The Lake Mead Fertilization Project is a research program designed to investigate the potential for using large-scale artificial fertilization to enhance the game fisheries of this reservoir through an increase in the population of threadfin shad, the system's primary forage species. A substantial decline in the population of largemouth bass, together with poor condition of adult striped bass, are the two major issues affecting the Lake Mead game fisheries. Both issues have been hypothesized to be a result of an inadequate amount of forage in the reservoir. Previous studies have in turn suggested that a major factor limiting the shad …

In Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, the shallow alluvial aquifer zone is a possible source of contamination to the principal alluvial aquifers that provide 30% of the public drinking water supply for the valley. Development of the principal aquifers has lowered pressure head in the principal aquifers and created the potential for downward seepage from the shallow aquifer zone. This study was undertaken to characterize the hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry of the shallow alluvial aquifer zone and to compare the hydrogeochemistry of the shallow and principal alluvial aquifer zones.

Argon photoion spectra have been obtained for the first time in coincidence with K-LL and K-LM Auger electrons, as a function of photon energy. The simplified charge distributions which result exhibit a much more pronounced photon-energy dependence than do the more complicated noncoincident spectra. In the near-K-threshold region, Rydberg shakeoff of np levels, populated by resonant excitation of K electrons, occurs with significant probability, as do double-Auger processes and recapture of the K photoelectron through postcollision interaction.

A novel method is described that combines the production of ions by laser ablation with an ion‐trap technique for the measurement of thermal‐energy charge‐transfer rates of multiply charged ions and neutrals. The charge‐transfer rate is determined by measuring the rate of loss of stored ions from the trap. Verification of the calibration of the apparatus is demonstrated through investigation of charge transfer of N₂ and N²⁺, which has been studied by another group. Procambarus clarkii are found in extremely low numbers throughout Lake Mead, AZ-NV. The crayfish are an important dietary component for game fish. Enhancement of the crayfish population would broaden the fishery forage base. Crayfish were stocked and monitored in a study cove on Saddle Island to determine if the Procambarus clarkii population could be enhanced. A trapping survey of the area after the following reproductive season yielded low numbers of crayfish. A comparison of pre-stocking and post-stocking catch per trap day (CPTD) values revealed no significant increase in the population. The Middle Member of the Lower Cambrian Deep Spring Formation at Mount Dunfee, Nevada contains a diverse assemblage of stromatolites that formed on a tide- and storm-dominated, siliciclastic-influenced, carbonate shelf. The stromatolites formed in a shallow subtidal environment within and near active oolite shoals under strongly focused currents. The stromatolites occur in four different lithofacies: (1) bioherms of digitate stromatolites, (2) bioherms and biostromes of inclined stromatolites, (3) isolated forms of massive and hemispheroidal stromatolites, and (4) a biostrome of cryptomicrobial boundstones. The first three lithofacies are interpreted as microbial reefs. They had topographic relief, formed in active agitated waters, …

Yucca Mountain, in southern Nevada, is being studied by the Department of Energy and the State of Nevada as the site of high-level nuclear waste repository. Geochemical and isotopic modeling were used in this thesis to define the relationship of the volcanic tuff aquifers and aquitards to the underlying regional carbonate ground-water system. The chemical evolution of aground water as it passes through a hypothetical tuffaceous aquifer was developed using computer models PHREEQE, WATEQDR and BALANCE. This study evaluated the developmental gains of sixteen handicapped children who attended an early intervention program at an urban university. The subjects ranged in age from twenty-four months to sixty-six months and included a variety of conditions. A holistic, non-categorical developmental approach was utilized for intervention specifically focusing on early childhood special education. Parental involvement was encouraged. The subjects were taught by graduate students enrolled in a personnel preparation masters degree program, and consultation support services, such as physical therapy and speech therapy, were provided. A total of 249 samples of horn material from bighorn sheep was collected from nine locations. The concentrations of eight elements were determined in all samples by inductively coupled argon plasma spectroscopy. Year of horn growth was determined for 154 of the samples. All elements of concentrations varied significantly with respect to location. Some elements varied similarly to other elements with respect to location, but most locations exhibited unique element concentration profiles. Six of eight elements exhibited significant variation with respect to year of horn growth. A general pattern of annual element concentration fluctuation appeared to emerge. Generally, for a …

This study examined the relationship between reaction time (RT) and intelligence. Fifteen female and nine male caucasian undergraduates and one black male undergraduate ranging in age from 19 to 38 served as subjects. The measure of intelligence was the Otis-Quick Scoring Mental Ability Test. An Apple MacIntosh personal computer was used to present stimuli and measure reaction time. There were four RT conditions; simple reaction time, and three complex conditions in which no cue appeared, a correct cue, or an incorrect cue appeared. A significant correlation was found between the correct cue/no cue difference score (r = {dollar}-{dollar}.43, p {dollar}<{dollar}.05).

This thesis presents a comparative archeological analysis of window glass collections recovered from five historic archeological sites located in southern Nevada spanning the years from 1866 to the 1960s. The comparative analysis is used to test the validity of the chronological scheme created by other researchers. We propose an algorithm for simulating atomic registers, test-and-set, fetch-and-add, and read-modify-write registers in a message passing system. The algorithm is fault tolerant and works correctly in presence of up to (N/2) -1 node failures where N is the number of processors in the system. The high resilience of the algorithm is obtained by using randomized consensus algorithms and a robust communication primitive. The use of this primitive allows a processor to exchange local information with a majority of processors in a consistent way, and therefore to take decisions safely. We have made the first measurement of the thermal energy charge transfer rate of Mo{dollar}\sp{6+}{dollar} and neutral argon. This measurement was carried out using a technique that combines the production of ions by laser ablation and an ion trap. The multiply charged ions produced by laser ablation are cooled by crossed beams collision. These ions are stored in a radio-frequency ion trap. The charge transfer rate is determined by measuring the rate of loss of stored ions in the trap. Various systems of anthropometry have been developed through the years in an attempt to elucidate important characteristics of the human dentition. Few methods are currently relied upon as valuable indicators of age, race or sex; The computerized study of anterior tooth positions is an attempt at further elucidation of age, race and sex characteristics. Bite marks in wax from a general population sample of known age, race and sex are the basis for this computerized study. The computerized procedure allows for the examination of minute variation in tooth position. Twelve teeth in total are analyzed for every specimen.

Velocity modulation laser spectroscopy has proven to be a successful spectroscopic technique for the study of molecular ions; indeed, it has become the conventional technique. However, there are a number of limitations to velocity modulation in its conventional form. First, there is a background arising from r.f. pick-up or optical emission. Because the background is at the same frequency as the desired signals, the background is hard to eliminate. Fluctuations in the background level can make it difficult to detect signals. The operation of a coaxial ion beam/laser beam experimental apparatus is described, in which an ion beam is overlapped by a laser beam and the ions are Doppler-tuned into resonance. The experimental apparatus is suitable for the study of both positive and negative ions. Resonant transitions are reported in C{dollar}\sb2\sp{-}{dollar} and in CO{dollar}\sp{+}{dollar}. In C{dollar}\sb2\sp{-}{dollar}, a two-photon resonant photodetachment experiment was performed, with detection of fast neutral C{dollar}\sb2{dollar}. The experiment yields a measurement of the R(10) line of the 1-0 band in the B-X electronic transition. This paper provides a thirty-lesson creative drama unit for teaching poetry to high school students. This was part of the Lake Mead Fertilization Project, designed to assess feasability of increasing survivorship of juvenile shad by boosting phosphate, thereby increasing algal and zooplankton biomass, during the shad spawning period. Recently, investigators interested in the most efficient means by which to present text on computer screens have directed their efforts, largely, toward optimizing the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) display format. This research has led to the discovery, for example, that overlapping information across segments interferes with comprehension. The present study further investigates this issue by comparing RSVP to another frequently used text display format, the leading format. The thesis, using Husserlian phenomenology, presents a descriptive, analytical approach for theatrical works. The methodology consists of two parts: "feeling" and "meaning." "Feeling" covers the reader/viewer's experience of the work; "meaning" covers the source of that experience in the work. An introductory portion asks the analyzer to describe the autonomous aspects of the work. Although the right to privacy is not actually enumerated in the Constitution, over a century of common law precedent and judicial interpretation has authorized certain personal activities as being outside the scope of governmental regulation. The constitutional defense of such freedoms have been regarded as Fourteenth Amendment due process guarantees to life, liberty, and property. In Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court ruled that proscribing the use of contraceptives to married couples was unduly burdensome.
