Toward Genetic Engineering: Teaching Transformation Using The Pglo Plasmid In High School Classrooms, Isaac Kovash, Tahmina Hossain, Sudeshna Roy, Michael Mitchell, Madhav P. Nepal, Nicholas Butzin

iLEARN Teaching Resources

In this lesson plan, students will learn about genetic engineering and perform the same transformation protocol used by scientists on a daily basis around the world. Genetic engineering is a technique used for direct manipulation, alteration, or modification of genes or genomes of an organism to manipulate the phenotypes. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has emerged everywhere as a mainstay from agriculture to pharmaceuticals. Through this lesson, students will transform Escherichia coli with pGLO plasmid, which give a brilliant fluorescent green glow under UV light. Students will also learn the central dogma of molecular biology: DNA à RNA …

Synthetic Biology For Autotrophic And Heterotrophic Production Of Ethanol, Nathanael Braselton Jan 2016

Synthetic Biology For Autotrophic And Heterotrophic Production Of Ethanol, Nathanael Braselton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growing energy demand and rising levels of greenhouse gases has put massive strain on the global environment. Alternatives to fossil fuels are being developed in an attempt to curb climate change. Biotechnology has made large strides in order to create a completely renewable energy source by genetically modifying microbes to produce biofuels and other “green” high value compounds. In this thesis project, (1) E. coli ATCC9637 (E. coli W) was genetically modified to produce bioethanol from beet juice which contains mainly sucrose. The ethanol productivity by engineered E. coli W was 18.8 mg/L/H/OD600.
(2) Cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC7120 …

The Effect Of Biotechnology And Biofuels On U.S. Corn Belt Cropping Systems., Scott Fausti, Evert Van Der Sluis, Bahir Qasmi, Jonathan Lundgren Apr 2014

The Effect Of Biotechnology And Biofuels On U.S. Corn Belt Cropping Systems., Scott Fausti, Evert Van Der Sluis, Bahir Qasmi, Jonathan Lundgren

Economics Staff Paper Series

The effects of transgenic crop and federal biofuel policy on state-level cropping patterns in the Corn Belt region are investigated (2000-2012). The literature links the expansion of corn acreage to the supplanting of small grain and hay acreage in this region. Empirical evidence generated by a random intercept model with fixed effects indicates that the intensification of corn acres planted was positively impacted by biotech advancements in energy and agriculture. This suggests producers are moving away from diverse cropping patterns and the rotational practices associated with a diverse crop planting strategy. However, the empirical evidence suggests that the effects of …

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs Oct 2001

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

The paper provides an overview of the types of economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of the US domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed in the paper are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a 'science-based' regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding …
