Economic Integration As A Tool Of Development In Central America., Walter John Phair Dec 1967

Economic Integration As A Tool Of Development In Central America., Walter John Phair

Latin American Studies ETDs

The underlying purpose of this paper is to analyze economic integration as & tool of development in Central America. To do so, it will be necessary to investigate not only the past performance of the Common Market and the chief problems presently being faced, but the prospects for future development as well. Attention will be focused primarily on the post-1960 period despite the fact that the movement toward union began in the early 1950 1 s. The reason for this is that 1960 marked the beginning of what might be called the "accelerated phase" of the region's integration. It was …

Reader's Guide To The Poetry Of JuliáN Del Casal, Esther Kay Whitt Nelson Dec 1967

Reader's Guide To The Poetry Of JuliáN Del Casal, Esther Kay Whitt Nelson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

It has been my purpose in this guide to make the literary world of the Cuban Modernist Julian del Casal more accessible to readers and thereby render more pleasurable and comprehensible his poetry: to this end I have attempted to identify all persons, places, and literary references in his poetical works. I have also included a brief synopsis of each poem and its metrical form. The Introduction has been provided to give the reader a general description of the poet's work and life in order to illuminate those subjective elements that might otherwise prove obscure. In the guide itself, each …

Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Northern Part Of The South Virgin Mountains, Clark County, Nevada, J. R. Morgan Dec 1967

Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Northern Part Of The South Virgin Mountains, Clark County, Nevada, J. R. Morgan

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The northern part of the South Virgin Mountains is within the transition zone between the Basin and Range Province and the High Plateaus of the Colorado Plateau. Sedimentary formations in the Paleozoic are represented by more than 6,800 feet of carbonate and elastic sediments. Ordovician rocks are thought to be present, but are not confirmed. Rocks of Silurian age are absent from the area. Triassic and Jurassic units, the Moenkopi Formation, Chinle Formation and the Aztec Sandstone, have a composite thickness of more than 3,700 feet. There are elastic and minor carbonate rocks, all of continental origin, that are of …

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin Nov 1967

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

INTRODUCTION

This paper will amount to an inquiry into the mathematical structure and properties of a matrix of approximate integration formulas due to Werner Romberg 1 which have found considerable favor in numerical analysis during the past decade. Like other devices for approximate integration the Romberg method has its origin in the exhaustion techniques developed by the Greeks for determining the areas of figures enclosed by lines in the plane. It is particularly closely associated with the scheme employed by Archimedes2 (circa 250 B.C.) for approximating the value of [3.14]. This involves a doubling process which is essentially the basis …

Simone Weil's Search For Unity Through The Union Of Contradictories., Barbara J. Brim Nov 1967

Simone Weil's Search For Unity Through The Union Of Contradictories., Barbara J. Brim

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

There is a good deal of modern literature particularly that of the post World War II period, which might be best described as “distorted” author deliberately focuses on some negative aspect of life, usually the sordid, and exaggerates it to an unbelievable nightmare. The author makes his point all too well. In fact, some of these works are masterpieces of human understanding. However, when one book after another presents the same negative theme, treated in the same way for a kind of shock effect, we begin to feel as though literature has as its sole aim a kind of psychological …

The Role Of The United States In The Adolfo De La Huerta Rebellion, 1923-1924, William G. Best Nov 1967

The Role Of The United States In The Adolfo De La Huerta Rebellion, 1923-1924, William G. Best

History ETDs

Preface:

In December 1923 Adolfo de la Huerta led a rebellion against the government of President Alvaro Obregón. It lasted into the last three months of 1924 and culminated in the total defeat of the rebels. The United States at once came to the support of Obregón and sided his government with munitions shipments, an embargo on arms against the rebels, naval demonstrations aimed at frustrating the naval operations of the rebels, and diplomatic services and support.

