This dissertation examines the memory of Ras Beirut and the various claims to its exceptionalism. I frame its history as a landscape of memory born of the convergence of narratives of exceptionalism. On the one hand, Ras Beirut's landscape inspired Anglo-American missionary future providence such that they chose it as the site of their college on a hill, the Syrian Protestant College (SPC, later renamed the American University of Beirut [AUB]). English learners (ELs) represent one of the fastest growing student populations in the United States. Given that language can serve as a barrier in EL performance, test accommodations are provided to help level the playing field and allow ELs to better demonstrate their true performance level. Test accommodations on the computer offer the ability to collect new types of data difficult to obtain via paper-and-pencil tests. Specifically, these data can be used as additional sources of validity evidence when examining test accommodations. This dissertation looks for possible observable signals of tensor metric perturbations sourced during slow roll inflation from decay of the inflaton field into other intermediary fields. We focus on two main scenarios, one of explosive production of intermediary fields for a short period during inflation and another of prolonged production of vectors due to a derivative coupling of the vectors with the inflaton field. We only find a possible observable signal of tensor perturbations in the second case.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Exclusively found in citrus peels, the inhibitory effects of polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) on 3 human non-small cell lung cancer cells have been investigated. Results showed that monodemethylated PMFs at 5-position potently inhibited lung cancer cells than those of their permethoxylated counterparts. The inhibition of cancer cells caused by monodemethylated PMFs was associated with both extensive cell cycle arrest and apoptosis as a result of modulation of key oncogenic signaling proteins. Treatment with different bioactive compounds in combination may enhance inhibitory effects on lung cancer due to their synergistic interaction among these …

Establishing valid and reliable passing scores is a vital activity for any examination used to make classification decisions. Although there are many different approaches to setting passing scores, this thesis is focused specifically on the Angoff standard setting method. The Angoff method is a test-centric classical test theory based approach to estimating performance standards. In the Angoff method each judge estimates the proportion of minimally competent examinees who will answer each item correctly. We tested the effects of elevated carbon dioxide and ozone on growth, pollen and allergen production of Timothy grass (Phleum pratense L.). On paper and pencil multiple choice tests, the potential for examinees to mark their answers in incorrect locations presents a serious threat to the validity of test score interpretations. When an examinee skips one or more items (i.e., answers out of sequence) but fails to accurately reflect the size of that skip on their answer sheet, that can trigger a string of misaligned responses called shift errors. This work focuses on understanding the buckling deformation mechanisms of bending, wrinkling, and folding that occur on the surfaces and interfaces of polymer systems. We gained fundamental insight into the formation mechanism of these buckled structures for thin glassy films placed on an elastomeric substrate. By taking advantage of geometric confinement, we demonstrated new strategies in controlling wrinkling morphologies. We were able to achieve surfaces with controlled patterned structures which will have a broad impact in optical, adhesive, microelectronics, and microfluidics applications.

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is the most common brain cancer and one of the most fatal forms of cancer overall. The average survival time is 10-14 months, and less than 10% of patients survive more than 5 years after diagnosis. It is characterized by extreme vasculature, chemo/radioresistance, and invasiveness into the normal brain. The current standard of care, which includes surgical removal of tumor, radiation, and the chemotherapeutic agent temozolomide, initially stunt tumor growth. In 2002, Giroux showed that every contact structure had a corresponding open book decomposition. This was the converse to a previous construction of Thurston and Winkelnkemper, and made open books a vital tool in the study of contact three-manifolds. We extend these results to contact orbifolds, i.e. spaces that are locally diffeomorphic to the quotient of a contact manifold and a compatible finite group action. This involves adapting some of the main concepts and constructions of three dimensional contact geometry to the orbifold setting.

We have modelled structures and dynamics of hydrogen bond networks that form from imidazoles tethered to oligomeric aliphatic backbones in crystalline and glassy phases. We have studied the behavior of oligomers containing 5 or 10 imidazole groups. These systems have been simulated over the range 100-900 K with constantpressure molecular dynamics using the AMBER 94 force field, which was found to show good agreement with ab initio calculations on hydrogen bond strengths and imidazole rotational barriers. In this dissertation, I examine the nature and structure of consciousness. Conscious experience is often said to be phenomenally unified, and subjects of consciousness are often self-conscious. I ask whether these features necessarily accompany conscious experience. Is it necessarily the case, for instance, that all of a conscious subject's experiences at a time are phenomenally unified? And is it necessarily the case that subjects of consciousness are self-conscious whenever they are conscious? I argue that the answer to the former is affirmative and the latter negative.

Objective:The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a parenting program designed specifically for hyperactive preschoolers. Method: Participants were 31 preschool-aged children whose parents were randomly assigned to a treatment or waitlist group. Parents who were assigned to the treatment group took part in a 14-week parenting program that involved teaching parenting strategies to manage hyperactive and disruptive behavior as well as emotion socialization strategies to increase children's emotion regulation. Green anoles are small lizards of the Southeastern United States. They possess an extensible throat-fan called a dewlap. Males have larger dewlaps and display them more often than females. Displays occur during courtship, during agonistic interaction, and during encounters with potential predators. The size of the dewlap of male green anoles is positively correlated with maximum bite force capacity. Bite force capacity, in turn, is predictive of the winner during agonistic interactions.
