Transcriptions Of Renaissance And Baroque Polyphony For High School Band, Laura E. Zamzow

Ten vocal and instrumental pieces from the Renaissance and early Baroque have been selected and transcribed to provide a unique opportunity for high school band students. Through these transcriptions, students will gain historical perspective, including information about period instruments, composers and genres. Elements of music theory, style, and musicianship can be explored. The polyphonic quality of the Renaissance transcriptions will teach students to hear and perform independent melodic lines. Each transcription has been edited for modern instruments and concert band instrumentation. Dr. David Conte (b. 1955) is a contemporary composer and one of the last students of the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Conte is one of the more prominent and well-respected American composers of our day, having composed a variety of works for both instruments and voice. This document covers two of his major works for SATB chorus and accompanimental ensembles consisting of piano four-hands and assorted percussion instruments. Western music as introduced to Thailand in the sixteenth century with the use of Western trumpet in the royal court, sacred music in the Thai Catholic Church, Western songs and instrumental practices inside Western communities. Siamese songs of the seventeenth century were preserved in the French records and French Baroque musical compositions to reveal the political relationship between Siam and France. In the early nineteenth century, American civil war songs, marching songs, and Protestant hymns entered Siam.
