Techniques For Species Comparison In Violets, Norman H. Russell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the course of research on the taxonomy and evolution of various species of violets during the past ten years several techniques have been used which have proven effective in comparison of total species differences among wild violets. Two of these techniques are described below.

The Flora Of Emmet County, Lowa, B. O. Wolden Jan 1956

The Flora Of Emmet County, Lowa, B. O. Wolden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The original paper with this title, prepared in the late 1920's, was submitted for publication in 1932, and appeared in Volume 39 of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science. In the introduction to that list there was a brief description of the topography and of the natural areas of the county. It has not been considered necessary to repeat such description in this paper except to indicate some of the changes that have taken place since that time and which have affected the flora. The greatest changes, consisting of bringing the prairie under cultivation, draining most of the …

A Summer Travel Course In Field Natural History, Martin L. Grant Jan 1956

A Summer Travel Course In Field Natural History, Martin L. Grant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The most interesting, informative, and profitable course taken by the writer as an undergraduate (at Oberlin College) was a travelling field course through the northwestern states led by Dr. Lynds Jones, Professor of Ecology. In direct imitation of this, a similar course was conducted in the summer of 1955 by Iowa State Teachers College, which covered 6,600 miles, from Cedar Falls to the northwest corner of the state of Washington, through the Badlands and Black Hills, and Yellowstone, Glacier, Mt. Rainier and Olympic Parks, returning by way of the Oregon coast, Crater Lake, northeastern California, Great Salt Lake, Dinosaur Monument, …

Keys To The Iowa Species Of Calvatia And Lycoperdon, Jasper H. B. Garner Jan 1956

Keys To The Iowa Species Of Calvatia And Lycoperdon, Jasper H. B. Garner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The starting point in the nomenclature of the Gasteromycetes is Persoon's Synopsis A1 ethodica Fungorum of 1801. Many of the specimens on which Persoon based his descriptions are in his herbarium, which is now in the Rijksherbarium at Leiden, Netherlands. Perdeck (1950), as a result of his study of Persoon's herbarium, made some name changes in an attempt to clear up some of 1 he nomenclatoral confusion existing in the Lycoperdaceae. In a previous paper Garner (1955) incorporated these changes in making a revision of the genera Calvatia and Dycoperdon as treated by Kambly and Lee (1936) in "The Gasteromycetes …

A Checklist Of The Vascular Flora Of Poweshiek County, Iowa, Norman H. Russell Jan 1956

A Checklist Of The Vascular Flora Of Poweshiek County, Iowa, Norman H. Russell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In spite of the fact that Poweshiek County has been the collecting ground for such eminent professional or amateur botanists as H. W. Norris, Frank W. Johnson, and Henry S. Conard, no list of county plants, verified by herbarium specimens, has yet appeared in print. In addition, references to plants of Poweshiek County in the various papers on different genera in Iowa have been very scarce. The first edition of the "Grinnell Flora" by H. S. Conard was a list of the plants, both wild and cultivated, of Grinnell and "vicinity_," but the geographical limits of its coverage are uncertain. …

Cultural Practices And Test Weight In Oats, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans Jan 1956

Cultural Practices And Test Weight In Oats, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of the several criteria of seed quality in oats, weight per bushel, or test weight, is most universally used. The standard test weight for oats is 32 pounds per bushel, but with present-day varieties and production practices, oats produced in the Corn Belt often exceed this value by from 3 to 6 pounds. The oat seed characteristics which have been found to be correlated with test weight arc: hull percentage, seed shape and size and plumpness and density of the caryopsis. Test weight in oats has been proven to be an inherited characteristic. Barring diseases such as rust, which may …

A Photographic Technique For Measuring Plant Section Growth, B. E. Michel Jan 1956

A Photographic Technique For Measuring Plant Section Growth, B. E. Michel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When comparing the effects of growth regulators on the growth of etiolated plant sections it is desirable to measure not only the final lengths reached after some period of time, but also the rate of growth during that time. This problem has been approached in three ways.

The Fluorescence Of Differentiated And Undifferentiated Plant Tissues In The Near Ultra-Violet, David A. Yos Jan 1956

The Fluorescence Of Differentiated And Undifferentiated Plant Tissues In The Near Ultra-Violet, David A. Yos

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Luminescence phenomena have been known for perhaps as long as man has been recording history, but it has been only recently that some of these phenomena have been utilized in the study of plant tissues. Anything which can disturb the energy equilibrium within an atom of matter is at least intrinsically capable of causing that atom to emit light. As a corollary to this, any form of matter capable of absorbing energy is potentially capable of being excited to luminescence. Many biological compounds are in this category and most of them emit visible light when irradiated by invisible ultra-violet light. …

On Lentodium Squamulosum, G. W. Martin Jan 1956

On Lentodium Squamulosum, G. W. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The genus Lentodium, with its single species L. squamulosum, was established by Morgan (1895) to accommodate a fungus which had then been known for half a century. It was sent to Berkeley from Ohio by Lea in 1845 or earlier; Berkeley commented on it in that year (1845, p. 302) in the following terms: "*Lentinus tigrinus, Fr. A most remarkable state of this species has been found by Mr. Lea (n. 245) in which the gills have anastomosed, until the whole pileus and gills have become a hard, solid mass. At first sight it has quite …

A Method For Determining Stem Canker Resistance In Soybean, John M. Dunleavy Jan 1956

A Method For Determining Stem Canker Resistance In Soybean, John M. Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stem canker disease of soybean is caused by the fungus, Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora, and at present there are no soybean varieties known to be highly resistant to this disease. Stem canker takes its name from the resemblance of the discolored area of an infected stem to a canker. As the infected area on a stem enlarges, the stem is girdled and the portion of the plant above the girdled area is killed. Stem canker seriously affects soybeans in the northcentral region of the United States and has been reported to cause heavy losses (Athow and Caldwell, 1954; and Dunleavy, …

Classification Of The Fungi Lmperfecti, Roger D. Goos Jan 1956

Classification Of The Fungi Lmperfecti, Roger D. Goos

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years, some dissatisfaction has been expressed concerning the commonly used classification of the Fungi Imperfecti. The discontent with the present system has arisen from the fact that the characteristics used to delimit taxa (i.e. spore color and septation, arrangement of the conidiophores, etc.) often results in the separation of morphologically similar genera, while at the same time placing together what seem to be unrelated genera. The present system was proposed by Saccardo when the major interest in the Fungi Imperfecti was in their role as plant pathogens. Now these fungi are being studied more intensively than ever before, …
