Periodic Response-Reinforcer Contiguity: Temporal Control But Not As We Know It!, Michael Keenan Jan 1999

Periodic Response-Reinforcer Contiguity: Temporal Control But Not As We Know It!, Michael Keenan

The Psychological Record

Two experiments using rats show the effects of introducing response-reinforcer contiguity on a modified recycling conjunctive fixed-time 30 s fixed-ratio 1 schedule of food reinforcement. In Experiment 1, the frequency of programmed contiguity was varied across conditions. The general finding was an increase in overall rate of responding for all rats when the incidence of obtained contiguity was relatively high. This increase in responding was accompanied by unusual response patterns for some rats. These patterns persisted when the rats were subsequently exposed to a fixed-interval schedule. Other rats produced fixed-interval-like performance when the incidence of obtained contiguity increased. Similar findings …

Decrease Of Precurrent Behavior As Training Increases: Effects Of Task Complexity, Jorge M. Oliveira-Castro, Domingos S. Coelho, Gardênia A. Oliveira-Castro Jan 1999

Decrease Of Precurrent Behavior As Training Increases: Effects Of Task Complexity, Jorge M. Oliveira-Castro, Domingos S. Coelho, Gardênia A. Oliveira-Castro

The Psychological Record

When someone is described as memorizing a phone number, part of what is being asserted is that the person is capable of dialing the number without looking it up in the directory. Such responses, which may decrease and stop occurring as training increases, can be interpreted as nonrequired precurrent behavior. In different experiments, participants could look up an auxiliary screen to see the numbers (Experiment 1) or arbitrary characters (Experiment 3) corresponding to different shapes. In Experiment 2, a typing task with a covered keyboard was used, in which participants could look up an auxiliary screen to see key positions. …

Insights And Applications Assessing Public Participation In U.S. Watershed Planning Initiatives, Leslie Duram, Katharin G. Brown Jan 1999

Insights And Applications Assessing Public Participation In U.S. Watershed Planning Initiatives, Leslie Duram, Katharin G. Brown

Publications

A mail survey of 126 federally funded watershed planning initiatives yielded valid responses from 64 watershed contacts. Quantitative analysis revealed wide variation among watershed initiatives in terms of population size and land area encompassed. Likewise, watershed organization and participation characteristics ( agencies involved, frequency of meetings, and number of active participants) vary greatly. Qualitative analysis delineated the key issues of concern to watershed contacts: agricultural land use, stakeholder awareness, and interaction between local and federal entities. While specific situations vary by watershed, results indicate that door-to-door contact, public meetings, and information programs are the most useful methods for soliciting participation. …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Stochastic Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow Jan 1999

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Stochastic Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow

Articles and Preprints

We formulate and prove a local stable manifold theorem for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) that are driven by spatial Kunita-type semimartingales with stationary ergodic increments. Both Stratonovich and Itô-type equations are treated. Starting with the existence of a stochastic flow for a SDE, we introduce the notion of a hyperbolic stationary trajectory. We prove the existence of invariant random stable and unstable manifolds in the neighborhood of the hyperbolic stationary solution. For Stratonovich SDEs, the stable and unstable manifolds are dynamically characterized using forward and backward solutions of the anticipating SDE. The proof of the stable manifold theorem is based …

Signifying Nothing?: Martin Ritt's The Sound And The Fury (1959) As Deconstructive Adaptation, Walter C. Metz Jan 1999

Signifying Nothing?: Martin Ritt's The Sound And The Fury (1959) As Deconstructive Adaptation, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay defends Martin Ritt's film version of The Sound and the Fury (1959), starring Yul Brynner as a Cajun Jason Compson, traditionally positioned as one of the most ill-conceived film adaptations ever made, by highlighting how an academic modernist reading of the works of William Faulkner overwrites the intriguing possibilities of melodrama.
