. Values are the explicit reflections of cultural assumptions, and are relatively concrete, specific, and more easily explained or measured than assumptions.

Considerable emphasis was …

Starch Gelatinization As Affected By Lipid, Nina Sue Berry Mar 1972

Starch Gelatinization As Affected By Lipid, Nina Sue Berry

Masters Theses

Gelatinization of untreated and defatted corn starch as affected by added elaidinized and non-elaidinized olive oil was investigated. The experimental plan was a 2 x 3 factorial, which included no added lipid as well as elaidinized and non-elaidinized olive oil. The added lipids were used at the level of 6 mg per gram of starch in pastes containing 8 g of starch per 100 ml of liquid. Seven replications were completed. Suspensions were heated in the Brabender Amylograph from 25°C to 92.5°C (45 min) and held at 92.5°C for 15 min. Data taken from each amylogram included: the transition temperature, …

An Analysis Of The Responses Of Young Beef Cattle To Restraint In A Squeeze Chute, William Ray Stricklin Mar 1972

An Analysis Of The Responses Of Young Beef Cattle To Restraint In A Squeeze Chute, William Ray Stricklin

Masters Theses

Two hundred and eight Angus calves and 140 Hereford calves were subjectively scored on a discrete scale from one to five for resistance to restraint in a squeeze chute. Calves of the 1970 crop were scored at an average age of 375 days (postweaning). The 1971 calves were scored at average ages of 142 (preweaning) and 241 (weaning) days. Location and breed effects on score for restraint resistance (or chute behavior) were completely confounded since the Angus were at one branch experiment station and the Herefords at another. The Angus calves had the highest average score at all observation times …
