(Teff,Log G,[Fe/H]) Classification Of Low-Resolution Stellar Spectra Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shawn Snider, Yuan Qu, Carlos Allende Prieto, Ted Von Hippel, Timothy C. Beers, Christopher Sneden, David L. Lambert, Silvia Rossi

New generation large-aperture telescopes, multi-object spectrographs, and large format detectors are making it possible to acquire very large samples of stellar spectra rapidly. In this context, traditional star-by-star spectroscopic analysis are no longer practical. New tools are required that are capable of extracting quickly and with reasonable accuracy important basic stellar parameters coded in the spectra. Recent analyses of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) applied to the classification of astronomical spectra have demonstrated the ability of this concept to derive estimates of temperature and luminosity. We have adapted the back-propagation ANN technique developed by von Hippel et al. (1994) to predict …

Coupling Of Spin Waves With Charge- And Spin Density Excitations In Spin-Polarized Quantum Wells, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn
Publications
The coupling of spin waves with charge- and spin-density waves is shown to be induced by a spin-dependent interaction in a quantum well, which is spin polarized by a dc magnetic field at an angle to the symmetry axis. The mixing of the plasmonic and magnonic modes, which occurs for both intra- and intersubband transitions, depends on the coupling constant of the spin-spin interaction, the tilt angle , and the initial spin polarization . ͓S0163-1829͑99͒08247-8͔

We report on a search for X-ray afterglows from gamma-ray bursts using the ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS) data. If the emission in the soft X-ray band is signif-icantly less beamed than in the gamma-ray band, we expect to detect many afterglows in the RASS. Our search procedure generated 23 afterglow candidates, where about 4 detections are predicted. Follow-up spectroscopy of several counterpart candidates strongly suggests a flare star origin of the RASS events in many, if not all, cases. Given the small number of events we conclude that the data are consistent with comparable beaming angles in the X-ray and …

We present high-precision UBVRI CCD photometry of the old open cluster NGC 188. Our color-magnitude diagram extends from near the red giant branch tip to as faint as ~5 mag below the main-sequence turnoff. From an analysis of these data along with published photometry for M67, we draw the following conclusions: (1) From the UBV two-color diagram, we find a reddening of E(B ̶ V) = 0.04 ± 0.02 for M67 and E(B ̶ V) = 0.09 ± 0.02 for NGC 188. (2) Based on main-sequence fitting to solar abundance isochrones, the distance moduli …

The optical transient of the faint gamma-ray burst GRB 990308 was detected by the QUEST camera on the Venezuelan 1 m Schmidt telescope starting 3.28 hr after the burst. Our photometry gives V= 18.32 ± 0.07, R = 18.14 ± 0. 06, B =18.65, and R=18.22 ± 0.05 for times ranging from 3.28 to 3.47 hr after the burst. The colors correspond to a spectral slope of close to f ∝ v^1/3 . Within the standard synchrotron fireball model, this rquires that the external medium be less dense than 10^4 cm^-3, the electrons contain more than 20% of the shock …

Cold Tolerance And Fatty Acid Composition Of Striped Bass, White Bass, And Their Hybrids, Anita M. Kelly, Christopher C. Kohler
Publications
Cold tolerance of striped bass Morone saxatilis, white bass M. chrysops, palmetto bass (female striped bass × male white bass), and sunshine bass (female white bass × male striped bass) were compared under controlled laboratory conditions. Two groups of each taxon were acclimated at 20°C in a recirculating-water system housed in an environmental chamber and were fed either a natural or prepared diet for 84 d. The fatty acid composition of the natural diet was 13% more unsaturated than that of the prepared diet. Fish fed the natural diet subsequently had unsaturated:saturated fatty acid ratios 10–25% higher than …

The traditional United States Supreme Court analysis for determining whether a group may exclude people from membership on the basis of sexual orientation involves a series of either/or choices. For example, in the context of the exclusion of homosexuals by the Boy Scouts of America, one issue is whether the Boy Scouts is a "public accommodation.' Another issue is whether homosexuals constitute a protected class. This Article argues that independent state constitutional analysis of this issue provides an opportunity to avoid the narrowing effects of the traditional dichotomies, and that courts should directly consider the interests of the parties. Enhanced Biotransformation Of Carbon Tetrachloride By Acetobacterium Woodii Upon Addition Of Hydroxocobalamin And Fructose, Syed A. Hashsham, David L. Freedman
Publications
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydroxocobalamin (OH-Cbl) on transformation of high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Acetobacterium woodii (ATCC 29683). Complete transfor-mation of 470 M (72 mg/liter [aqueous]) CT was achieved by A. woodii within 2.5 days, when 10 M OH-Cbl was added along with 25.2 mM fructose. This was approximately 30 times faster than A. woodii cultures (live or autoclaved) and medium that did not receive OH-Cbl and 5 times faster than those controls that did receive OH-Cbl, but either live A. woodii or fructose was missing. CT transformation in treatments with …

