Everyone now knows what the "BS" in the "BCS" stands for but there seems to be some doubt remaining about the "C." Some suggest "computer," some say "compound," some say it is a redundant statement of the "S." Whatever it is, several other things are now clear.

Apparatus And Method For Photocatalytic Conditioning Of Flue Gas Fly-Ash Particles, Ali Raissi, Nazim Muradov, Peter Peng
Apparatus And Method For Photocatalytic Conditioning Of Flue Gas Fly-Ash Particles, Ali Raissi, Nazim Muradov, Peter Peng
UCF Patents
A process for the in-situ transformation of chemical species present in the flue gas to form sulfur trioxide, wherein the fly-ash particles are conditioned by altering their surface electrical properties. More specifically, the subject invention is concerned with fly ash conditioning using plural lamps located at specific positions in a specific arrangements most advantageous to the chemical conversion that would take place. The novel invention conditions flue gas emissions by treating the flue gas with SO.sub.3, where the SO.sub.3 is generated in the flue gas by photocatalytic conversion of SO.sub.2 using selectively spaced and arranged ultra violet light emitting lamps …

Method Of Time-Resolving Fourier-Transform Spectroscopy To Allow Interferogram Sampling At Unevenly Spaced Path Length Differences, Robert Peale, Henry Weidner
UCF Patents
A low cost method of adding time-resolving capability to commercial Fourier-transform spectrometers with a continuously scanning Michelson interferometer. This invention is specifically designed to eliminate noise and artifacts caused by mirror-speed variations in the interferometer. The method exists as two parts: 1) a novel timing scheme for synchronizing the transient events under study with the digitizing by an analog-to-digital converter, and 2) a mathematical algorithm for extracting the spectral information from the recorded data. The novel timing scheme is a modification of the well known interleaved, or stroboscopic, method. It achieves the same timing accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, and freedom from …

There have been headlines over the past week about crime statistics from the National Football League. Jeff Benedict and Don Yaeger in their new book, Pros and Cons: The Criminals Who Play in the NFL, claim that one in five (21%) of all the players in the NFL have been charged with at least one serious crime. Among these are two murders, seven rape charges, 45 counts of domestic violence and 42 charges of assault. What is worse, say Yaeger and Benedict, the National Football League continues to employ these kinds of people at huge salaries and the NFL seems …

Face Detection Using Templates, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Ho Kwon
UCF Patents
Disclosed is a two step process for automatically finding a human face in an electronically digitized image (for example, taken by handheld digital cameras and digital video-cameras such as cam-corders), and for confirming the existence of the face by examining facial features. Step 1 is to detect the human face and is accomplished in stages that include enhancing the digital image with a blurring filter and edge enhancer in order to better set forth the unique facial features such as wrinkles, and curved shapes of a facial image. After prefiltering, preselected curves sometimes referred to as snakelets are dropped on …

Field Evaluation Of Efficient Building Technology With Photovoltaic Power Production In New Florida Residential Housing, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
FSEC Energy Research Center®
The objective of the project, sponsored by the Florida Energy Office and Sandia National Laboratories, is to test the feasibility of building very efficient residential buildings that when combined with utility-interactive PV power, exert little net demand on the utility during the summer peak demand period.
Two single family homes - one, a super efficient residence with a utility interactive photovoltaic (PV) system, and another, a control home - have been constructed in Lakeland, Florida. The PV residence, or PVRES, was constructed with many measures designed to make it more efficient (Fig.E-1). These include a white tile reflective roof system, …

The intercollegiate athletic forces are at it again and as usual the action comes from the king of college sport, football. At Auburn, one of the NCAA's more problematic programs, Terry Bowden is gone as the head football coach of Auburn's beloved Tigers. As we have come to expect there is nothing simple about the disappearance of a head coach in the heartland of college football.
