The Evolution Of The Swastika : From Symbol Of Peace To Tool Of Hate, Lindsey L. Turnbull Jan 2010

The Evolution Of The Swastika : From Symbol Of Peace To Tool Of Hate, Lindsey L. Turnbull

HIM 1990-2015

Few figures in the history of the Americas are surrounded with more colorful lore and acclamation than the Cuban politician, teacher, patriot, and poet Jose Marti. Among Marti's literary contributions, his Ismaelillo, a collection of fifteen poems published in 1882, claims prominence as both Marti's first book of poems and as a seminal Latin American text. Celebrated for its sincere communication of paternal love and lauded as the genesis of Hispanic literary modernism, Ismaelillo captures the longing of an exiled father separated from his son and homeland. Its language is at once evocative of classical Spanish literature and innovative, incorporating …

Contemporary Hijra Identity In Guyana: Colonial And Postcolonial Transformations In Hijra Gender Identity, Shainna Ali Jan 2010

Contemporary Hijra Identity In Guyana: Colonial And Postcolonial Transformations In Hijra Gender Identity, Shainna Ali

HIM 1990-2015

Before European colonialism, inhabitants of Guyana were Amerindians scattered across the “land of many waters” (Glasgow 1970:6; Rabe 2005:5). During the era of imperialism (1499-Guyanese Independence May 1966), the Dutch and British utilized indigenous and African slave labor as well as indentured servants from Asia to harvest cash crops (Glasgow 1970:131; Whitehead 2010:53). The British brought indentured servants across the kala pani, or dark water, from India to Guyana under the pretense of a better life. Under the harsh restrictions of colonial life, the Indian indentured laborers, negatively referred to as coolies, were culturally suppressed. Virtually, all aspects of daily …

Syncretism In Contemporary Pagan Purification Practices, Sara K. Blackwelder Jan 2010

Syncretism In Contemporary Pagan Purification Practices, Sara K. Blackwelder

HIM 1990-2015

Purification, which involves ceremonial acts or customs employed to gain purity in order td create sacred spaces, represents a vital aspect of religious practice both historically and cross-culturally (Cunningham 2003.(1988]:48). Preparations for passing into sacred spaces of worship are important elements of ritual life for nearly all faith communities. Mt thesis has two important research goals: (1) to examine the purification practices of contemporary Paganism; and, (2) analyze the degree to which contemporary Pagans have adapted a syncretic approach to these cleansing rituals. With regards to the former goal, I address the following three questions: what is the significance of …

Review Of Factors Affecting The Lgbt Population When Choosing A Surrogate Decision-Maker, Christina Stewart Browning Jan 2010

Review Of Factors Affecting The Lgbt Population When Choosing A Surrogate Decision-Maker, Christina Stewart Browning

HIM 1990-2015

Choosing a surrogate to make medical decisions for a patient is an emotionally challenging task. In hospital settings, it is estimated over 86% of life saving medical decisions have been made by a surrogate (Swigart, Lidz, Butterworth, & Arnold, 1996). For the marginalized populations of lesbian, gay men, bisexual, and transgender persons (LGBT), decisions are especially difficult, compounded by issues of discrimination, lack of legal support, level of relationship commitment,, and complicated disclosure to family and medical professionals (Riggle, Rostosky, Prather, & Hamrin, 2005). Limited research has been presented regarding environmental and social factors that impact the choice of a …

From A Bird's Eye View: Using Satellite Imagery To Map And Analyze The Forest Islands Of The Llanos De Mojos, Bolivia, Stephanie Boothby

HIM 1990-2015

Recent discoveries about pre-Columbian societies in the Amazon have revolutionized the way researchers think about the environment, and the degree of interaction that humans have with their surroundings. New evidence indicates that ancient Amazonian populations were not only much larger and more complex than previously thought, but they were also modifying their environment and creating artificial landscapes. Although information about pre-Columbian cultures can be gained from archaeological excavations and historical accounts, the advent of new technology allows archaeologists to conduct research remotely.

Earthworks were constructed by pre-Hispanic peoples to create higher ground for occupation and agriculture, as an adaptation to …

Recommendation For The Prevention Of Nursing Burnout, Lindsey N. Kimmerling Jan 2010

Recommendation For The Prevention Of Nursing Burnout, Lindsey N. Kimmerling

HIM 1990-2015

Burnout is a bio-psychosocial response related to chronic stress in the work environment (Hertel, 2009). In nursing, burnout can affect the work environment, coworker relationships, and patient care. It can lead to patient dissatisfaction, nurse dissatisfaction and even patient harm. With the nursing shortage predicted to increase to over 1,000,000 by the year 2012, it is of vital importance that methods to reduce and prevent burnout be researched and implemented in order to retain nurses and ensure the delivery of safe and effective care. The purpose of this literature review was to determine what knowledge base already existed about the …

Stress Concentration Factors For V-Notched Plates Under Axisymmetric Pressure, Nathan J. Mutter Jan 2010

Stress Concentration Factors For V-Notched Plates Under Axisymmetric Pressure, Nathan J. Mutter

HIM 1990-2015

The topic of this thesis is the investigation of the local states of stress resulting from the introduction of av-notch in a coaxial circle on the pressurized surface of a circumferentially clamped plate subject to axisymmetric loading. The understanding of the fracture behavior of a component experiencing such a condition is of particular interest to the aerospace and defense industries where circular plate components are often utilized. In such applications, it is imperative that the designer be able to predict the loading conditions facilitating dynamic fracture. As a step towards solving such problems, the quasi-static analogy is studied. Specifically, the …

Multi-Pole Permanent Magnet Motor Design And Control For High Performance Electromechanical Actuation In All Electric Aircraft, Jared C. Bindl Jan 2010

Multi-Pole Permanent Magnet Motor Design And Control For High Performance Electromechanical Actuation In All Electric Aircraft, Jared C. Bindl

HIM 1990-2015

The evolution of aircraft has led into a large increase in the demand for electrically integrated subsystems. Part of this demand is the transformation of a centralized hydraulic systems to independently operated electrical subsystems. The result of this overhaul will decrease aircraft weight, increase reliability, reduce aircraft lifetime maintenance and cost, and help to increase the control of power distribution. This thesis proposes the design methodology of a multi-pole permanent magnet (PM) motor with a capability to operate at high temperature. High temperature capability is one of the key requirements to implement electromechanical actuation for aircraft flight control, replace hydraulic …

Parallel Adolescents, Tricia Windowmaker Jan 2010

Parallel Adolescents, Tricia Windowmaker

HIM 1990-2015

The general intent of my thesis is to write two novellas that show the differences in ways of life in two completely dissimilar states, and the conflicts that occurred therein. Therefore, the novellas will include a variation in gender, setting, and conflict. The main characters will be roughly the same age, but I will explore how the setting they live in has affected conflicts they have to deal with. I will explore writing these two novellas in the category of young adult fiction, as well as, first person narration for a close psychic distance.

Acquisition And Transference Of Physics-Based Conceptual Knowledge: An Analysis Of Fourth-Grade Student's Ability, Ashton Dacus

HIM 1990-2015

Distressingly, at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, 53% of fifth-grade students scored the equivalence of a D or lower on Florida's standardized science assessment (NCLB School District and State Public Accountability Report, 2009). One possible way to adapt methods of science education that is becoming more popular is through the use of computer games, as numerous studies have shown positive correlations between the use of computer games and increased learning gains in science.

This thesis not only discusses previous researc concerning computer games as tools for science education but it also provides a description and the results of …
