Examining Middle Eastern Influences On Jazz In The 1950s And 1960s, Sopon Suwannakit Dec 2023

Examining Middle Eastern Influences On Jazz In The 1950s And 1960s, Sopon Suwannakit

Dissertations

During the 1950s and 1960s, amidst the backdrop of the Cold War, the influences of Middle Eastern music on jazz became more pronounced. In a strategic move, the U.S. State Department dispatched jazz musicians to the Middle East to promote the genre. This initiative inadvertently led these ambassadors of jazz to bring back and incorporate Middle Eastern musical elements into their craft. Today, the echoes of the Middle East are prominently heard in jazz, evident in melodic structures, rhythms, instruments, and beyond. Yet, despite its profound impact, the Middle Eastern music influence remains underacknowledged in jazz circles. This research delves …

Establishing Guidelines For Achieving Optimal Individual Posture In Hornists, Daniel Alan Nebel Dec 2023

Establishing Guidelines For Achieving Optimal Individual Posture In Hornists, Daniel Alan Nebel

Dissertations

Potentially debilitating performance-related pain (PRP) is common among professional and aspiring instrumentalists, can lead to significant loss of income, and sometimes end a career. Postural misalignments that lead to PRP can develop early in students’ training and is often successfully addressed by a music teacher recommending a change in technique. The nature of a musician’s PRP is dependent on how their instrument is held; there has never been an in-depth study of PRP specifically for hornists. This dissertation summarizes the current relevant research of PRP in musicians and hornists, conducts and analyzes a comprehensive hornist-specific health survey, seeks to identify …

Gendered Singing Training: A Comparison Of Estelle Liebling And Richard Miller’S Strategies For Teaching Across Fach., Kristi Muzzio Dec 2023

Gendered Singing Training: A Comparison Of Estelle Liebling And Richard Miller’S Strategies For Teaching Across Fach., Kristi Muzzio

Dissertations

In the classical singing field, vocal Fach is an important part of a singer’s identity. Fach classification is initially assigned by gender and further separated within each gender based on characteristics of sound and appearance. There is significant debate over the similarity of techniques used to teach each Fach. Discussion among singers and the prevalence of publications related to training one specific voice type suggests that there are notable differences in technique across Fach, and by extension, gender. This research compares Richard Miller’s books on soprano, tenor, and baritone voice training with Estelle Liebling’s courses for soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and …

An Analysis And Performance Guide Of Three New Works For Clarinet And Saxophone Duo, Aaron Patrick Burr

Dissertations

The clarinet and saxophone duo has become one of the standard chamber ensembles available to both instruments. However, there has been a lack of scholarship surrounding this ensemble and its music. This dissertation seeks to bring awareness to the duo and its music through providing an analysis and performance guide of three new works commissioned by Duo Velox. The first piece, Shots Fired by Caleb Westby is written for B-flat clarinet, tenor saxophone, and electronic playback. Shots Fired derives much of its thematic material from a post-tonal version of a theme from the Columbine Alma Mater by Frank Ticheli. The …

Pedagogical Approaches To Polytempor- Ality And Form Process In György Ligeti’S Études Pour Piano, Premier Livre, Dielan Wu

Dissertations

The first book of Études pour piano is the only cycle considered by the composer György Ligeti (1923–2006) among his eighteen piano études. The formal classification of the cycle, the six études fail to fit in the term of classical form due to its highly conceptual nature. According to Ligeti’s description on temporal concept in his études, an examination of the temporal issues is in need to decode the complex rhythmic structures from the perceptual perspective. Through the examination of the temporal organization, the Études is a compilation of in non-directed linear processes, and each étude is a self-containment via …

Davidsbündler: Robert Schumann, Theodor Kirchner, And An Intimate Musical World, Dandan Liu Powell Aug 2023

Davidsbündler: Robert Schumann, Theodor Kirchner, And An Intimate Musical World, Dandan Liu Powell

Dissertations

Theodor Kirchner is an accomplished Romantic composer in the nineteenth century. He wrote over one thousand piano pieces, and most of them have a strong influence by his mentor Robert Schumann. However, little attention has been paid to his musical works. His piano works either disappeared or are not prevalent outside of the German-speaking world. The study of Kirchner and the relationship between Robert and Kirchner’s music is not sufficient. Clara Schumann, as the wife of Robert Schumann and the lover of Theodor Kirchner also inspired both composers’ music works. Therefore, this dissertation will focus on introducing Theodor Kirchner and …