Stress Distributions In Flowing Aggregated Colloidal Suspensions, Leo Silbert, R S. Farr, J R. Melrose, R C. Ball
Publications
Simulations of the flow of concentrated aggregated colloidal systems, at the particulate level, are used to investigate the distribution of stresses in the shear-thinning regime. It is found that the distribution of shear stress carried by interparticle bonds decays approximately exponentially at large stresses, but with a double-exponential distribution for values of positive stress. The microstructural mechanisms associated with large stresses are manifested in clusters which dominate the positive contribution to the stress in the system. Towards the end of shear thinning the highest forces occur along bonds defining rods of particles aligned approximately along the flow-compression direction. We propose …

A Review Of Automated Stellar Spectral Classification And Surveys, Ted Von Hippel, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones
Publications
Modern spectroscopic surveys and automated classifiers are becoming so inextricably linked that it is difficult even to summarize one without discussing the other. Some of the automated classifiers are being built because of current analysis needs, though with a clear anticipation of future, larger surveys. Other automated classifiers are being designed specifically for future surveys. Automated classifiers may be applied to databases already in hand, to real-time analysis at the telescope, or one day to on-board satellite analysis where the raw data are too bulky to save and transmit. In addition, many current spectroscopic surveys target galaxies. These surveys may …

Evolution Of The Lithium Abundances Of Solar-Type Stars. Ix. High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Low-Mass Stars In Ngc 2264, David R. Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Lionel Siess, Burton F. Jones, Debra Fischer
Publications
We have obtained Keck HIRES spectra of 35 objects in the pre–main-sequence cluster NGC 2264 in order to determine their radial velocities, rotation rates, activity levels, and Li abundances. Our precise radial velocities indicate that the eight objects we observed that lie below a 5 Myr isochrone are nonmembers. This means that the age spread within NGC 2264 is only about 4 Myr, a factor of 2 less than found previously, although this is a lower limit to the true age spread because star formation is still taking place in the cluster. After correction for non-LTE effects, our Li abundances …

Observations And Interpretation Of Gravity Wave Induced Fluctuations In The O I (557.7 Nm) Airglow, G. Schubert, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., C. A. Tepley
Publications
Observations of fluctuations in the intensity and temperature of the O I (557.7 nm) airglow taken at Arecibo in 1989 are reported and interpreted on the assumption that they are caused by gravity waves propagating through the emission layer. The data give the magnitude of Krassovsky's ratio as 3.5 ± 2.2, at periods between about 5 and 10 hours. Comparison with theory shows that the gravity waves responsible for the measured airglow variations must have long wavelengths of several thousand kilometers. The observed phases of Krassovsky's ratio are in good agreement with theoretically predicted values at the long wavelengths and …

Search For Grb X-Ray Afterglows In The Rosat All-Sky Survey, Jochen Greiner, Dieter H. Hartmann, Wolfgang Voges, Thomas Boller
Publications
We report on the status of our search for X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burts (GRBs) using ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS) date. The number of potential X-ray afterglow candidates with respect to the expected number of bearmed GRBs allows to constrain the relative beaming angles of GRB emission and afterglow emission at about 1-5 hrs after the GRB.

Nato’S Institutional Adaptation And Post-Strategic Security In Europe, 1990-97: Political Challenges And Theoretical Considerations, Alexander Siedschlag

Doch …

Magnetic Properties Of Rtsb3, Michael Leonard, Shibaji Saha, Naushad Ali
Publications
Magnetization, electrical resistivity, and thermal expansion measurements have been performed on polycrystalline RTSb3 (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=Cr, V) samples in order to study their magnetic properties. Depending on the rare-earth element, RTSb3 has been found to have either a purely ferromagnetic (or antiferromagnetic) phase or combination of antiferromagnetic (lower-temperature) and ferromagnetic (higher-temperature) phases. The antiferromagnetic order evolves from the ferromagnetic order as a result of the competition between R3+ and Cr3+ ions. As R is changed from La to Dy, the antiferromagnetic ordering of the R3+ ions becomes more prominent …

Colossal Magnetoresistance In Ce Doped Manganese Oxides, J. R. Gebhardt, S. Roy, N. Ali
Publications
In this study we investigate the effects of Ce doping in R1−xAxMnO3 (R = La, Ce, and A = Sr, Ce) on the magnetic and transport properties of this system. For La1−xCexMnO3 (LCMO), an increase in Ce concentration is accompanied by an increase in TC from 225 to 236 K, as well as an increase in the electrical resistivity. An extremely high resistivity is observed in the new system Ce1−xSrxMnO3 (CSMO) which becomes insulating below its Curie temperature of 43 K. …
