Analysis Of The Induction And Wake Evolution Of An Offshore Floating Wind Turbine, Thomas Sebastian, Matthew Lackner
Analysis Of The Induction And Wake Evolution Of An Offshore Floating Wind Turbine, Thomas Sebastian, Matthew Lackner
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publication Series
The degrees-of-freedom associated with offshore floating wind turbines (OFWTs) result in a more dynamic flow field. The resulting aerodynamic loads may be significantly influenced by these motions via perturbations in the evolving wake. This is of great interest in terms of OFWT design, placement and simulation. This study presents free vortex wake method (FVM) simulations of the NREL 5-MW wind turbine of a variety of platforms, operating in a range of wind speeds synthesized platform motion time series. Motion-induced wake perturbations are observed to affect induction. Transitions between windmill and propeller states are also observed.

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) – such as unusual heat waves, hurricanes, floods, and droughts – can dramatically affect ecological and evolutionary processes, and these events are projected to become more frequent and more intense with ongoing climate change. However, the implications of ECEs for biological invasions remain poorly understood. Using concepts and empirical evidence from invasion ecology, we identify mechanisms by which ECEs may influence the invasion process, from initial introduction through establishment and spread. We summarize how ECEs can enhance invasions by promoting the transport of propagules into new regions, by decreasing the resistance of native communities to establishment, …

Eb-5 Financing Program: Option For Financing Development In The Hospitality Industry, Serena Shen, Francis A. Kwansa
Journal of Hospitality Financial Management
Congress created the EB-5 visa program in 1990 specifically to attract foreign private investment to finance business development while providing a pathway to permanent residency in the U.S. As a non-traditional alternative source of financing for hotel developers, this program has gained importance in the last several years partly due to the 2008 economic recession, the program’s affordability and flexibility, and hotels’ capacity to create jobs to meet the requirements of the program.

Effects Of The 2008 Obama Presidential Campaign On White Racial Prejudice, Seth K. Goldman
Effects Of The 2008 Obama Presidential Campaign On White Racial Prejudice, Seth K. Goldman
Communication Department Faculty Publication Series
Research on the importance of race in the 2008 presidential campaign has focused almost exclusively on how white racial prejudice influenced vote choice. Instead, I test a theory about how mass public exposure to Obama influenced white racial prejudice. This is the first study to assess the impact of exposure to Obama on individual-level changes in prejudice using nationally representative panel data collected during the campaign. Throughout the campaign, innumerable images of Obama and his family contradicted negative racial stereotypes and changed the balance of black exemplars in mass media in a positive direction, thus causing reductions in prejudice among …

We synthesized a series of epoxysiloxane oligomers with controllable viscosity and polarity and developed upon them a thermal-curable nanoimprint resist that was cross-linked in air at 110°C within 30 s if preexposed to UV light. The oligomers were designed and synthesized via hydrosilylation of 4-vinyl-cyclohexane-1,2-epoxide with poly(methylhydrosiloxane) with tunable viscosity, polarity, and cross-linking density. The resist exhibits excellent chemical and physical properties such as insensitivity toward oxygen, strong mechanical strength, and high etching resistance. Using this resist, nanoscale patterns of different geometries with feature sizes as small as 30 nm were fabricated via a nanoimprint process based on UV-assisted thermal …

Recent advances in microelectronics and biosensors are enabling developments of innovative biochips for advanced healthcare by providing fully integrated platforms for continuous monitoring of a large set of human disease biomarkers. Continuous monitoring of several human metabolites can be addressed by using fully integrated and minimally invasive devices located in the sub-cutis, typically in the peritoneal region. This extends the techniques of continuous monitoring of glucose currently being pursued with diabetic patients. However, several issues have to be considered in order to succeed in developing fully integrated and minimally invasive implantable devices. These innovative devices require a high-degree of integration, …
Phonotactics As Phonology: Knowledge Of A Complex Restriction In Dutch, René Krager, Joe Pater
Phonotactics As Phonology: Knowledge Of A Complex Restriction In Dutch, René Krager, Joe Pater
Linguistics Department Faculty Publication Series
The Dutch lexicon contains very few sequences of a long vowel followed by a consonant cluster, where the second member of the cluster is a non-coronal. We provide experimental evidence that Dutch speakers have implicit knowledge of this gap, which cannot be reduced to the probability of segmental sequences or to word-likeness as measured by neighborhood density. The experiment also suggests that the ill-formedness of this sequence is mediated by syllable structure: it has a weaker effect on judgments when the last consonant begins a new syllable. We provide an account in terms of Hayes and Wilson's Maximum Entropy model …

