Synthesis And Characterization Of Diamond And Boron Phosphide, K. P. Ananthanarayanan Jan 1972

Synthesis And Characterization Of Diamond And Boron Phosphide, K. P. Ananthanarayanan

Open Access Dissertations

Semiconducting diamond has been synthesized from carbon-metal melts in a 600 ton tetrahedral anvil press at about 60 kbar and 1400°c. The experimental set up, pressure and temperature calibrations, and the growth region in the pressure-temperature regime are indicated. Micrographs of synthesized crystals are shown.

The semiconducting properties of diamond, doped with boron, aluminum and titanium have been interpreted using the log R versus l/T curves. In boron-doped diamond ''high concentration" type impurity conduction occurs and the activation energies vary from 0.15 eV to 0.30 eV. The activation energies for aluminum and titanium-doped samples are found to be 0.31 eV …

Glyoxal And Estradiol Mediated Alterations In Rat Uterine Histone Acetylation, Robert Louis Procaccini Jan 1972

Glyoxal And Estradiol Mediated Alterations In Rat Uterine Histone Acetylation, Robert Louis Procaccini

Open Access Dissertations

The immature rat uterus was developed as a model in which to measure alterations in his tone acetylation in a target organ following hormonal stimulation. The effect of various glyoxal derivatives on his tone acetylation and several other parameters was measured in the uterine tissue of untreated and estradiol treated animals. Six day treatment with glyoxal monohydrate and methylglyoxal-bis-guanyl-hydrazone (Methyl-GAG) decreased uterine wet weight and partially blocked estradiol mediated alterations in uterine wet weight in animals receiving concomitant estradiol and glyoxal treatment.

The dose dependent in vitro inhibition of uterine histone acetylation is thought to occur through direct action on …

The Effect Of Modifiers Of Microsomal Electron Transport On Carbon Tetrachloride Hepatoxicity, Kenneth Alfred Suarez Jan 1972

The Effect Of Modifiers Of Microsomal Electron Transport On Carbon Tetrachloride Hepatoxicity, Kenneth Alfred Suarez

Open Access Dissertations

Phenobarbital pretreatment significantly enhanced the rise in SGOT and SGPT immediately following a three-hour exposure of rats to carbon tetrachloride by inhalation. However, these parameters of hepatotoxicity were significantly lower in rats pretreated with 3-methylcholanthrene when compared to rats pretreated with vehicle and exposed to carbon tetrachloride vapor. Levels of hepatic microsomal NADPH cytochrome c reductase and CO-binding pigment were elevated by phenobarbital pretreatment, but 3-methylcholanthrene had no effect on hepatic microsomal NADPH cytochrome c reductase. Although carbon tetrachloride exposure reduced CO-binding pigment content by 61 per cent in phenobarbital pretreated and by 39 per cent in 3-methylcholanthrene pretreated rats, …

A Dynamic Study Of A Pilot Eckey Horizontal Fractionator, Robert Kingsley Andren Jan 1972

A Dynamic Study Of A Pilot Eckey Horizontal Fractionator, Robert Kingsley Andren

Open Access Dissertations

In order that the automatic control of a process system be optimal, the dynamics of the equipment involved must be throughly understood. Distillation is a complex non-linear process and as such, many of the dynamic system parameters are difficult to predict accurately and must be determined experimentally. The purpose of this study was to develop a series of dynamic models which characterize the response of the liquid temperature on the plates of a pilot Eckey Horizontal Fractionator, to variations in liquid feed rate, liquid feed composition, and vapor feed rate. This was done by experimentally determining the frequency response of …

Beam Position Transient Response In The Controlled Optical Beam Waveguide, Edmond Francis Roy Jan 1972

Beam Position Transient Response In The Controlled Optical Beam Waveguide, Edmond Francis Roy

Open Access Master's Theses

Beam position transients in self-aligning beam waveguides are studied. The control system senses the beam position at each lens and introduces a correction to the transverse position of the. Preceding lens. The Laplace Transform of the beam position response at some (k + n)th lens as a result of a disturbance of the kth lens is found. The special case of the confocal waveguide using the integrator with gain as a control results in a time function of the beam position at the lenses equal to the product of a decaying exponential and Laguerre Polynomials. The second-order controlled …

Subjects demonstrating relaxed types of behavior were placed in the relaxed group, Subjects not demonstrating relaxed behavior were assigned to the nonrelaxed group. Eight avoidance trained subjects were put in a shocked control group and were not blocked. Later exposure to the apparatus demonstrated …

Brain Sensitivity To Barbiturates And Brain Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, Girish J. Patel Jan 1972

Brain Sensitivity To Barbiturates And Brain Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, Girish J. Patel

