Methods For Evaluating The Value Of Intangible Assets, Jeffrey E. Jarrett

College of Business Faculty Publications

Intangible assets, intellectual property, estimating cash flow, and rates of return are concerned with the inaccuracy and biases involved in predicting earnings and rates of return. Financial reporting is the major source of data utilized by economic forecasts, accountants, and financial managers to predict future cash flow and earnings (whether per share or in aggregate). However, the records and studies of analyst forecasts have produced often dismal performance. Previous studies focused on historical analysis of past earnings forecast methodology or on generating evidence that accrual accounting justifies better forecasting performance. Objections to these areas of study come in several forms. …

In this review of Research in the Classroom, we will examine the response to these questions from three diverse research studies. We will consider the advantages and hurdles teachers and students experience when reading and/or teaching graphic novels.

A Case Of The Red Pants Mondays: The Connection Between Fandom, Tumblr, And Consumption, Megan E. Desouza

Social media networks allow for the interaction of individuals from across the globe based on mutual social connections or shared interests. These networks are of particular benefit to the propagation of fandoms. The unique search capacity of Tumblr enables the identification of fellow fans, a forum in which to engage easily in shared fandom creation, commodity consumption, and activities such as cos-play and role-play. Fandom consumption can manifest in both material and aesthetic, or cultural, forms. This paper presents the fandom of the BBC's series Sherlock as a case study of the connections between social media, fandom, and consumption. The …

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger May 2011

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger

Senior Honors Projects

Time is often considered the fourth dimension due to the fact that nothing can exist outside the confines of time. Since time is so intrinsic to the very nature of being in the world, creators of film, literature, and television, which are reflective of life, must at least implicitly confront concepts of time and temporality within their work. The intangibility of time presents many difficulties but also a great number of opportunities in accurately portraying its true function within the world.

Many literary works, films, and television programs directly confront concepts of time. Each medium with its own benefits and …

Mothers' Ways Of Making It—Or Making Do?: Making (Over) Academic Lives In Rhetoric And Composition With Children, Kim Hensley Owens, Christine Peters Cucciarre, Deborah E. Morris, Lee Nickoson, Mary P. Sheridan

Writing and Rhetoric Faculty Publications

This article focuses on five women's experiences “making it” as rhetoricians with children. Expanding the definition of success Michelle Ballif, Diane Davis and Roxanne Mountford set forth in Women's Ways of Making It in Rhetoric and Composition, the article offers suggestions for moving toward more family-friendly academic structures, not least by recognizing that the seemingly individualistic idea of choice—such as the choice to have children—rests uneasily with the often invisible structures that shape and delimit choices. The authors call for increased visibility of and acceptance for a greater range of possibilities for “making it” in the field today.

Secret Identities: Graphic Literature And The Jewish-American Experience, Brian Klotz Jun 2009

Secret Identities: Graphic Literature And The Jewish-American Experience, Brian Klotz

Senior Honors Projects

During the 1930’s and 40’s, rampant anti-Semitism prevented many Jewish-Americans from getting hired to a respectable job in publishing. Around this same time, an industry sprang up around the idea that comic strips (which had previously been confined solely to the pages of newspapers) could be printed in pamphlet form and sold on newsstands for profit. These “comic books,” while commercially successful, were considered the lowest rung on the ladder of artistic respectability, a trashy medium for children and borderline illiterates. This attitude, however, allowed it to become a field into which young Jewish-American artists and writers were not barred …

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese May 2008

Opening The Aperture: Examining Images Of War In The Press, Jeffrey Albanese

Senior Honors Projects

A number of policymakers have attributed America’s defeat in Vietnam, the first “television war,” to a collapse of public support caused by nightly news coverage of combat with associated iconic photographs and moving images. The assumptions underlying this opinion are that photographs and video footage of war have an inherent pacifistic bias, that the emotional impact of visual images can override reason, and that powerful images can drive or overturn foreign policy. This has led subsequent administrations to increase their control over the media’s coverage of war. During the Vietnam War, the press was relatively uncensored. As a response to …