The main focus of this study is the position and participation of the United States in the la Huerta rebellion. It is not …

A Political Biography Of Frank A. Hubbell, 1862-1929., Carol N. Callary Nov 1967

A Political Biography Of Frank A. Hubbell, 1862-1929., Carol N. Callary

History ETDs

Frank A. Hubbell was successful during his lifetime, both as an independent livestock grower and as a force in New Mexican political life from 1888 until 1929. Hubbell did not leave a permanent written record, a fact which has made the names of Miguel A. Otero, Holm O. Bursum, Thomas Benton Catron, W. H. Andrews and Harvey B. Fergusson better known. However, he was in many respects their equal in influence and in the achievement of political results. Hubbell was the product of both the Spanish and Anglo-American cultures and was thus able to combine the character of a rural …

A History Of Medicine And Health In Kansas: Ottawa County, 1860-1900, Linda Ann Mckee Nov 1967

A History Of Medicine And Health In Kansas: Ottawa County, 1860-1900, Linda Ann Mckee

History ETDs

The trials and sufferings of American pioneers have been a favorite subject for writers of frontier history and frontier novels. Stories of extreme hardships caused by Indian raids, drouths, floods, blizzards, swollen streams, and grasshopper and locust infestations have made most Americans aware that their forefathers had hard lives on the frontier. But a fallacy has distorted the picture: Many people believe that pioneers were sturdy and strong and in such good health that they were able to overcome obstacles with relative ease. Such was not the case. Those who first inhabited the unsettled regions of the country did not, …

Consumer Bankruptcies In Bernalillo County, New Mexico, William C. Madden Jr. Nov 1967

Consumer Bankruptcies In Bernalillo County, New Mexico, William C. Madden Jr.

Economics ETDs

A serious problem in the United States is the increasing number of bankruptcies filed each year. The number of bankruptcies in the last decade alone tripled. In 1956, there were 68,086 bankruptcies, and in 1966, the number reached a new record of 192,354.1 This increase, however, is not attributed to business failures, but to the rise in consumer bankruptcies; that is, individuals and families who seek alleviation from their financial distress in the courtroom. Since 1950, more than three-fourths of all bankruptcies filed in the United States District Courts have been consumer types. Presently they constitute over ninety percent of …

Changes In Eeg, Temperature, And Behavior As A Function Of Prolonged Sleep Deprivation, G. Vernon Pegram Jr Oct 1967

Changes In Eeg, Temperature, And Behavior As A Function Of Prolonged Sleep Deprivation, G. Vernon Pegram Jr

Psychology ETDs

An experiment using 6 Macaca mulatta monkeys was conducted to determine the physiological and behavioral changes concomitant with 176 hours of sleep deprivation. The physiological changes were observed by recording EEG and cortical brain temperature continuously throughout 5 days of baseline, 8 days of deprivation and 8 days of recovery. Primarily behavioral changes were observed by performance on a delayed matched-to-sample task during which the Ss worked for food pellets. The rhesus has a definite stage 4 and PS recovery which was apparently critical in counteracting the stress of sleep deprivation. Further a stage 2 recovery was observed that had …

A Study Of The Synthesis And Reactions Of Condensed Pyriadazines, Lorraine Marie Distefano Oct 1967

A Study Of The Synthesis And Reactions Of Condensed Pyriadazines, Lorraine Marie Distefano

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A special interest in a nitramine rearrangement prompted the preparation of 1,4-diaminopyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine and the nitration of this compound. Several reactions of the intermediates, which were synthesized en route to 1,4-diaminopyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine, were studied. Strong evidence for the existence of keto-enol tautomerism was found in the case of 1,4-dihydroxypyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine and its derivatives.

Some reactions of 5, 8-dichloropyrazino [2,3-d] pyridazine were studied with particular interest in the nucleophilic displacement of azides and in the nitration of 5,8-dianilinopyrazino [2,3-d] pyridazine.

