A Massive Chert Bed In The Hopkinton Formation And An Associated Boulder Train Near Strawberry Point, Clayton County, Iowa, Sherwood D. Tuttle, Alvin J. Fuelner, Richard C. Northup

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Feulner, while mapping the bedrock of Clayton county during the summer of 1951, observed numerous large chert erratics scattered over the landscape west of Strawberry Point. These erratics lie near the edge of the Iowan drift plain just south of the northfacing Niagaran escarpment, which is formed by the erosion of Silurian rocks.

Stalactitic-Like Deposits Found In A Gravel Pit In Black Hawk County, E. J. Cable Jan 1956

Stalactitic-Like Deposits Found In A Gravel Pit In Black Hawk County, E. J. Cable

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The icicle-like forms shown in Figure 1 were brought to me as fulgurites. They are not fulgurites nor are they stalactites. Fulgurites are hollow and these icicle-like forms do not show the structure of stalactites.

The Distribution Of C14 Labelled Salicylates In Rat Tissues, Esther M. Burnham, W. D. Paul, J. I. Routh Jan 1956

The Distribution Of C14 Labelled Salicylates In Rat Tissues, Esther M. Burnham, W. D. Paul, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the period of development of salicylate therapy, it was demonstrated that many body membranes were permeable to salicylates, and that appreciable quantities were excreted in the urine. With the development of a satisfactory quantitative method by Brodie et al. (1) the salicylate concentration in body fluids and urine could be determined. More recently the successful labelling of salicylates with C14 has placed investigation of salicylate distribution in animal tissues on a more practical basis. The carboxyl group of salicylic acid (2) (3) (4) and the acetyl group of acetylsalicylic acid (5) have been tagged with radioactive carbon. These …

The Gilmore City Formation At Fort Dodge, Iowa, Leo A. Thomas, Wayne W. Williams Jan 1956

The Gilmore City Formation At Fort Dodge, Iowa, Leo A. Thomas, Wayne W. Williams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1931 the Fort Dodge Limestone Company was organized for the purpose of obtaining rock from a mine located in the S. W.Y4, Sec. 24, T. 89N., R. 29W., Webster County, Iowa. Mining of this rock has been essentially continuous since that time. The rocks penetrated by the mine shaft and the working face have been described by Wood (1933). The petrography of the rocks of the working face has been described by Weissmann (1953), and by Roy, Thomas, Weissmann, and Schneider (1955) . Although all workers have agreed that the rocks of the mine arc of Mississippian age, no …

Ibex Lowensis, First Evidence Of Fossil Goat In North America, Harris A. Palmer Jan 1956

Ibex Lowensis, First Evidence Of Fossil Goat In North America, Harris A. Palmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the problems dealing with the migration of Quaternary Bovid stocks from Eurasia to North America via the Bering Straits, is the extreme fragmentary nature of the fossil record. A number of the dozen or so genera now recognized have been established on the basis of single fragmentary specimens. Many times these consist of isolated bone fragments such as horncores, partial crania, dentitions and even less diagnostic elements of the axial skeleton. As recently as 193 7 species of two genera mw to the North American continent were identified from Alaskan deposits on the basis of similar fragmentary remains …

Relationship Between Particle Size And Potassium Release In The Clarion And Marshall Soils, Raymond B. Daniels Jan 1956

Relationship Between Particle Size And Potassium Release In The Clarion And Marshall Soils, Raymond B. Daniels

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study by Lawton and Pierre (1946) of different soil types in Iowa and their potassium availability showed that the Marshall series were consistently higher in exchangeable potassium than the Clarion series. The Marshall series is developed in Wisconsin loess and is classified as a Medial Brunizem. The Clarion series is developed in Cary and Mankato till and is classified as a Minimal Brunizem. The Marshall series is dominantly a silty clay loam, whereas the Clarion series is dominantly a loam. Pratt and Morse (1954) found, when they grouped several Ohio soils by areas, the potassium release was lowest from …

Evidence Of Multiple Loess Deposition In Western Iowa, R. L. Handy, D.T. Davidson Jan 1956

Evidence Of Multiple Loess Deposition In Western Iowa, R. L. Handy, D.T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several Wisconsin Loess sections were described before the Iowa Academy of Science in 1953 (1), and data for in-place density and particle size were presented. The thickest of these sections was exposed in a newly opened quarry near Crescent City, Iowa (Fig. 1). This section was of particular interest because it showed several zones of clay concentration at different depths, and at that time it was suggested that the clayey zones might be related to lulls in deposition of the Wisconsin loess. The clayey zones divide the loess into four units which could supposedly correlate with the four advances of …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of four Alaskan areas was begun in the summer of 1954 under a program sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. The Iowa State College Engineering Experiment Station directed the study in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Iowa State College. The program was initiated to: 1. Determine the distribution of engineering soil materials m four Alaska areas. 2. Determine the engineering properties and trafficability characteristic; of these materials. 3. Determine the feasibility and best methods of stabilizing these materials for use as road and airfield building material. 4. Further the studies of geology of Alaska. 5. Attempt …

