Gifted Children, Annie Belle Dehart Atwill

Master's Theses

Intellectually gifted children constitute one of a nation's greatest natural resources. High intelligence is the most important single attribute of the human race. All progress of civilization has probably been achieved through persons possessing special talents, together with a superior mind; all future progress will also depend on such persons with ability.

This study is delimited, first, by selecting the demarcating place at a point that will include all children falling in the hundredth percentile; the one per cent of the elementary school population thnt can enrn a 140 I. Q. or above on the Stanford-Binet Scale. These children will b …

Master's Theses

Virginia was most fortunate in having as her first Superintendent of Public Instruction, and later, as President of her first Teacher-Training institution, a man who under stood the .American ideals of democracy and whose faith in education and its ennobling effect on humanity never wavered.

It has been said that "he lit the torch of educa- tion in Virginia", and "gave local habitation and a name to the great plans of Jefferson." He has been called also, "the founder and father of Virginia's public school system", "the Horace Mann of Virginia", "the interpreter and fulfiller of Jefferson's dream", and "the …

Archived Law School Exams

This Torts exam, given by Professor William T. Muse on May 14, 1942, begins with the question:

Adie, desiring to repair the roof of his house, asks Buck for the loan of his ladder. Buck agrees. Adie goes on Buck 's land and takes a ladder which resembles Buck's but which belongs to Cole and which Buck had borrowed the day before. While Adie is on the roof, Cole sees his ladder and takes and carries it home. Adie, having completed the repairs, attempts to descend but, finding no ladder, remains on the roof for an hour thinking his children …

Law School Catalogues

A Law School was first established in Richmond College in 1870. In 1890 the family of the late Mr. T. C. Williams, who had been a devoted and useful trustee, donated $25,000 as the nucleus of an endowment for the Law School. In recognition of this gift, the name of the School was changed to the T. C. WILLIAMS SCHOOL OF LAW. At various times the School has received further generous gifts from members of the family of Mr. Williams. The largest of these gifts came through a bequest from Mr. T. C. Scientific Illustration, Alys Leontine D'Avesne Apr 1942

Scientific Illustration, Alys Leontine D'Avesne

Master's Theses

It may be somewhat difficult at first glance to understand the essential character of the relationship of art to science, and especially to the natural sciences. Without illustration it would be impossible either to learn or to teach these sciences . Drawings are needed in the classroom and in the laboratory to aid the teacher, and they are perhaps even more important in individual research where there is no teacher present to guide and to instruct the student .

Scientific illustration is not only an aid to teaching, it teaches by itself when properly executed. In cases where verbal description …

A History Of Hanover Town In Virginia, William Hamilton Enslow Jan 1942

A History Of Hanover Town In Virginia, William Hamilton Enslow

Master's Theses

The history of the town as such is short--scarcely seventy years--but there was of course a long interval of sketchily recorded events prior to its foundation, in the area which immediately surrounds the site. In all, the period covered by this paper is about a century and three quarters; in that time the frontier post came and went, was succeeded by the tobacco town, and that too faded, leaving only shards and foundations to mark its place.

The Ugly In Aesthetics, Francis G. Wilson Jan 1942

The Ugly In Aesthetics, Francis G. Wilson

Master's Theses

First we must admit representative ugliness tor purposes of realism, truth, and in connection with the significant the characteristic and such types. Also, we must admit distortion tor purposes of power, emotional strength, logical and organic consistency, and so forth. Possibly the ugly may be admitted to heighten beauty; and certain other forms of the ugly will be admitted artistically so long as comedy and tragedy are called art-forms.

So far, then, as beauty in the wide sense is concerned, the first category or ugliness cannot be anti-thetical to beauty because it is included in, beauty, and is a positive …
