Comparative Histology Of The Respiratory Tract Of Normal Peromyscus Floridanus And P. Gossypinus And Effects Of Exposure To Solid Rocket Motor Fuel Exhaust On P. Gossypinus, Terry Lee Bitner Jan 1977

Comparative Histology Of The Respiratory Tract Of Normal Peromyscus Floridanus And P. Gossypinus And Effects Of Exposure To Solid Rocket Motor Fuel Exhaust On P. Gossypinus, Terry Lee Bitner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Microscopic examination of the tracheal dimensions of normal Florida mice (Peromyscus floridanus) and cotton mice (P. gossypinus) showed no significant differences between the two species, but external examination showed the tracheal length of the Florida mouse to be longer than that of the cotton mouse. Microscopic examination of the intrapulmonary apparatus (bronchioles, alveolar ducts, atria, and alveoli) of normal Florida and cotton mice showed no significant differences in measurements between the two species. Cotton mice were exposed to exhaust gases produced by the burning of solid rocket motor (SRM) fuel. Mice exposed once for a duration of 10 min demonstrated …

The Liquid Phase Conversion Of Carbon Dioxide To Hydrocarbons Over Ruthenium Catalyst Systems, Mohammad M. Akbarnejad Jan 1977

The Liquid Phase Conversion Of Carbon Dioxide To Hydrocarbons Over Ruthenium Catalyst Systems, Mohammad M. Akbarnejad

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the feasibility of producing hydrocarbons by liquid phase hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. Initial studies dealt with the evaluation of ruthenium (III) chloride over a wide range of reaction conditions. High conversions were observed and were found to vary with catalyst concentration, temperature and time. Conversion of carbon dioxide reached 73% after twenty-four hours at a catalyst concentration of 0.75g/mole of CO2 feed. The hydrogen to carbon dioxide ratio was found to have a significant effect on product distribution and amount of methane produced. For example, low ratios of H2/CO2 gave large …

Hardware And Software Considerations For Improving The Throughput Of Scientific Computation Computers, Glenn Allen Sullivan Jan 1977

Hardware And Software Considerations For Improving The Throughput Of Scientific Computation Computers, Glenn Allen Sullivan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, hardware and software techniques are presented for improving the Throughput (defined as computations per dollar) of computing systems which are oriented towards high-precision floating point computations. The various improvements are referenced to a baseline of the PDP 11/20, the NOVA 1200, and the TI 960A, all 16 bit minicomputers. The most beneficial hardware improvement is the inclusion of a Floating Point Processor, which yields up to 200X Throughput increase over a software floating point package. The inclusion of a cache high speed local memory and the availability of Polish Notation format instructions are shown to provide less …

A Review Of Municipal Services Provided By The City Of Lakeland, Roberto Ignacio Pedroso Jan 1977

A Review Of Municipal Services Provided By The City Of Lakeland, Roberto Ignacio Pedroso

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

For this report, four municipal services provided by the City of Lakeland were studied. The environmental impact of these services was discussed. Recommendations were made for solutions to problems found. It was found that the water supply services has on deleterious impact on the environment. Hydrogen sulfide occasionally found in the water supply gives the latter objectionable odor and taste. Installation of a centralized water treatment plant with aeration facilities for hydrogen sulfide removal was recommended for resolution of the problem. The waste water treatment plant removes 91% of the BOD5 and the suspended solids in the plant influent. The …

Selection Considerations For A Servovalve, Frank J. Niemas Jr. Jan 1977

Selection Considerations For A Servovalve, Frank J. Niemas Jr.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Servovalves are a key factor in determining the performance characteristics of an electrohydraulic position servo. This paper examines the interrelationships between servovalve parameters and system requirements. A brief description of the configuration and operation of a typical servovalve is presented. Key servovalve parameters are identified, defined, and discussed. System performance considerations are identified, and the interrelationships between system requirements and servovalve parameters are examined. Examples of servovalve parameters for missile, aircraft and industrial systems are given to illustrate the effect of system requirements on a servovalve. Finally, general guide-lines for selecting and specifying servovalve parameters are given.

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos Jan 1977

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Milk protein has been implicated as a factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Significantly higher titers of antibodies (P < 0.0002) toward milk antigens were observed in patients suffering from coronary heart disease as compared to age matched controls. These hemagglutination titers were not sex related but may have been related to age. Specificity of the antigen-antibody reaction was demonstrated by a hemagglutination inhibition test. The complement fixation test was evaluated and was less sensitive than the tanned hemaggIutination test. Treatment with 2-mercapto-ethanol resulted in reduced hemagglutination titers, indicating that significant antibody activity may be due to IgM. A special application of the Combs test detected specific antibodies on the surface of tanned and coated RBC which did not otherwise produce detectable agglutination.

Aging Characteristics Of Al-4.5% Cu-1.4% Mg-0.5% Ag, James Kelly White Jan 1977

Aging Characteristics Of Al-4.5% Cu-1.4% Mg-0.5% Ag, James Kelly White

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an A1-4.5%Cu-1.4%Mg- 0.5%Ag alloy have been investigated. Results showed that a maximum ultimate tensile strength of 75 ksi can be attained by single-step aging 24 hr at 170°C. The two-step aging treatments consisting of first aging one week at 80°C followed by aging at 160° and 190°C led to lower strength properties than simple one-step aging. Reversion treatments applied to fully age-hardened alloy resulted in an almost progressive loss of strength in the 250° to 375° range.

The Liquid Phase Oxidation Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Carl B. Reaves Jan 1977

The Liquid Phase Oxidation Of 1,3-Pentadiene, Carl B. Reaves

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The liquid phase autoxidation of 1,3-pentadiene to 2,4-pentadienoic acid utilizing gaseous oxygen at atmospheric pressure was investigated as a possible route for direct utilization of piperylene obtained during the cracking of naptha to ethylene. Catalyst system consisting of cobalt, manganese, and iron salts promoted by sodium, potassium and hydrogen bromides, were used under a variety of condition of catalyst concentration, temperature, oxygen flow and piperylene purity. Under all conditions studied, a large number of oxidation products were formed. Maximum yields of 2,4-pentadienoic acid were obtained using a cobalt acetate bromide catalyst at 85°C.
