Lobbying To Lawsuits : Optimistic Biases And Tactical Transitions In The Movement For Lgbt Equality, Katherine Zuber

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This research examines the question of strategic choice in the context of the gay and lesbian rights movement. Although social movements often combine legislative, electoral and legal strategies to effect change, systematic legal efforts on behalf of gay rights did not emerge until well after a concerted lobbying and legislative campaign arose. Why did a politically powerless group seeking rights turn to litigation much later than we might have expected? A targeted case study of gay activism in Boston confirms that political opportunity is an important external factor that shapes strategic choice. However, the impact of these structural factors is …

Rossby Wave Breaking And Widespread Extreme Precipitation Events In The Central And Eastern U.S, Benjamin John Moore Jan 2017

Rossby Wave Breaking And Widespread Extreme Precipitation Events In The Central And Eastern U.S, Benjamin John Moore

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation examines climatological and dynamical linkages between widespread extreme precipitation events (EPEs) in the central and eastern U.S. and Rossby wave breaking (RWB), and assesses forecast skill for EPEs occurring in conjunction with RWB. The analysis primarily focuses on linkages of EPEs to LC1 (anticyclonic) and LC2 (cyclonic) RWB.

The Preparation And Characterization Of Tetrafluoro-Lambda~6~-Sulfanes, Linbin Zhong Jan 2017

The Preparation And Characterization Of Tetrafluoro-Lambda~6~-Sulfanes, Linbin Zhong

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Synthetic access to systematically substituted tetrafluoro-λ6-sulfanes was challenging and the research in this area had been largely abandoned. The original reports of disubstituted-tetrafluoro-λ6-sulfanes were limited to substitution by diphenyl and dialkyl groups. The dialkyl-tetrafluoro-λ6-sulfanes were reactive while the diphenyl substituted compounds showed decreased reactivity. In this dissertation, the systematic substitution on tetrafluoro-λ6-sulfanes has enabled the studies of the substitution effects on reactivity.

Technological advances have created new avenues for the perpetration of sexual violence. The widespread availability of cameras has made it easier to take covert recordings of an individual’s intimate body parts, and whether sexually explicit images are recorded with or without an individual’s consent, growing access to the Internet has facilitated the nonconsensual dissemination of those images. Yet criminal laws have not kept pace with technology in most jurisdictions across the United States, and victims of nonconsensual pornography typically have no avenue by which to seek justice. There have been efforts to reform laws in a variety of jurisdictions, some …
