O'Kei: An American Novel, Boris Pilnyak, Ronald D. Leblanc (Translator)
Faculty Publications
On January 4, 1931, Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938) wrote a letter to Joseph Stalin, pleading with the Soviet leader to grant him permission to travel to the United States in order to conduct research for an ambitious book project he was undertaking that would compare communist Russia favorably to capitalist America. Pilnyak’s request received official approval, and a few months later the writer set off for the U.S., arriving in New York by steamer on March 12, 1931, and remaining in the country until August 3, 1931. During his nearly five-month stay in America, Pilnyak became acquainted with a number of …

A Toolkit For Collegiate Internships: An Orientation Tool For Stronger Partnerships, Misty Kennedy
A Toolkit For Collegiate Internships: An Orientation Tool For Stronger Partnerships, Misty Kennedy
M.S. in Leadership
In a perfect world, collegiate internships are valuable for employers, students, and institutions. These partnerships can offer an avenue for an institution-to-business pipeline for employers, streamline students into careers that make use of their degrees, and increase the intuition’s employability rating. The reality is that stakeholders often fall short of the expectations that they have for one another; students are left looking for guidance, employers are frustrated with unfinished tasks, and educators are exasperated about how to bridge the gap between the two parties. Plans to develop a hospitality-focused internship program within the newly formed Office of Ceremonies and Events …

College Student Leadership Development: How Communication Gaps Hinder Institutional Leadership Initiatives, Kyle Hastbacka
College Student Leadership Development: How Communication Gaps Hinder Institutional Leadership Initiatives, Kyle Hastbacka
M.S. in Leadership
Colleges and universities everywhere have stated missions for their institutions—many of which include leadership development for their students. Upon arrival to campus, however, disconnected departments prevent these institutions from achieving these goals by having competing initiatives. This divide creates a pressure on students that then inhibits their development in applying academic lessons to real-life situations. Through strategic campus partnerships, these gaps can close to assist institutions in developing active leadership development programs for students that will result in more marketable job applicants post-graduation. This study provides campus employees an everyday toolkit for implementation of leadership development initiatives that will prepare …
The Role Of Leadership In A Law Enforcement Organization’S Morale, Brian Fleming
The Role Of Leadership In A Law Enforcement Organization’S Morale, Brian Fleming
M.S. in Leadership
This research project digs into the idea of what leadership styles are like in law enforcement and military organizations, and what can be done to improve morale. At the same time it looks at the connection between leadership style and communication, and the connection between those to morale. Academic literature has shown employee job satisfaction and morale is connected to leadership styles, and that the more communication there is from leadership, the more connected employees feel to their organization. Employees believe that the more involved a leader is in a policing organization, the more likely they are to trust in …
Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Hr Toolkit, Kelly Ducharme
Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Hr Toolkit, Kelly Ducharme
M.S. in Leadership
The purpose of this research was to identify why an inclusive work environment is needed, and what it takes to build an inclusive workplace environment for transgender and gender non-conforming employees. Additional research done in this study shows that a lack of an inclusive policy can be problematic as it not only can lead to inequitable treatment for transgender and gender-non-conforming employees, but also that merely having a policy is not enough (Mizock, 2018). The research also supports the need for policies to be informative, promote greater awareness, be reviewed periodically, and, most important, enforced. Based on the outcome of …
Why Does Our Culture Treat Driving Speed Limits With Minimum Value?, Eric Scott
Why Does Our Culture Treat Driving Speed Limits With Minimum Value?, Eric Scott
M.S. in Leadership
The primary purpose of this study is for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, the Transportation System Management Operations Center, and the New Hampshire Department of Safety to shed light on why drivers speed. A secondary purpose is for these agencies to recognize the possible origins of the perceived culture of speed/speeding on highways in New Hampshire and to develop strategies to shift the culture to one which respects reasonable, safe speeds, with respect for posted speed limits. These research findings indicate that states using speed limit messaging signs as part of public awareness for drivers helps reduce speeding. Additional …
Vulnerability In Higher Education Leadership, Melissa Plante
Vulnerability In Higher Education Leadership, Melissa Plante
M.S. in Leadership
Since 2010, vulnerability has been a topic more popularized by Dr. Brené Brown. Her TED Talk, The Power of Vulnerability, followed by several books of hers have offered a different perspective on personal vulnerability and how we lead in various arenas. Through researching Brown’s extensive work on vulnerability and courage along with other literature, this research project will review vulnerability and how it relates to individual leadership styles, trust, and gender. A survey of 80+ higher education professionals will explore their perception of vulnerability, the relationship between their reported vulnerability levels and leadership style (authentic, ethical, or transformational).
