Metadata Made Simple, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

Metadata schemes come in a dizzying array of shapes, sizes, formats, and purposes, from the refreshingly simple, to the incomprehensibly complex, and each with its own acronym. This diversity can at first make metadata cataloging seem overwhelming and foreign, but in practice is can be quite simple and surprisingly familiar. In this session we will review basic metadata concepts, overview common schemes, discuss how new schemes relate to standard library cataloging practices, and how they are used to foster collaboration, sharing, and long-term collection management.

Knowledge Organization, Sherry L. Vellucci

Since Svenonius analyzed the research base in bibliographic control in 1990, the intervening years have seen major shifts in the focus of information organization in academic libraries. New technologies continue to reshape the nature and content of catalogs, stretch the boundaries of classification research, and provide new alternatives for the organization of information. Research studies have rigorously analyzed the structure of the Anglo- American Cataloguing Rules using entity-relationship modeling and expanded on the bibliographic and authority relationship research to develop new data models (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records [FRBR] and Functional Requirements and Numbering of Authority Records [FRANAR]). Applied research …

The Metadata Education And Research Information Commons (Meric): A Collaborative Teaching And Research Initiative, Sherry L. Vellucci, Ingrid Hsieh-Yee, William E. Moen

University Library Scholarship

The networked environment forced a sea change in Library and Information Science (LIS) education. Most LIS programs offer a mixed-mode of instruction that integrates online learning materials with more traditional classroom pedagogical methods and faculty are now responsible for developing content and digital learning objects. The teaching commons in a networked environment is one way to share, modify and repurpose learning objects while reducing the costs to educational institutions of developing course materials totally inhouse. It also provides a venue for sharing ideas, practices, and expertise in order to provide the best learning experience for students. Because metadata education has …

Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek Oct 2003

Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek

University Library Scholarship

Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 44 online journals surveyed, 14 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Comparison of finding tools showed excellent coverage of errata by Science Citation Index, lack …