The nitration of diaminophthalazine was also attempted in order to perform an acid catalyzed nitramine rearrangement from one …

Criteria For The Determination Of Flow Direction In Volcanic Rocks, Eugene Irwin Smith Oct 1967

Criteria For The Determination Of Flow Direction In Volcanic Rocks, Eugene Irwin Smith

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A statistical method employing the Tukey Chi-square test and the vector method was used for determining the direction of primary flow lineation in volcanic rocks. Oriented samples were collected from the McCartys Basalt, the porphyritic andesite of Mount Taylor and the Bandelier and Battleship Rock Rhyolite Tuffs of the Jemez Mountains. All these localities are in New Mexico. Measurements were taken of the elongate particles in each horizontal thin section. The flow lineation direction in each slide was determined statistically by computing values of vector mean or chi-square orientation. The McCartys flow samples showed the lowest reliability. This was probably …

The Overall Force-Deformation Relations Of Latticed Frames, Syamal C. Dasgupta Sep 1967

The Overall Force-Deformation Relations Of Latticed Frames, Syamal C. Dasgupta

Civil Engineering ETDs

Most elastic bodies in the field of civil engineering are composed of discrete elements which are interconnected in some way. A distinct characteristic of such systems is the presence of jump discontinuity in the physical properties of the systems. Trusses, ribbed shells, multistory frames, continuous and folded plates, built-in columns, etc. are a few examples of this kind. From the conventional methods of analysis of these systems, it can be realized that considerable effort is being expended to approximate the actual system by .means of a relatively simpler system. Most of the established methods of analysis of such systems involve …

Effects Of Hypothermia And Saline Injection Of Cesium-137 And Sodium-22 Metabolism In White Rats, Glenn Michael Dempsey Sep 1967

Effects Of Hypothermia And Saline Injection Of Cesium-137 And Sodium-22 Metabolism In White Rats, Glenn Michael Dempsey

Biology ETDs

The excretion rates and distribution of cesium-137 and sodium-22 were studied in white rats exposed to cold or over-hydration, or both.

A single intraperitoneal injection of cesium-137 or sodium-22 was administered to rats housed in metabolic cages. Rate of isotope excretion was determined by daily measurements of urine, feces, and the whole animal with a gamma scintillation spectrometer.

In one study rats were injected intraperitoneally with saline solution equivalent to 10% of the body weight one hour after having been injected with cesium-137. After 23 hours the rats were sacrificed and individual tissue counts were taken to be compared with …

The Logic Of United States Aid To Latin America, Robert Kenneth Godwin Sep 1967

The Logic Of United States Aid To Latin America, Robert Kenneth Godwin

Political Science ETDs

Since the inauguration of the Alliance for progress five years ago, there has ben an increasing number of coupe d’état in Latin America. Governments have been overthrown in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. The majority of these coups overthrow constitutionally elected left-of-center governments. It is this type of government that has been recognized by the United States government as the best suited for successfully carrying out the goals of the Alliance for Progress.

Geographic Variation In The Ord's Kangaroo Rat In The Upper Rio Grande Valley, Keith B. Grisham Aug 1967

Geographic Variation In The Ord's Kangaroo Rat In The Upper Rio Grande Valley, Keith B. Grisham

Biology ETDs

The Ord's Kangaroo Rat has the most extensive geographic range of any Dipodonmys species, extending from southern Canada to within 20 degrees north of the equator on the Mexican Plateau. Testifying to intraspecific variation throughout this range, the most recent revision of subspecies (Setzer, 1949) liststhirty-five subspecies of Dipodomys ordii. This kangaroo rat is found throughout the Rio Grande Valley in suitable habitat and extends as far north as Saguache in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. I am interested in the geographic variation found in the upper Rio Grande Valley, here defined as that portion of the valley from …

A Manual And Checklist For Planning And Construction Of Secondary School Music Facilities, Jimmy D. Edmondson Aug 1967

A Manual And Checklist For Planning And Construction Of Secondary School Music Facilities, Jimmy D. Edmondson

Music ETDs

In the development of todays music programs in the secondary school, constant and dedicated thought to aims, objectives, and the need for the improvement of the physical plant have been stressed by music educators and school administrators. Much has been done in the areas of aims and objectives. Improvement of the physical plant has been limited in written and resource material and also in experience for the planning and development of the music plant. The results of these limitations have been poorly planned, designed, and constructed facilities.