Open Access Master's Theses

The correlation between alteration in brain sensitivity to barbiturates and changes in brain gamma-aminobutyric acid levels was investigated. The following conditions were utilized to alter the brain sensitivity of mice or rats to barbiturates, 1) exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, 2) septal lesions, 3) treatment with desipramine, sodium nitrite or pargyline, 4) social deprivation, and 5) abrupt withdrawal following chronic barbiturate or ethanol administration. The first three of these conditions have been known to increase the brain sensitivity to barbiturates, while the last two conditions are known to decrease the sensitivity of brain neurons to barbiturates. The brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric …

The Role Of An Old Woman: A Study Of Edith Sitwell's Final Persona, Stephen William Applin Jan 1972

The Role Of An Old Woman: A Study Of Edith Sitwell's Final Persona, Stephen William Applin

Open Access Master's Theses

The year 1940 marked a radical change in the poetics of name Edith Sitwell (1887- 1964). Previously the hallmark of her poetry had been her elaborate experimentation with the sounds of words. She regarded her experimentation as a revolt against Georgian insipidity. Her findings were radical and only slowly accepted by the poetry reading public. Her later poetry, however, has very little in common with the early. In 1940, Dame Edith was 53 years old . She was too old to continue finding pleasure through the sometimes shocking wit of her early experiments. She regarded herself as an old woman, …

Land Development Policy On The Local, State, And National Levels: A Case Study Of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Thomas William Fennessey Jan 1972

Land Development Policy On The Local, State, And National Levels: A Case Study Of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Thomas William Fennessey

Open Access Master's Theses

The three primary purposes of this study are: to identify and assess existing land development policies in Narragansett, Rhode Island, to determine any deficiencies in those development policies, and to suggest possible future actions to remedy those deficiencies. Since these policies are not isolated from the dynamics of a growing community, an analysis was also performed of such basic data as land use, population, and housing to predict the effect these variables would have on the town's future development. The interrelationship of these three variables with land use policy was demonstrated.

The major land use policies of the Town were …

Solubility Of Four Aminobenzoate Esters In Water And Normal Alcohols At Several Temperatures, Peter Allen Schwartz Jan 1972

Solubility Of Four Aminobenzoate Esters In Water And Normal Alcohols At Several Temperatures, Peter Allen Schwartz

Open Access Master's Theses

Equilibrium solubilities of the first four homologous alkyl p-aminobenzoate esters were determined in methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and water at 25°, 33° and 4o° C.; the esters and the alcohols comprise separate but similar homologous series. The solution process of a solute may be considered to be the summation of two sequential steps, melting and mixing, and the magnitude of solubility depends upon temperature and the extent of interactions between solute and solvent molecules. Quantitative solute concentrations, obtained from spectrophotometric analysis, were converted by computer to mole fractions. Statistical analysis of the logarithmic mole fraction solubilities of the aminobenzoates, which were …

Ultrasonic Measurements In Binary Solutions Of Na-K And Na-Rb, Joseph Ernest Amaral Jan 1972

Ultrasonic Measurements In Binary Solutions Of Na-K And Na-Rb, Joseph Ernest Amaral

Open Access Master's Theses

The pulse-echo technique has been used to measure ultrasonic absorption and velocity in Na-K and Na-Rb alloys. Data were taken at temperatures from -5° C to 250° C using frequencies from 15 MHz to 105 MHz. It has been found that both Na-K and Na-Rb have absorption peaks near 67 atomic percent Na. The magnitude of the absorption was found to be much greater in the Na-Rb solutions. The results in Na-Kare consistent with previously reported measurements that were attributed to the equilibrium process 2Na + K⇌Na2K. However, it is further speculated that the high attenuation in Na-Rb …

Poe's Concept Of Supernal Beauty As Applied To Selected Poems, Robert Charles Angell Jan 1972

Poe's Concept Of Supernal Beauty As Applied To Selected Poems, Robert Charles Angell

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis is primarily concerned with Edgar Allan Poe's application of his aesthetic philosophies to his poetic writings. In particular, the extent to which the selected poems are successful in attaining or simulating the attainment of supernal beauty is examined. The ideas herein dealt with are those having to do with Poe's reaching for the ethereal world of the imagination through his art. While specific poems are analyzed with respect to his critical writings, this thesis never assumes that his poetry was nothing save a practical exercise of those theories. The selected poems are explored with regard to their validity …

Pollution In Penobscot And Narragansett Bays: Its Advance And Effects On The Maine And Rhode Island Shellfish Industry, Michael James Chambers Jan 1972

Pollution In Penobscot And Narragansett Bays: Its Advance And Effects On The Maine And Rhode Island Shellfish Industry, Michael James Chambers

Open Access Master's Theses

This study investigates two New England estuaries of similar configuration. Population density, type of industrial activity, degree of sewage treatment, and species of shellfish are found to be important factors in the present degradation of these bays. Unless a minimum of secondary sewage treatment is practiced in Penobscot Bay, depuration is the only economical way of utilizing future soft-shell clam stocks. In Narragansett Bay the options are greater. Because of the water temperature and the availability of clean water, among other criteria, aquaculture, depuration, transplanting, and quahog seed hatcheries may be utilized. However, the bypasses in the Providence Sewage Treatment …
