High Pressure Hydraulic Supply System Model, William H. Mock Jan 1977

High Pressure Hydraulic Supply System Model, William H. Mock

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A mathematical model is derived to provide quasi-steady state predictions of the performance of a high pressure hydraulic supply system, using equations which govern the physical processes as opposed to equations which match input-output characteristics. Model equations are developed to describe the operation of the power source, control valves, energy source, gas side of the system, hydraulic accumulator, the motorpump, and hydraulic side of the system. The accuracy of the model is then checked by inserting known parameters from a previously developed control system and comparing model predictions with performance data from this system.

Selection Considerations For A Servovalve, Frank J. Niemas Jr. Jan 1977

Selection Considerations For A Servovalve, Frank J. Niemas Jr.

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Servovalves are a key factor in determining the performance characteristics of an electrohydraulic position servo. This paper examines the interrelationships between servovalve parameters and system requirements. A brief description of the configuration and operation of a typical servovalve is presented. Key servovalve parameters are identified, defined, and discussed. System performance considerations are identified, and the interrelationships between system requirements and servovalve parameters are examined. Examples of servovalve parameters for missile, aircraft and industrial systems are given to illustrate the effect of system requirements on a servovalve. Finally, general guide-lines for selecting and specifying servovalve parameters are given.

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos Jan 1977

Antibodies To Milk Antigens In Human Coronary Heart Disease, Efstathios Spinos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Milk protein has been implicated as a factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Significantly higher titers of antibodies (P < 0.0002) toward milk antigens were observed in patients suffering from coronary heart disease as compared to age matched controls. These hemagglutination titers were not sex related but may have been related to age. Specificity of the antigen-antibody reaction was demonstrated by a hemagglutination inhibition test. The complement fixation test was evaluated and was less sensitive than the tanned hemaggIutination test. Treatment with 2-mercapto-ethanol resulted in reduced hemagglutination titers, indicating that significant antibody activity may be due to IgM. A special application of the Combs test detected specific antibodies on the surface of tanned and coated RBC which did not otherwise produce detectable agglutination.

Dialysed activated sludge was used as a substrate to test for enzymes which can hydrolyse activated sludge floc. Two hundred and fifty aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms were tested against activated sludge for the presence of hydrolytic enzymes. These included known genera and organisms obtained by various enrichment procedures. Anaerobic digester mixed liquor was contacted with activated sludge agar under anaerobic conditions. None of the microorganisms present in the digester liquor hydrolysed the floc. The following commercial enzymes were contacted with activated sludge singly, in combination, and sequentially under various physical and chemical conditions: protease, lipase, cellulose, pectinase, phospholipase C, trypsin, …

Aging Characteristics Of Al-4.5% Cu-1.4% Mg-0.5% Ag, James Kelly White Jan 1977

Aging Characteristics Of Al-4.5% Cu-1.4% Mg-0.5% Ag, James Kelly White

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an A1-4.5%Cu-1.4%Mg- 0.5%Ag alloy have been investigated. Results showed that a maximum ultimate tensile strength of 75 ksi can be attained by single-step aging 24 hr at 170°C. The two-step aging treatments consisting of first aging one week at 80°C followed by aging at 160° and 190°C led to lower strength properties than simple one-step aging. Reversion treatments applied to fully age-hardened alloy resulted in an almost progressive loss of strength in the 250° to 375° range.

A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess Jan 1977

A Comparative Study Of Aldehyde Oxidase From Tumorous-Head And Oregon-R-C Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Richard A. Respess

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Aldehyde oxidase has been partially purified from Oregon-R-C and tuh(ASU) strains of Drosophila melanogaster using an affinity technique. The two enzymes were subjected to a partial kinetic analysis and found to be very similar to one another. This indicated the problem of elevated aldehyde oxidase activity in tuh(ASU) at key developmental stages (Kuhn and Cunningham, 1976) is due to an abnormal regulation. A comparative isozyme study through the developmental stages showed no major differences between the enzymes indirectly supporting the idea of an abnormal regulation. A comparison of tuh(ASU) with four wild-type strains indicated it may be a fourth allozyme …

Distributed Computing Systems: An Overview, Haim Schwarzkopf Jan 1977

Distributed Computing Systems: An Overview, Haim Schwarzkopf

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Associative processors, parallel processors, content addressable parallel processors, networks, and other architectures have been around the computing scene as "Distributed Processing", for some time now. Several hundred papers have been written discussing their use and design but so far no academic work has tried to summarize the field called "Distributed Processing" using a systems approach. This research report attempts to remedy this lack. It attempts to gather into one place information that existed as of late 1976 in a format easily understandable by managers and systems engineers. The report deals also with certain issues of centralization and decentralization of EDP …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The pollutant transport from watershed to receiving waters is modeled for Spruce Creek basin. The data requirements for such a model are: daily rainfall; monthly lake evaporation; soil and land use breakdown; water quality history for the main indicators, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended solids, and total organic carbon; surface flow and interflow delay coefficients; channel flow time; daily flow gage records; and channel flow characteristics. The model uses the SCS runoff curve number method to generate rainfall excess where the antecedent conditions are varied daily by a water budget analysis. The direct runoff is delayed and routed by the …

