Blood And Tissue Ammonium-Nitrogen Levels And Tissue Water In Pregnant Urea-Treated Rabbits, Myron Leon Lang Feb 1969

Blood And Tissue Ammonium-Nitrogen Levels And Tissue Water In Pregnant Urea-Treated Rabbits, Myron Leon Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ammonia is produced by the normal cellular metabolic processes in mammals; however, ammonia can produce deleterious effects which are well known to many research fields. Ammonia when administered or absorbed at a slow rate may be tolerated in vast quantities by most living organisms. Relatively minute blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) levels are present because mammals have efficient systems for excreting ammonia or converting it to non-toxic end products. Normal BAN levels originate mainly from cellular metabolism and bacterial degradation of nitrogenous substrates in the alimentary tract lumen. Impaired detoxification processes (hepatic functional insufficiency and/or portal system shunts) promote elevated BAN levels …

Induced Multiple Ovulation In The Bovine, Franklin Lewis Schwartz Feb 1969

Induced Multiple Ovulation In The Bovine, Franklin Lewis Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To the cow-calf operator, the single most important factor affecting his economic livelihood is the number of calves produced and weaned for a given year. Unfortunately, due to low reproductive efficiency in comparison with other cattle traits, the possibility of having a calf crop of greater th9n 80 percent at weaning is not too common. The low heritability estimates that have been reported for reproductive performance indicate that little improvement can be expected through selection. To the animal scientist this problem can best be met by the development of a simple and reliable method of inducing for the most part, …

Investigation Of The Dielectric Properties Of Grain At Microwave Frequencies, Arthur A. Kruse Jan 1969

Investigation Of The Dielectric Properties Of Grain At Microwave Frequencies, Arthur A. Kruse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The components of the complex dielectric constant of feed grains are obtained for the 8.5 to 12 gHz frequency range. The short-circuited wave guide method is employed to provide null-shift data for computer calculation of the first-order approximation of the real part of the complex dielectric constant under the simplifying assumption of negligible loss. Correction to this value is then made, where appreciable, by calculating the loss tangent from attenuation data independently obtained for the grains. The imaginary part of the complex dielectric constant then is obtained by multiplying the loss tangent by the real part. Curves of the real …

Isolation Of Keratinophilic Fungi From Soil And Wild Animals In South Dakota, William Urban Knudtson Jan 1969

Isolation Of Keratinophilic Fungi From Soil And Wild Animals In South Dakota, William Urban Knudtson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little is known of the ecology of keratinophilic fungi in animal populations and their habitats in South Dakota. Recent investigation of an outbreak of ringworm in blue foxes on a fur farm in South Dakota indicated that the source of infection may have been wild animals which had been captured and raised in the kennels previous to occupancy by the foxes. In recent years, a number of investigators have demonstrated that small and large mammals may carry keratinophilic fungi in their coats (13, 29-31, 52, 56-60, 63, 70, 77) and have postulated on the role of infected animals in …

Scheduling And Position Control Of Hospital Personnel, Larry Eugene Schmidt Jan 1969

Scheduling And Position Control Of Hospital Personnel, Larry Eugene Schmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A review of the literature indicates that previous studies have not provided an effective scheduling technique which will comply both with the restrictions of a set weekend-off sequence and of modern employment laws. Most hospitals are required to comply with the wage and hour laws of their state and, therefore, must schedule within this restriction. In a large number of cases, the hospital and the staff members have agreed upon some set weekend off sequence, thus placing an additional restriction on the scheduling procedure. The concept of position control is not mentioned in the literature. Preliminary investigation by this author …

Mare's Milk Composition As Related To "Foal Heat" Scours, Robert H. Johnston Jan 1969