Although composed prior to the pandemic, the breath of life could bring comfort and a salve to the hurt and pain of humankind caused by the pandemic but will also affect the emotional state of loss for years to come for all humanity. This work exhibits Forrest’s use of acousmatic electronics with choir and orchestra. Biblical texts as well as poetry written by three poets from …

Baker’s output spans a wide variety of genres and styles, including compositions for jazz band, symphony orchestra, choir, and various chamber ensembles. Using elements from his background in both jazz and classical music, Baker’s musical language is one that creates a true synthesis of styles, especially when writing in a third stream context. An Examination Of Musical Pitch/Color Correspondence In Music, Arts, And Non-Arts Students And Adults, Luciano Silvestri Jr.

Dissertations

Chromesthesia is the involuntary combination of a visual color response to a musical stimulus. Previous research has associated the presence of absolute pitch with color responses to musical pitch; however, recent studies indicated that color associations were also made amongst those who did not possess absolute pitch. Eighty-four participants to various extent and of varying ages representing backgrounds in music and in arts (as well as those with neither background) took part in a series of experiments to determine if a color/music pitch connection was prevalent in their responses. Additionally, participants were tested individually regarding the presence of consistent visual …

Chamber Music In The Dominican Republic: New Arrangements For Ensemble With Piano, Laura Gisselle Pimentel Ferreira May 2023

Chamber Music In The Dominican Republic: New Arrangements For Ensemble With Piano, Laura Gisselle Pimentel Ferreira

Dissertations

Although the catalogue of instrumental works written by Dominican composers during the 20th century includes a large number of pieces for ensemble, the repertoire dedicated to piano chamber music is comparatively scarce. While it is possible to find duets, especially for piano and violin, flute, or sometimes cello, the role of the piano is secondary, mostly for accompaniment, instead of having its own voice. The number of works written for an ensemble comprised of piano and at least two more players is almost non-existent. The lack of attention to this type of composition makes it practically impossible for a pianist …

Considerations And Pedagogical Approaches For Transitioning From Soprano To Mezzo-Soprano, Caitlin Hammon Moore May 2023

Considerations And Pedagogical Approaches For Transitioning From Soprano To Mezzo-Soprano, Caitlin Hammon Moore

Dissertations

Within the operatic and classical music realms, Fach is an identifier based on voice classification, as well as non-vocal factors such as acting style and physical appearance. For singers, stating one’s Fach is a way to advertise oneself for suitable operatic roles and concert solos. However, not all singers fit perfectly into a Fach, and some choose to switch between Fach categories over the course of their careers. Although such choices require careful consideration with the potential to impact a career, many have found success after transitioning to a lower Fach. While several studies have investigated singers transitioning to higher …

“Ici On Chante En Français”: Giving A Voice To Cajun Culture, Tessa Espinosa Dec 2022

“Ici On Chante En Français”: Giving A Voice To Cajun Culture, Tessa Espinosa

Dissertations

“Ici on parle Français” (“French is spoken here”) is a popular adage in South Louisiana and can be seen on signage and T-shirts in mom-and-pop stores throughout the heart of Cajun territory. This phrase reflects cultural pride and tenacity in a small but hearty group of people whose identity was nearly stripped away. Musical settings of Cajun French verse constituted a vital part of this culture. Why is this music important? It exists as historical preservation, a means to explore roots in a time when so many are rootless. These songs have been passed down through oral history for generations. …

The Ballybriar Heist: An Original Composition And The Incorporation Of Folk Music And Tintinnabuli Influences, Conor Darling Mulroy

Dissertations

The Ballybriar Heist is a thirty-eight minute five-movement piece for symphony orchestra. It is based on a condensed version of the short story “The Ballybriar Heist.” The music draws influence from a variety of sources. Through analyzing folk music and seeing its influence in concert hall compositions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, one sees how these folk traditions evolved and were incorporated into concert hall music. Composers collected and transcribed folk music, giving them new ways to approach composition. Examining the music and performance practice of traditional Irish music shows how these traditions and performances influenced composers’ writing as …

The Haitian Méringue Through Stylized Piano Compositions From 1880-1930, William Leroy Harned

