Smuggler Comes To Maine, Clark P. Thompson
Smuggler Comes To Maine, Clark P. Thompson
Maine History Documents
On September 7, 1876, the Lewiston Evening Journal reported that Colonel Henry S. Russell of Milton, Massachusetts, was bringing the race horse known as Smuggler to Maine, being "desirous of showing his famous stallion to the people and breeders of Maine." The horse arrived in Bangor, Maine, on Tuesday, September 19 and competed in events the following Saturday and Monday.

Lexen: Role Of Atmospheric Trace Gases In Microbial Colonization And Succession On Recent Lava Flows, Gary M. King
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Drs. Gary M. King of the University of Maine and Klaus Nusslein of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst have been awarded a grant from the NSF Life in Extreme Environment (LExEn) program to determine the role of atmospheric trace gases in microbial colonization and succession on recent lava flows. Volcanic activity has played an important role in the development of terrestrial ecosystems for much of Earth's history, and continues to shape terrestrial environments at present. Deposition of lava and tephra result in surfaces that over time support complex, highly productive biological communities. However, young or recently extruded lavas represent extreme environments …

Collaborative Research: Developing Methods To Study Age-Related Changes In The Physiology Of Forest Trees, Michael S. Greenwood
Collaborative Research: Developing Methods To Study Age-Related Changes In The Physiology Of Forest Trees, Michael S. Greenwood
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Trees continue to increase in size and complexity over life spans that may last many centuries, and each year the growing regions of their shoots produce new foliage and reproductive structures. As they grow older and larger, forest trees appear to grow more slowly, produce thicker foliage and more reproductive structures. These changes are likely to be associated with age-related declines in the growth rates of forest stands, which occur before the mid-point of the lifespan of important timber species. Although similar patterns of age- and size-related change in the morphology and physiology of foliage have been described for numerous …

B850: Representative Farm Budgets And Performance Indicators For Integrated Farming Practices In Maine, Aaron K. Hoshide, Timothy J. Dalton, Stewart N. Smith
Bulletins
This report compares the relative profitability and sustainability of Maine farms integrating crops and livestock with comparable non-integrated or conventional farms. Potato and dairy systems coupled for only two years had greater profitability compared to conventional systems. Profitability increased in the short term in two ways. First, potato farms grew more of their primary cash crop. Second, dairy farms expanded cow numbers, increasing profitability assuming increasing returns to scale. Coupled systems integrated for more than ten years (long term) had more favorable profitability and sustainability measures than short-term couplers since greater manure-nutrient credits were taken for potatoes and silage corn. …

General University of Maine Publications
One would think that after winning 50 games and two regular season conference crowns during the last two seasons, the University of Maine women’s basketball team would be ready for a break. Maybe the team would be content to look back at past achievements.
Perhaps the Black Bears need a rest after a successful campaign in which they won the America East Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Or possibly, Maine might think its goals and expectations are lowered after losing two-time America East Player of the Year Heather Ernest.

Cmg Training In Spatio-Temporal Statistical Analysis Of Multi-Platform Ocean Optical Observations, Mary Jane Perry
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
This project will be a five-week summer school on the topic of spatio-temporal statistical analysis and its application to multi-platform, multi-sensor bio-optical oceanic data. The summer school seeks to address some of the analysis challenges anticipated as the Integrated Ocean Observing System is established. These are associated with the very diverse range of spatial and temporal sampling afforded by the different components of such a system and contemporaneous process experiments. Statistical experts in spatial information engineering with experience in collaboration with ocean scientists will discuss some of the modern tools for statistical analysis of such data and associated challenges, while …

2004-2005 Swimming And Diving Media Guide, Umaine Athletic Media Relations Office
General University of Maine Publications
The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are prepared to continue the improvements made last season in the 2004-2005 season. Head Coach Jeff Wren begins his 34th overall season at Maine and is joined by assistant coach Susan Lizzotte and diving coach Jaret Lizzotte. Though the team lost some of its top competitors to graduation, the Black Bears will seek to build on a core group of talented and experienced returners, with the addition of a strong group of first-year swimmers and divers, to battle some tough America East opponents.

Physical-Biological Oceanographic Coupling Influencing Phytoplankton And Primary Production In The South China Sea, X. Ning, Fei Chai, Huijie Xue, Y. Cai, C. Liu, J. Shi
Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Two cruises were carried out in the summer and winter of 1998 to study coupled physical-chemical-biological processes in the South China Sea and their effects on phytoplankton stock and production. The results clearly show that the seasonal distributions of phytoplankton were closely related to the coupled processes driven by the East Asian Monsoon. Summer southwesterly monsoon induced upwelling along the China and Vietnam coasts. Several mesoscale cyclonic cold eddies and anticyclonic warm pools were identified in both seasons. In the summer, the upwelling and cold eddies, both associated with rich nutrients, low dissolved oxygen ( DO), high chlorophyll a (Chl …
Old Drew, Clark P. Thompson
Old Drew, Clark P. Thompson
Maine History Documents
In the early 1800s Maine was known for producing excellent trotting horses. These horses helped to establish a unique American breed of horse that became known as "Standardbred". In 1842 a colt was foaled in Exeter, Maine, that would become a foundation sire of trotting horses in Maine and beyond. The horse, owned by Hiram Drew, was known as "the Drew horse" or "Old Drew." This article provides a short history related to the horse, his owners, and trotting horse breeding in Maine.

Modeling The Spectral Shape Of Absorption By Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, Michael S. Twardowski, Emmanuel Boss, James M. Sullivan, Percy L. Donaghay
Modeling The Spectral Shape Of Absorption By Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, Michael S. Twardowski, Emmanuel Boss, James M. Sullivan, Percy L. Donaghay
Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
A single exponential model of the form ag(λ)∝e -seλ was evaluated in the context of its application and interpretation in describing absorption by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), ag, as a function of wavelength, λ. The spectral slope, se, is often used as a proxy for CDOM composition, including the ratio of fulvic to humic acids and molecular weight. About three-quarters of the variability in se values from the literature could be explained by the different spectral ranges used in each study. Dependency on different spectral ranges resulted from the relatively weak performance of the single exponential as a descriptor …

Since approximately 5200 cal yrs BP, five sets of eight to nine beach ridges were built and preserved along the northwestern Peruvian coastal desert (3o30'S-9oS). Potential ridge-building mechanisms in the hyper-arid environment of northwest Peru include El Nifio floods and storms, seismic activity, and sea-level change, as well as more gradualc limate changes that affectedc oastal morphologyI. mage processinga nd GeographicI nformationS ystem (GIS) methods were used to analyze aerial photographs and measure historic coastal patterns along three beach-ridge plains over a 37-year time period. Coastal features were digitized from image mosaics of each ridge plain at different time intervals …