Background
The global initiative ‘Treatment 2.0’ calls for expanding the evidence base of optimal HIV service delivery models to maximize HIV case detection and retention in care. However limited systematic assessment has been conducted in countries with concentrated HIV epidemic. We aimed to assess HIV service availability and service connectedness in Vietnam.
Methods
We developed a new analytical framework of the continuum of prevention and care (COPC). Using the framework, we examined HIV service delivery in Vietnam. Specifically, we analyzed HIV service availability including geographical distribution and decentralization and service connectedness across multiple services and dimensions. We then identified system-related …
Planar Polygon Extraction And Merging From Depth Images, Joydeep Biswas, Manuela M. Veloso
Planar Polygon Extraction And Merging From Depth Images, Joydeep Biswas, Manuela M. Veloso
Computer Science Department Faculty Publication Series
— There has been considerable interest recently in building 3D maps of environments using inexpensive depth cameras like the Microsoft Kinect sensor. We exploit the fact that typical indoor scenes have an abundance of planar features by modeling environments as sets of plane polygons. To this end, we build upon the Fast Sampling Plane Filtering (FSPF) algorithm that extracts points belonging to local neighborhoods of planes from depth images, even in the presence of clutter. We introduce an algorithm that uses the FSPF-generated plane filtered point clouds to generate convex polygons from individual observed depth images. We then contribute an …

Self-Learning Variable Structure Control For A Class Of Sensor-Actuator Systems, Sanfeng Cheng, Shuai Li, Bo Liu, Yuesheng Lou, Yongsheng Liang
Computer Science Department Faculty Publication Series
Variable structure strategy is widely used for the control of sensor-actuator systems modeled by Euler-Lagrange equations. However, accurate knowledge on the model structure and model parameters are often required for the control design. In this paper, we consider model-free variable structure control of a class of sensor-actuator systems, where only the online input and output of the system are available while the mathematic model of the system is unknown. The problem is formulated from an optimal control perspective and the implicit form of the control law are analytically obtained by using the principle of optimality. The control law and the …

Although it is commonly assumed that social support positively predicts health, the empirical evidence has been inconsistent. We argue that three moderating factors must be considered: (1) support-approving norms (cultural context); (2) support-requiring situations (stressful events); and (3) support-accepting personal style (low neuroticism). Our large-scale cross-cultural survey of Japanese and US adults found significant associations between perceived support and health. The association was more strongly evident among Japanese (from a support-approving cultural context) who reported high life stress (in a support-requiring situation). Moreover, the link between support and health was especially pronounced if these Japanese were low in neuroticism.
Increasing The Rate Of Pertussis Immunity Using The Tdap Immunization In Primary Care Patients 19 To 64 Years Of Age, Dorothy J. Cook
Increasing The Rate Of Pertussis Immunity Using The Tdap Immunization In Primary Care Patients 19 To 64 Years Of Age, Dorothy J. Cook
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
There has been an increase in the preventable communicable disease known as Pertussis as the result of waning immunity in adolescents and adults. Waning immunity is the loss of protective antibodies over a period of time. Despite the availability of a new immunization in 2005, adult immunization rates do not meet Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Healthy People 2020 goal. Adult immunizations remain a challenge. Preventive healthcare is the keystone to providing routine vaccination coverage. It is usually the point of entry into the health care system.
The theoretical model used was the Precaution Adoption Model, which allowed the provider …

Using An Evidence Based Practice Informatics Guided Medication Safety Intervention To Improve Medication Safety Among Community Dwelling Older Adults, Raeann G. Leblanc
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Medication safety and prevention of medication related problems are important issues in promoting and maintaining health and safety in one’s home for community dwelling older adults. Assessment of medications and management of a medication schedule are essential elements of medication safety, medication review, and medication care coordination. The Framework for Geriatric Homecare Excellence (Collaboration for Home Care Advances and Practices, 2009) is used as the foundation of this project to improve medication management, and promote and maintain health and safety at home. An in-home medication assessment was completed, using a medication management software informatics system to review medications, identify medication …