Dissertations

This study primarily describes the Haitian méringue from a historical analysis and a collective musical analysis of digital editions published from 2016 to 2020 that include previously unavailable piano compositions from Haiti’s first composers. Secondarily, this study clarifies the performance practice of innovative rhythmic notations from Haiti and Puerto Rico to indicate a relaxed syncopation of the tresillo-based five-beat syncopated rhythm. The history of the development of the méringue involves the creolization of mainly European and African dances. Comparison with compositions of origin dances reveals common structures between them. The European salon style inspired these Haitian compositions that resemble Romantic …

The Lullaby As Art Song: Engaging Repertoire For Study And Performance, Carissa Scroggins May 2021

The Lullaby As Art Song: Engaging Repertoire For Study And Performance, Carissa Scroggins

Dissertations

When selecting repertoire, teachers of singing do not often turn to lullabies. The consensus is they are too simple in melody, texture, and harmony to warrant attention. However, this commonly held view should be reconsidered because lullabies can offer dramatic text settings. Lullabies can be divided into two categories: those for practical use and those for performance. The latter are composed as art songs written from many perspectives. They can be nationalistic, violent, frustrated, funny, and can use sleep as a metaphor for the release of death. This wealth of subject matter and variety of styles and skill levels found …

Romantic Undertones In Revolutionary France: The Case For Tarare As Spark For The Revolution, Sean Robert Stephenson May 2021

Romantic Undertones In Revolutionary France: The Case For Tarare As Spark For The Revolution, Sean Robert Stephenson

Dissertations

Music is almost never cited among the causes of the French Revolution. Other arts are occasionally mentioned, such as painting and poetry, as are more obvious disciplines including philosophy and literature, which could directly disseminate the ideals of the Enlightenment. Despite this, music is only referenced insofar as how it was impacted by the Revolution, rather than how it may have played a part in the development of revolutionary sentiment. The purpose of this dissertation is to make a case for music as a cultural cause for the French Revolution by analyzing a relatively unknown opera, Tarare, by composer Antonio …

Pride And Prejudice, An Operatic Work For Ensemble Based On Jane Austen’S Novel, With Comparisons To Mozart’S Ensemble Opera Works, Sondheim’S Ensemble Musicals, And Mark Adamo’S Little Women, Arlene Brenda Siagian May 2021

Pride And Prejudice, An Operatic Work For Ensemble Based On Jane Austen’S Novel, With Comparisons To Mozart’S Ensemble Opera Works, Sondheim’S Ensemble Musicals, And Mark Adamo’S Little Women, Arlene Brenda Siagian

Dissertations

Pride and Prejudice is an original composition. It adapts the storyline and various characters from Jane’s Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice, into an operatic ensemble work for the stage and theatre. The project is the result of an exploration into the characteristics and qualities of an ensemble opera, a work that derives its synergy from the interactions and collaborative efforts of memorable and varied performers. In an operatic setting, when a performer is immersed in the portrayal of a character, that nature is amplified when communicating with another role just as intentional and skillful. The sense of personality and singleness …

A Study In Effective Teaching Methods For Jazz Voice Technique In Higher Education, Jenna Mclean May 2021

A Study In Effective Teaching Methods For Jazz Voice Technique In Higher Education, Jenna Mclean

Dissertations

Academic study of jazz vocal styles is quickly becoming more commonplace and widely accepted at universities worldwide. Because this is a relatively new field as compared to Western classical styles, there are fewer educators who have substantial knowledge of vocal pedagogy specifically as it relates to jazz and Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM), resulting in a wide range of teaching approaches. Furthermore, many jazz voice teachers are tasked with the responsibility of educating students in improvisation, theory, arranging, and style in addition to their responsibility to teach technique. This dissertation defines necessary elements of vocal technique in jazz and evaluates the …

Later in his life, in Tres Piezas for violin solo, he experimented with …

Three In One: The Style, Structure, And Sound Of Thad Jones As A Jazz Trumpeter, Shawn Edward Williams Dec 2020

Three In One: The Style, Structure, And Sound Of Thad Jones As A Jazz Trumpeter, Shawn Edward Williams

Dissertations

Thad Jones’s role as a big-band composer, arranger and leader of the famed Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra formed the basis for his international reputation in the jazz world. However, it can be demonstrated that Jones’s improvisational style as a jazz trumpet soloist directly informed his composition and arranging style. Long before Jones became an active composer and arranger, he spent decades performing as a soloist with various small groups. Jones spent his formative years in Pontiac, Michigan playing with the Arcadia Club Band, a family band formed by his uncle, where he worked alongside his brother Hank Jones. Jones continued …
