Performance Of Four Near Zero Energy Homes: Lessons Learned, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carlos Colon
Performance Of Four Near Zero Energy Homes: Lessons Learned, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carlos Colon
FSEC Energy Research Center®
While the idea of a zero or near zero energy home is well understood, the actual performance of the structure can be different than expected. High performance homes necessitate increasingly complex envelope, HVAC, water heating, and appliance systems, and successful designs rely on proper function and feedback from those systems to achieve low-energy goals. This paper presents measured data on four near zero energy homes located in Florida that are a part of the U.S. DOE Building America program. The monitored data are compared to both a benchmark model and the prototype computer simulations. By examining the submetered energy data, …
Excitation Band-Gap Tuning Of Dopant Based Quantum Dots With Core-Inner Shell-Outer Shell Div, Swadeshmukul Santra, Soumitra Kar
Excitation Band-Gap Tuning Of Dopant Based Quantum Dots With Core-Inner Shell-Outer Shell Div, Swadeshmukul Santra, Soumitra Kar
UCF Patents
A composition and method for fabricating and tuning a dopant based core-shell semiconductor having a quantum dot core with an excitation band-gap are provided. A quantum dot core composed of an alloy of cadmium sulfide (CdS) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) as semi-conductor materials include a dopant of manganese (Mn) added to the core and an outer shell of zine sulfide (ZnS). The dopant based core/shell quantum dot semiconductor of the present invention allows the fine tuning of an excitation band-gap, covering a wide range (from 2.4 eV to ~4 eV). When doped with Mn, these alloy Qdots emit bright yellow/orange …

In one embodiment a communications system includes an RF receiver that receives a desired signal and the interference signal, a first phase modulator that receives the desired signal and the interference signal from the RF receiver and generates a resulting optical signal, a second phase modulator that generates a modulated optical signal relative to an inverse interference signal and transmits the modulated optical signal to the first phase modulator, and a detector that receives the resulting optical signal from the first phase modulator and detects the desired signal, wherein the resulting optical signal comprises a modulated optical signal generated by …
Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Using Separate Transmissive And Reflective Liquid Crystal Cells And Materials With Single Cell Gap, Shin-Tson Wu, Qi Hong, Yung-Hsun Wu
Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Using Separate Transmissive And Reflective Liquid Crystal Cells And Materials With Single Cell Gap, Shin-Tson Wu, Qi Hong, Yung-Hsun Wu
UCF Patents
A transflective liquid crystal display (TLCD) using separate transmissive (T) and reflective (R) cells in which two liquid crystal materials with different birefringence changes are used. The birefringence change of the R region is half of the birefringence change of the T region. In this case, a single cell gap is possible and identical transmittance and reflectance for R and T is obtained. It is applicable to various reflective LC modes, and the fabrication methods are simple.

FSEC Energy Research Center®
The weatherization training for the State of Florida Dept of Community Affairs continues at the Florida Solar Energy Center's Training Facility. Progress for the sixth three months of the contract included a five day classroom training on October 18-22 (17 students) and in-field evaluations (16 students).
High Efficiency Solar Powered Fans, Danny Parker, Bart Hibbs
High Efficiency Solar Powered Fans, Danny Parker, Bart Hibbs
UCF Patents
Highly efficient solar fans used in portable and built in configurations. A ventilation fan can be used for exhausting air out from underneath roofs, and/or for being portable in use and application. The fan can include optimized airflow blades having a twisted configuration that can move at a rotational speed operation of up to approximately 500 rpm. The approximately 15 inch diameter twisted blades can be pre-milded on a hub that together form a single molded unit of plastic. They can also be fabricated using metal. The unit can be mounted in an exhaust outlet having a conical diffuser on …
Image Reconstruction For A General Circle-Plus Trajectory, Alexander Katsevich
Image Reconstruction For A General Circle-Plus Trajectory, Alexander Katsevich
UCF Patents
Methods, apparatus and systems for an exact filtered back projection process for circle-plus trajectories, which consist of two components: C and L. The first component C, is analogous to a circle in the traditional circle-plus trajectories, is any closed (not necessarily planar) continuous curve. The second component L is almost any continuous curve. The only condition is that L starts below C and ends above C. The process does not depend on the global properties of L. When the source is located on L, one needs to know only how C projects onto the corresponding detector and the properties of …
Lightweight Portable Training Device To Simulate Kayaking, Ronald Eaglin
Lightweight Portable Training Device To Simulate Kayaking, Ronald Eaglin
UCF Patents
Methods and devices for kayak training and/or exercising. One embodiment can use two PVC type pipes (one shorter than the other) in a parallel configuration. A flexible bungee type stretchable cord can be passed through the small pipe and have ends that are each attempted to opposite ends of the larger pipe. Ends of another stretchable cord are each fixable attached to ends of the small pipe with a mid portion of the second bungee cord attached to a fixably nonmoveable member such as a door knob and the like. A user sitting down can grip the larger pipe with …
Method And System To Attach Carbon Nanotube Probe To Scanning Probe Microscopy Tips, Lee Chow, Guang Chai
Method And System To Attach Carbon Nanotube Probe To Scanning Probe Microscopy Tips, Lee Chow, Guang Chai
UCF Patents
An easy and controllable method and system to attach a carbon nanotube to a scanning probe tip such as a scanning probe microscopy (SPM) tip using a focus ion beam (FIB) technique. The method and system includes selecting a carbon fiber by a Focus Ion Beam micromanipulator, picking up the carbon fiber with the nanotube tip, forming a slot on an SPM tip, and inserting the carbon fiber with the nanotube tip into the slot.