Some Shallow Earth-Resistivity Measurements In Iowa, Howard R. Dixon, Theodore L. Welp Jan 1956

Some Shallow Earth-Resistivity Measurements In Iowa, Howard R. Dixon, Theodore L. Welp

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Materials Department of the Iowa State Highway Commission has been experimenting with the electrical earth-resistivity method of geophysical exploration. During the summer of 1955 a full time crew ran extensive tests over various selected locations throughout the state of Iowa. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate and demonstrate the use of earth resistivity in preliminary subsurface reconnaissance by providing subsurface information useful in determining location, design, and construction of highways. Experiments were made with both the depth profiling and the constant depth resistivity traverse methods of field operation. Three methods were used for analysing the field data: …

Common Elements, Fred A. Brandner Jan 1956

Common Elements, Fred A. Brandner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Textbooks of Statistics, in general, scarcely mention the topic "Common Elements" and almost no articles in periodicals are written on the subject. The following are the definitions that are given. These definitions are in terms of the correlation coefficient.

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1956

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In almost all books on College Algebra, the Pascal Triangle is placed in such a position as to show the binomial coefficients in a horizontal line. This position is appropriate when the only use of the triangle is to help students remember these coefficients; but Pascal had a wider purpose in mind. Pascal's Construction. Pascal first sets up a lattice-work consisting of equal squares, assigning to each square a definite positive integer which he determines as follows. 1. The number in each square of the 1st (top) row, and also in each square of the 1st (left-hand) column is to …

Frequency Analysis Of Eegs Of Stutterers And Normal Speakers During Photic Stimulation, Robert E. Correll Jan 1956

Frequency Analysis Of Eegs Of Stutterers And Normal Speakers During Photic Stimulation, Robert E. Correll

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the past, numerous investigators have attempted to demonstrate differences between the electroencephalograms of normal speakers and stutterers. These studies have utilized both unilateral and bilateral recordings and have used measures of per cent time alpha, isomorphism (defined in terms of similarity of the waveforms of the two hemispheres) and synchronization (defined in terms of phase relationships existing between the waves in the two hemispheres). Some consistencies have been found, but many of the studies still require validation.

Comparison Of Motor Vehicle Traffic Death Rate Trends In Iowa, Washington And The U.S., Clifford O. Swanson Jan 1956

Comparison Of Motor Vehicle Traffic Death Rate Trends In Iowa, Washington And The U.S., Clifford O. Swanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a recent study (3) by the author on trends in motor vehicle fatalities, extrapolations were made for 20 years hence. The trends indicated a definite reduction in traffic death rates (deaths per 100 million vehicle miles). The rates and trends were based on data for the 20-ycar period, 1935-1954. The data used were from official figures published by the National Safety Council (2). As stated, rates are decreasing, yet we do find annual fluctuations sometimes greater than expected in each state and for the total U.S. for which it is at times difficult to give a satisfactory explanation. In …

Retention Of Skill On The Sam Complex Coordinator, Don Lewis, William F. Lowe Jan 1956

Retention Of Skill On The Sam Complex Coordinator, Don Lewis, William F. Lowe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Systematic laboratory studies of retention-retention beyond a few hours or a few days-of skill in performing complex perceptual motor tasks are in short supply. In contrast there is no shortage of anecdotal accounts of phenomenal proficiency in typing, ice skating, bicycle riding, and the like, displayed after years (and years) without practice. Largely as a consequence of anecdotes, many erudite persons (with some psychologists in the forefront among them) firmly believe that all motor skills are retained indefinitely while verbal and other symbolic materials are soon forgotten.

Scholastic Probation And Size Of High School, Martin F. Fritz, Kentner V. Fritz Jan 1956

Scholastic Probation And Size Of High School, Martin F. Fritz, Kentner V. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years, much attention has been focused on school reorganization in Iowa (cf. "Midland Schools," October and No\·- ember, 1953; ''The Iowan," December-January, 1953-54, and April.May, 1954.) Some proponents of reorganization claim that the "small high school" (a high school with total enrollment of less than 100 pupils) is not adequately preparing students for college. If true, it is to be expected that this would result in poor grades at the college len:l. One approach would be to determine whether or not there is a relationship between size of high school and scholastic probation. If it were established that …

The Effect Of Stimulus Intensities Upon Sensory Pre-Conditioning, Givens L. Thornton Jan 1956

The Effect Of Stimulus Intensities Upon Sensory Pre-Conditioning, Givens L. Thornton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The phenomenon of sensory pre-conditioning was noted originally by Brogden (3) and, for the purpose of this study, may be described in three parts as follows. In part one, Ss are presented with a number of simultaneous pairings of two neutral stimuli, e.g., bell and light. Following this, one stimulus, for example the bell, is made the CS for an avoidance response. Part three consists of presenting the other stimulus (light) for the purpose of determining to what extent it also will elicit the same response as a result of its prior association with the first.