A Queuing Theory Approach To Short-Haul Movements Under Constraints Of Time, Volume, And Unknown Behavioral Considerations., James Gerard Morris Aug 1967

A Queuing Theory Approach To Short-Haul Movements Under Constraints Of Time, Volume, And Unknown Behavioral Considerations., James Gerard Morris

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The problem of parking in general and student parking in particular has become a matter of considerable interest on the University of New Mexico campus. Open parking space within a five-minute walking distance to central classroom buildings has become virtually non-existent during the peak hours of classroom activity. Evidence of student discontent over this problem is readily apparent in their letters to the student newspaper. Unbeknownst to most students, the situation is due to worsen. The University of New Mexico architect and Chief Planner, Robert Riley, has stated that within three years, no central campus parking will be available to …

A Cinematographical Analysis Of The Mechanical Differences Between Running On A Motor-Driven Threadmill And A Stationary Surface., Joseph C. Bowman Aug 1967

A Cinematographical Analysis Of The Mechanical Differences Between Running On A Motor-Driven Threadmill And A Stationary Surface., Joseph C. Bowman

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

It was the purpose of this study to determine, through a cinematographical analysis, if running on a treadmill produced a change in running style or form by-comparing eleven measurements including body lean, various angles of the extremities, length of stride, and. vertical body movement.

An investigation of the literature revealed that little had been done to analyze the true mechanics of running on a treadmill. There has been a large amount of research and experimentation using treadmills in universities and industry to produce a controlled situation for physiological and kinesiological studies.

The major research method used in conducting this study …

A Microbiological Evaluation Of A Laminar Down-Flow Hood, Robert Henry Staat Aug 1967

A Microbiological Evaluation Of A Laminar Down-Flow Hood, Robert Henry Staat

Biology ETDs

An Envirco Model DF-400 laminar down flow hood with an exhaust HEPA filter adaptation was tested for its efficiency by using Bacillus subtilis var. niger as an indicator organism. The experimental emphasis was on the bacterial spore penetration of the frontal barrier and of the exhaust system. Interior and exterior challenges were made. The interior challenge utilized two heights and progressed from the front of the hood to the rear. Bacterial migration on the hood surface, surface impingement, ambient air conditions, and exhaust air were checked. All ambient air sampling was done with Andersen samplers. The exterior challenge consisted of …

The Effects Of Ability Grouping In Multi-Cultural School Situations, Joseph A. Sarthory Jul 1967

The Effects Of Ability Grouping In Multi-Cultural School Situations, Joseph A. Sarthory

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Ability grouping in one form or another has been common practice in American schools for the past one hundred years. One of the earliest attempts to provide for children of different ability levels occurred in St. Louis in 1867 (Goldberg, Passow, and Justman, 1966, p. 2). The practice reached its peak in the second and third decades of this century. Two factors were responsible for this ascendance. One was a changing social philosophy which espoused the doctrine of education for all rather than for the preferred few. Another was the high failure rate induced by a traditional curriculum which could …

Analysis Of The Conflict Between School Administration And Nea And Aft Affiliates In New Mexico, John J. Seaberg Jr. Jul 1967

Analysis Of The Conflict Between School Administration And Nea And Aft Affiliates In New Mexico, John J. Seaberg Jr.

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The intensified demand by organized teachers to participate in the formulation of policies that affect them, to bargain or negotiate collectively concerning salaries and other conditions of employment, are among the most salient problems confronting the educational enterprise. The present militancy and collective activity of teacher organizations can be viewed as a revolt against the traditional bureaucratic pattern of school organization. One means of dealing with authority and unilateral control is through bargaining and its institutionalized form -- collective negotiations.

