Hippocampus And Retrosplenial Cortex Combine Path Integration Signals For Successful Navigation, Katherine R. Sherrill, Ugur M. Erdem, Robert S. Ross, Thackery I. Brown, Chantal E. Stern, Michael E. Hasselmo
Psychology
The current study used fMRI in humans to examine goal-directed navigation in an open field environment. We designed a task that required participants to encode survey-level spatial information and subsequently navigate to a goal location in either first person, third person, or survey perspectives. Critically, no distinguishing landmarks or goal location markers were present in the environment, thereby requiring participants to rely on path integration mechanisms for successful navigation. We focused our analysis on mechanisms related to navigation and mechanisms tracking linear distance to the goal location. Successful navigation required translation of encoded survey-level map information for orientation and implementation …

Abstract
In many ways, James A. Van Allen defined and “invented” modern space research. His example showed the way for government-university partners to pursue basic research that also served important national and international goals. He was a tireless advocate for space exploration and for the role of space science in the spectrum of national priorities.

Beyond Prejudice And Pride: The Human Sciences In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Latin America, Julia E. Rodriguez
History
Grappling with problematics of status and hierarchy, recent literature on the history of the human sciences in Latin America has gone through three overlapping phases. First, the scholarship has reflected a dialogue between Latin American scientists and their European colleagues, characterized by the “center/periphery” model of scientific diffusion. Next, scholars drew on postcolonial theory to undermine the power of the “center” and to recover the role of local agents, including both elites and subalterns. In the wake of numerous studies embracing both models, the way has been cleared to look at multiple dimensions simultaneously. Histories of the human sciences in …

Sublethal Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Rebecca L. Anderson, Christopher C. Chabot
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
The hemolymph of the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is harvested from over 500,000 animals annually to produce Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), a medically important product used to detect pathogenic bacteria. Declining abundance of spawning Limulus females in heavily harvested regions suggests deleterious effects of this activity, and while mortality rates of the harvest process are known to be 10%–30%, sublethal behavioral and physiological effects are not known. In this study, we determined the impact of the harvest process on locomotion and hemocyanin levels of 28 female horseshoe crabs. While mortality rates after bleeding (18%) were similar to previous studies, …

All UNH Survey Center Polls
Only a very small percent of Granite Staters plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day and few approve of stores opening on the holiday. Most New Hampshire residents have just enough money to cover the costs of holiday gifts and say they plan to spend about the same amount on gifts as last year.