Mare's Milk Composition As Related To "Foal Heat" Scours, Robert H. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A condition known as “foal heat" scours often develops in young foals during the mare's first estrum, which usually commences at nine days post-partum. Although death due to this affliction is rare, the results such as loss or hair around the anus, unthriftiness of the foals, foul odor in the stable area, and unsight1iness or the foals causes more than minor concern among horsemen. Severa1 causes for "foal heat" scours have been proposed by those familiar with the condition Among these theories are (1) changes in the composition of the milk, (2) overloading of the foal's digestive tract, (3) ingestion …

Cell-Wall Analyses Of Diphtheroids Isolated From Cattle And Swine, Everett E. Scheetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biever, working in this laboratory, isolated numerous diphtheroidal organisms from cattle and swine sources. These anaerobic diptheroids were morphologically similar to organisms in the genera Corynebacterium and Actinomyces. King and Meyer found that isolates of anaerobic diptheroids from human sources were more closely related to the Corynebacterium based upon metabolic and serologic differentiation. Their work consisted of separating A. bovis from several isolates of anaerobic diptheroids on the basis of the catalase test, litmus milk reactions, and the fermentation of xylose, salicin, and raffinose. However, Grasser reported that the fermentation reactions are variable and cannot be used as definite criteria …

Heat Transfer By Numerical Solution For A Class Of Radiating Fins, Jia-Bo Hwang Jan 1969

Heat Transfer By Numerical Solution For A Class Of Radiating Fins, Jia-Bo Hwang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has long been known that the heat transfer from a solid body to an ambient fluid can be increased by increasing the surface area of the solid body. Extended surfaces, or fins, are indispensable for compact heat exchangers. Geometrically, fins may be classified as straight fins, annular fins, and rod fins or spines. In most applications of fins, a fluid is circulating inside the fin-supporting pipe while the outside is exposed to another ambient fluid. The purpose of fin analysis is to find the temperature distribution in the fin and the heat transfer from the fin to the ambient …

At first his novels seemed primarily entertaining, but interest in his work developed with an awareness of a parallel between Manfred's concepts of the isolation of man and relationship to his fellow man and modern psychological ideas. Throughout the research and study of several novels, insights have crystallized to form a clearer idea of man's search for identity and the results of that search in …

Melengenstrol Acetate And Diethylstilbestrol For Feedlot Heifers, Donald C. Ridgway Jan 1969

Melengenstrol Acetate And Diethylstilbestrol For Feedlot Heifers, Donald C. Ridgway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heifers comprise 30 to 40% or- the feed cattle slaughtered annually. The ratio of steers to heifers will vary depending on the numbers saved for breeding herds. Numbers needed for this purpose may vary somewhat depending on the rate or culling in cow herds and changes in the cattle population. It is apparent, however, that a large percentage of the cattle available for feedlots will be heifers. Heifers gain at a slower rate and utilize feed less efficiently than steers under similar feeding systems. Heifer carcasses have also been shown to contain more fat trim than steer carcasses when fed …

A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves Jan 1969

A Time-Lapse Photography Study Of Free Stall Housing For Dairy Calves, James L. Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a principal means of herd replacement and expansion, the dairy calf is vital to the success of a dairy enterprise. High mortality rates among dairy calves, frequently as high as twenty percent, are very costly to the dairyman. Besides paying the high cost of losing a calf, the dairyman must find a replacement for the animal. Obtaining a herd animal from outside sources involves the risk that the replacement may be of lower quality than was the lost calf. Through careful selection of animals and a well-planned breeding program, a good farm manager will find raising his own replacement …

A Mathematical Model Of A River Basin, Leroy John Petrick Jan 1969

A Mathematical Model Of A River Basin, Leroy John Petrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of our rivers by population and industrial activities has increased dramatically in recent years. Since the number of rivers available has remained constant, a need has been created to optimize the utilization. In order to optimize, the effects on the physical properties of the river caused by changes in utilization must be determined. Quantity, the amount of water flowing in the river, along with quality, the value of the water for further utilization, are physical properties of the river. Variations in these two properties measure the effects caused by changes in the utilization. The utilization within a basin …
