A Gay Date With History: A History Of The Boston Lgbt Film Festival, Andrew Elder

George Mansour has been booking film in Boston-area movie theaters for 46 years. In the early 1980s, in addition to booking films for more mainstream commercial and art movie houses like the Orson Welles in Cambridge and the Nickelodeon just outside Kenmore Square, Mansour booked films for the South Station Cinema, a gay porn house in Boston. His work for the South Station Cinema, Mansour told The History Project in a recent interview, was the catalyst for what would become the Boston LGBT Film Festival.

We report a novel photoacoustic Z-scan (PAZ-scan) technique that combines the advantages offered by the conventional Z-scan method and the sensitivity of the photoacoustic detection. The sample is scanned through the focused laser beam and the generated photoacoustic signal is recorded using a 10 MHz focused ultrasound transducer. Since the signal strength is directly proportional to the optical absorption, PAZ-scan displays nonlinear behavior depicting the nonlinear optical absorption of the material. Among many advantages, our experiments on mouse blood show that PAZ-scan can potentially be used as a standard technique to calibrate contrast agents used in theranostics in general and …

Objective: Several common methods for measuring treatment response present a snapshot of depression symptoms. The construct of estimated depression-free days (DFDs) simultaneously captures treatment outcome and estimates the patient’s experience of depression over time. The study compared this measure with traditional measures used in depression treatment research. Methods: This secondary data analysis was based on data from the Improving Mood—Promoting Access to Collaborative Treatment trial, a multisite depression treatment study conducted in 18 primary care clinics in five states and representing eight health care sys- tems. As debates on reform of global environmental governance intensify, the future of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has come into acute political focus. Many argue that the organization has faltered in its role as the UN's leading agency for the environment. In this article, I use historical institutional analysis in combination with current international relations and management theory to explain UNEP's creation and evolution. Having described how the creators of UNEP envisioned the nascent organization, I analyze its subsequent performance, identifying the key factors that have shaped its record. Antitakeover Amendments And Managerial Entrenchment: New Evidence From Investment Policy And Ceo Compensation, Atreya Chakraborty, Shahbaz Sheikh

We explore the relation between antitakeover amendments and firm investment in long-term assets. Empirical results indicate that an increase in the G-index of Gompers et al. (2003) is associated with less investment in R&D and reduced capital expenditures. These results suggest that protection from takeover threat increases managerial entrenchment and results in underinvestment. We also find that this increased entrenchment is associated with higher total and cash compensation and fewer performance incentives for managers, suggesting that protected managers influence their own pay. These results are robust to a number of robustness checks and remain significant after controlling for industry effects. …

Objective: This study examined posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a potential moderating variable in the relationship between social support and elevated suicide risk in a sample of treatment-seeking Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans. Method: As part of routine care, self-reported marital status, satisfaction with social networks, PTSD, and recent suicidality were assessed in Veterans (N 5 431) referred for mental health services at a large Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Logistic regression analyses were conducted using this cross- sectional data sample to test predictions of diminished influence of social support on suicide risk in Veterans reporting PTSD. Childhood asthma is a critical public health problem of urban centers in the United States and other industrialized nations. Population-based and laboratory research studies indicate that psychosocial stress differentially affects asthma expression. Witnessing or experiencing community violence is a psychosocial stressor that results in long-term biological changes that may in turn contribute to asthma morbidity. This is a review of the literature that examines the exposure to violence as a psychosocial stressor that is independently associated with asthma morbidity even after adjustment for income, housing, and other adverse life events. ABSTRACT PURPOSE We wanted to describe the vocabulary and narrative context of pri- mary care physicians’ inquiries about suicide. METHODS One hundred fifty-two primary care physicians (53% to 61% of those approached) were randomly recruited from 4 sites in Northern California and Rochester, New York, to participate in a study assessing the effect of a patient’s request for antidepressant medication on a physician’s prescribing behavior. The purpose of this study is to develop greater depth of understanding regarding educational leadership development in the five northwestern provinces (Shaanxi, Yinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, and Ningxia) of the People's Republic of China. The researchers used a mixed method approach of surveys and focused group interviews to gather data regarding the current state of educational leadership training in this under-developed region of China. Findings indicate that most of the educational leaders included in this study have limited teaching experience and relatively low levels of formal education and few, if any, opportunities for training and professional development. Abstract: Prevalence of tender points (TP), and widespread pain and fibromyalgia, as well as the relationship between TP and widespread pain and mobility, was examined in 585 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 78.2 years, 63.4% female). Pain was based on location (none, single site, multisite, widespread). Mobility was measured by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), gait speed, and self-reported (S-R) mobility difficulty. Tender-point count and health characteristics (ie, BMI, chronic conditions, analgesic use, number of medications, depression, and blocks walked per week) were assessed. Several participants had 3 or more TP (22.1%) although prevalence of criteria-based fibromyalgia was low …