Julian Hawthorne, Novelist Of The Real And The Supernatural: A Study Of Bressant, Archibald Malmaison, And A Fool Of Nature, Martha Mayes Park Jun 1967

Julian Hawthorne, Novelist Of The Real And The Supernatural: A Study Of Bressant, Archibald Malmaison, And A Fool Of Nature, Martha Mayes Park

English Language and Literature ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

Hawthorne's attitude toward his own fiction was usually casual and commercial. He wrote rapidly, sometimes producing several books a year. His first two novels, Bressant and Idolatry, show promise that was never achieved. He baffled the contemporary critics, for while his work was artistically superior to that of Edgar Fawcett and E. P. Roe, he used melodrama and supernatural machinery appealing to their followers. And he could not be tagged as a realist, despite his use of realistic and naturalistic elements, because of all the romantic trappings. Nor did he venture often as far as Francis …

A Model Of Strategy For Competitive Bidding In The Construction Industry., Thomas L. Morin Jun 1967

A Model Of Strategy For Competitive Bidding In The Construction Industry., Thomas L. Morin

Civil Engineering ETDs

Competitive bidding is an intriguing, unique, and sometimes critical activity of management. In the construction industry competitive bidding is particularly important since the vast majority of private and public work is obtained by bidding against other contractors. In fact, Clough (1)* points out that competitive bidding, "the contract method of construction," accounts for an estimated 95 percent of all public construction work. Basically, the bidding process consists of several competing contractors submitting closed bids to a client who selects the bid most desirable to him. The client will usually, and may be legally required to, accept the lowest bid. Obviously, …

Toward An Understanding Of The Later Philosophy Of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stephen Amdur Jun 1967

Toward An Understanding Of The Later Philosophy Of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stephen Amdur

Philosophy ETDs

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to understanding the later philosophy (1930-1951) of Ludwig Wittgenstein is that, unlike his earlier work, the later work has no explicit organization. I have attempted to show a way around this obstacle by showing the legitimacy of imposing upon the later work the following order:

First, I have taken his later work to stand opposed to the position of "traditional epistemology." I have attempted to show how from traditional epistemology the "empiricist theory of meaning" stems, and how from that theory of meaning stem certain familiar problems of academic philosophy.

Second, I have attempted to show …

A Test Of Acquired Distinctiveness And Equivalence Of Cues, Thomas E. Malloy Jun 1967

A Test Of Acquired Distinctiveness And Equivalence Of Cues, Thomas E. Malloy

Psychology ETDs

The experiment tested the acquired distinctiveness of cues (ADC) and acquired equivalence of cues (AEC) hypotheses. The ADC hypothesis predicts that learning distinctive responses to similar stimuli will decrease the amount of stimulus generalization (SG) between the stimuli. The AEC hypothesis predicts that learning the same response to two stimuli will increase the amount SG between the stimuli. The design used to test these hypotheses was a mixed list design; thus fifty Ss were run in a single group to which all the experimental conditions were administered. The experiment was conducted in h=three stages. In the first stage (pretraining) eight …

The Interaction Of External And Mediating Cues As A Function Of Type Of Stimulus Pretraining And Intralist Stimulus Similarity, David M. Del Castillo Jun 1967

The Interaction Of External And Mediating Cues As A Function Of Type Of Stimulus Pretraining And Intralist Stimulus Similarity, David M. Del Castillo

Psychology ETDs

This experiment was design0d to test two implications derived from the hypotheses of acquired distinctiveness and equivalence of cues, and to determine the way in which similarity among external stimuli and distinctive vs. common mediating cues, interact to affect the learned distinctiveness or equivalence of cues. It was predicted from the acquired distinctiveness hypotheses that relative]y greater positive transfer would result when distinctive mediating responses were attached to highly similar stimuli than when these same responses were attached to stimuli that were initially low in similarity. A parallel prediction, derived from the acquired equivalence hypothesis, was that negative transfer would …