Eye Color And Its Possible Relation To Behavior, Debra Lee Hollister Jan 1977

Eye Color And Its Possible Relation To Behavior, Debra Lee Hollister

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A variable that is capable of indicating one's cognitive and motor capacities has been the dream of many researchers. Until recently however, no researcher has seriously considered an independent variable that is obvious among all people regardless of race or culture. This variable is eye color. This paper is a review of the experimental literature in this field and covers many areas including sociability, perception, learning, athletic abilities, and a few medical anomalies. Several alternative hypotheses are also offered as reasons for the obtained correlations. These ideas include culture, learning, and environment. Two other hypotheses are also presented to explain …

An Organizational Communication Analysis Of A Medium-Sized Newspaper, Sara Baldwin Howze Jan 1977

An Organizational Communication Analysis Of A Medium-Sized Newspaper, Sara Baldwin Howze

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A medium-size newspaper in Central Florida was observed for 8 weeks in the Spring and Summer of 1976 and 58 employees interviewed to determine internal communication patterns and measure attitudes toward the communication system, organization and job related variables. A system theory of organizations provided basic theoretical assumptions. Since communication activities occur within the framework of internal organization elements such as structure, objectives, leadership style, reward system, technology, intergroup relations, and individual employee characteristics, those elements were described. Communication activities were reported in terms of message purpose, network traversed, method of diffusion and relationships. Findings indicated that the nature and …

Finite Element Analysis Of Cylindrical Inclusions, Thomas L. Wade Jan 1977

Finite Element Analysis Of Cylindrical Inclusions, Thomas L. Wade

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a parametric study of the stresses in a matrix near a cylindrical inclusion. The Texas Grain Analysis Program (TEXGAP), a finite element approach, is used to model the problem. Eight different models are investigated which establish the stress effects of varying interlayer thickness, varying modulus of elasticity of inclusions and interlayers, and element size. The results, presented as plots of axial stresses, show a definite lowering of the stress in the area of inclusion termination as the interlayer thickness is increased from zero. A further stress decrease is noted with the addition of some inclusion elasticity. Similarly, …

Quantitative Analysis Of Thin Films By Dc Arc Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Arnold W. Hogrefe Jan 1977

Quantitative Analysis Of Thin Films By Dc Arc Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Arnold W. Hogrefe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The use of DC arc optical emission spectroscopy (OES) for quantitative analysis of thin films deposited on graphite electrodes was investigated as a process control tool. Three binary systems were evaluated: nickel-chromium, phosphorous-silicon, and silicon-aluminum. Sampling by direct deposition onto graphite electrodes placed in the deposition chamber with product runs proved to be a rapid, representative, and non-disruptive technique. Standard electrodes were prepared for each system either by evaporation of solutions of known concentration onto the tips of electrodes or by weighing out powdered standards of the appropriate concentrations. Standard curves were then prepared by burning multiple sets of standard …

A nematic liquid crystal cell is used in conjunction with a mirror retro-reflector to modulate a low-power laser beam. The object is to determine the feasibility of the combination in transmitting information from a remote sensor without a large energy source at that sensor. Analog modulation does not appear workable, but a digitally-encoded scheme is feasible.

Behavior Modification Of Depression: A Review Of Theories And Research, Maria Cristina Lema De Cardozo Jan 1977

Behavior Modification Of Depression: A Review Of Theories And Research, Maria Cristina Lema De Cardozo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to find effective ways to treat depression, due to its high incidence and to the severity of its consequences. The first psychological treatment of depression came with the advent of psychoanalysis, but today the theories dealing with the etiology and treatment of depression range from genetic and biological approaches to an existential conceptualization. While briefly reviewing these various current approaches, the primary purpose of this paper is to present the behavioral/social learning approach to the understanding and treatment of depression. The specific theoretical formulations, methods of assessment and treatment approaches characteristic of the behavioral/social learning approach …

Removal Of Hydrogen Sulfide From Ground Water In Central Florida, Thomas G. Lochrane Jan 1977

Removal Of Hydrogen Sulfide From Ground Water In Central Florida, Thomas G. Lochrane

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The presence of hydrogen sulfide in a ground water source is noted by its rather obnoxious odor, similar to a "rotten egg". Concentrations as low as 0.05 ppm are noticeable, therefore, almost its entire removal is demanded prior to potable consumption. Hydrogen sulfide is formed primarily by the decomposition of organic matter in anaerobic conditions. Removal of this gas has been accomplished by means of aeration, detention, and chlorination over the years. The mechanisms behind each of these processes are complex and discussed in this paper. During the course of this investigation, a literature survey concerning the mature and sources …

Modeling The Silicon Solar Cell As An Optical Detector, Leo Albert Mallette Jan 1977

Modeling The Silicon Solar Cell As An Optical Detector, Leo Albert Mallette

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Solar cells have traditionally been used for a direct sunlight to energy conversion, and there has been relatively little investigation into their use as a low data rate optical detector. This report summarizes the results of experimental work to model a silicon solar cell, and its response to a pulse of light. A lumped circuit model, and governing equations for each of the elements is developed. Experimental data on several cells are used to curve fit the governing equations. The parameters of interest are tested as a function of both temperature, and background illumination. Having derived a working model, using …
