Cold Tolerance And Fatty Acid Composition Of Striped Bass, White Bass, And Their Hybrids, Anita M. Kelly, Christopher C. Kohler Oct 1999

Cold Tolerance And Fatty Acid Composition Of Striped Bass, White Bass, And Their Hybrids, Anita M. Kelly, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

Cold tolerance of striped bass Morone saxatilis, white bass M. chrysops, palmetto bass (female striped bass × male white bass), and sunshine bass (female white bass × male striped bass) were compared under controlled laboratory conditions. Two groups of each taxon were acclimated at 20°C in a recirculating-water system housed in an environmental chamber and were fed either a natural or prepared diet for 84 d. The fatty acid composition of the natural diet was 13% more unsaturated than that of the prepared diet. Fish fed the natural diet subsequently had unsaturated:saturated fatty acid ratios 10–25% higher than …

Stress Distributions In Flowing Aggregated Colloidal Suspensions, Leo Silbert, R S. Farr, J R. Melrose, R C. Ball Sep 1999

Stress Distributions In Flowing Aggregated Colloidal Suspensions, Leo Silbert, R S. Farr, J R. Melrose, R C. Ball

Publications

Simulations of the flow of concentrated aggregated colloidal systems, at the particulate level, are used to investigate the distribution of stresses in the shear-thinning regime. It is found that the distribution of shear stress carried by interparticle bonds decays approximately exponentially at large stresses, but with a double-exponential distribution for values of positive stress. The microstructural mechanisms associated with large stresses are manifested in clusters which dominate the positive contribution to the stress in the system. Towards the end of shear thinning the highest forces occur along bonds defining rods of particles aligned approximately along the flow-compression direction. We propose …

Magnetic Properties Of Rtsb3, Michael Leonard, Shibaji Saha, Naushad Ali Apr 1999

Magnetic Properties Of Rtsb3, Michael Leonard, Shibaji Saha, Naushad Ali

Publications

Magnetization, electrical resistivity, and thermal expansion measurements have been performed on polycrystalline RTSb3 (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=Cr, V) samples in order to study their magnetic properties. Depending on the rare-earth element, RTSb3 has been found to have either a purely ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phase or combination of antiferromagnetic (lower-temperature) and ferromagnetic (higher-temperature) phases. The antiferromagnetic order evolves from the ferromagnetic order as a result of the competition between R3+ and Cr3+ ions. As R is changed from La to Dy, the antiferromagnetic ordering of the R3+ ions becomes more prominent …

Colossal Magnetoresistance In Ce Doped Manganese Oxides, J. R. Gebhardt, S. Roy, N. Ali Apr 1999

Colossal Magnetoresistance In Ce Doped Manganese Oxides, J. R. Gebhardt, S. Roy, N. Ali

Publications

In this study we investigate the effects of Ce doping in R1−xAxMnO3 (R = La, Ce, and A = Sr, Ce) on the magnetic and transport properties of this system. For La1−xCexMnO3 (LCMO), an increase in Ce concentration is accompanied by an increase in TC from 225 to 236 K, as well as an increase in the electrical resistivity. An extremely high resistivity is observed in the new system Ce1−xSrxMnO3 (CSMO) which becomes insulating below its Curie temperature of 43 K. …

Magnetic Phase Diagrams Of Erbium, B. H. Frazer, J. R. Gebhardt, N. Ali Apr 1999

Magnetic Phase Diagrams Of Erbium, B. H. Frazer, J. R. Gebhardt, N. Ali

Publications

The magnetic phase diagrams of erbium in the magnetic field–temperature plane have been constructed for applied magnetic fields along the a and b axes. For an a-axis applied field our HT phase diagrams determined from magnetization and magnetoresistance data are in good agreement and consistent with that of Jehan et al. for temperatures below 50 K. A splitting of the basal plane Néel temperature (TN) above 3.75 T introduces two new magnetic phases. Also a transition from a fan to a canted fan phase as suggested by Jehan et al. is observed in …

Factors In Organic Farmers' Decisionmaking: Diversity, Challenge, And Obstacles, Leslie Duram Mar 1999

Factors In Organic Farmers' Decisionmaking: Diversity, Challenge, And Obstacles, Leslie Duram

Publications

This research promotes our understanding of organic farmers' decisionmaking through individual farmers' experiences. A twofold survey was conducted to investigate characteristics of certified organic farmers in Colorado. Data from a mail survey (26 responses to 49 surveys sent) reveal patterns of farm operations and attitudes among this group of farmers. These questionnaires focused on land use, land tenure, operational change, and personal characteristics. In-depth interviews of five case study farmers provide additional insight into farmers' agricultural decisionmaking. These interviews were conversations that the farmers guided toward topics of relevance to them. Taken together, the mail and interview surveys provided information …

Insights And Applications Assessing Public Participation In U.S. Watershed Planning Initiatives, Leslie Duram, Katharin G. Brown Jan 1999

Insights And Applications Assessing Public Participation In U.S. Watershed Planning Initiatives, Leslie Duram, Katharin G. Brown

Publications

A mail survey of 126 federally funded watershed planning initiatives yielded valid responses from 64 watershed contacts. Quantitative analysis revealed wide variation among watershed initiatives in terms of population size and land area encompassed. Likewise, watershed organization and participation characteristics ( agencies involved, frequency of meetings, and number of active participants) vary greatly. Qualitative analysis delineated the key issues of concern to watershed contacts: agricultural land use, stakeholder awareness, and interaction between local and federal entities. While specific situations vary by watershed, results indicate that door-to-door contact, public meetings, and information programs are the most useful methods for soliciting participation. …

Signifying Nothing?: Martin Ritt's The Sound And The Fury (1959) As Deconstructive Adaptation, Walter C. Metz Jan 1999

Signifying Nothing?: Martin Ritt's The Sound And The Fury (1959) As Deconstructive Adaptation, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay defends Martin Ritt's film version of The Sound and the Fury (1959), starring Yul Brynner as a Cajun Jason Compson, traditionally positioned as one of the most ill-conceived film adaptations ever made, by highlighting how an academic modernist reading of the works of William Faulkner overwrites the intriguing possibilities of melodrama.
