The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson Jan 1974

The Norwegian Heritage In America: Rølvaag's Concern For A Pluralistic Society, Hazel L. Halvorson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ole Rølvaag has been acclaimed as an interpreter of the Norwegian immigrants, particularly those who settled on the Midwestern prairies. In his probing of the psychological side of pioneering, he added a new dimension to what Henry Cornmage!' calls the "two grand themes of American history"--immigration and the westward movement. The central purpose of Rølvaag’s life was two-pronged: the interpretation of his countrymen's experience in the New World and the preservation of Norwegian heritage in America. The latter cause he championed for two reasons: l) to help the immigrants make their adjustment to the new land, and 2) to enrich …

Infiltration Basins For The Final Treatment Of Lagoon Effluent In South Dakota, Peter S. Johnson Jan 1974

Infiltration Basins For The Final Treatment Of Lagoon Effluent In South Dakota, Peter S. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The declared objective of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 is "to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nations waters. " A schedule of required treatment is also· promulgated that calls for the equivalent of secondary treatment by July 1, 1977 and the best practicable waste treatment by July 11, 1983 for all publicly owned treatment plants. This Act serves notice that many existing wastewater treatment plants will have to be upgraded to meet the new federal regulations required by the Act. This, coupled with the already questionable quality of lagoon effluent, …

The Probability Of A Basketball Rebounding In Specific Areas After A Missed Shot Is Taken From A Certain Area, James Egge Jan 1974

The Probability Of A Basketball Rebounding In Specific Areas After A Missed Shot Is Taken From A Certain Area, James Egge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rebounding in basketball has always been of concern and importance to coaches at all levels of competition. The collection of data concerning on-the-court performance of basketball players has increased greatly during the past twelve years; however, only limited rebounding statistics have appeared in recent studies. Allsen concluded that shots attempted from the right side have a tendency to rebound to the middle and right side. On the other hand, when shots were attempted from the left side a greater percentage of missed shots rebounded to the right side or middle area of the court. In Allsen's study there was equal …

A Study Of Selected Demographic Factors Associated With The Number And Characteristics Of Marriages Solemnized In South Dakota: 1960-1972, Jon Gregory Lundeen Jan 1974

A Study Of Selected Demographic Factors Associated With The Number And Characteristics Of Marriages Solemnized In South Dakota: 1960-1972, Jon Gregory Lundeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The marriage statistics for South Dakota from 1960 to 1970 reveal that the number of marriages has steadily increased since 1960. The number of births, however, has steadily decreased in number in South Dakota since 1960. Perhaps this is understandable inasmuch as Paul H. Jacobson points out that the analysis and interpretation of marriage statistics is the least developed branch of American vital statistics. This is an important area for study, however, because any community is highly influenced by the proportion of its population that is single, married, widowed, or divorced. The marital condition of a population influences its birth …

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek Jan 1974

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All ecosystems have two basic biological components. One component is the autotrophic organisms which fix energy from the sun and use inorganic substances to create food. The other is the heterotrophic organisms which utilize the stored food of the autotrophs, rearrange it, and finally decompose the complex materials into simple inorganic compounds. The autotrophs, which are predominantly green plants, grow wherever the most sunlight is available, heterotrophs predominate wherever organic matter accumulates, primarily in the upper layer of the soil. Heterotrophs consist of consumers which feed on green plants and other organisms. Decomposers, chiefly bacteria and fungi that break down …

A Study Of The Charge Distribution In Unconjugated Thiocarbonyl Compounds: A Comparison With Carbonyl And Imine Chromophores, John Yuchu Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Via a literature search it has been shown, by means of the ira spectra of thioamides, the dipole moments of thiocarbonyl compounds, the basicity of thioamides and thioureas, the acidity of carboxylic acids carrying a substituent with the thiocarbonyl function, LCAO-b MOc method, and proton chemical shifts, that the thiocarbonyl group has a tendency to give greater mesomeric interaction (a) than the carbonyl group (b) with electron donating heteroatoms. A comparison of the charge distribution in unconjugated thiocarbonyl (c), carbonyl (d), and imine (e) chromophores is made by means of surveying the dipole moments of several small molecules, calculating the …

Relationship Between Pre-Meet Anxiety Level And Gymnastic Meet Performance In Women's Intercollegiate Gymnastics, Barbara Kae Langemo Jan 1974

Relationship Between Pre-Meet Anxiety Level And Gymnastic Meet Performance In Women's Intercollegiate Gymnastics, Barbara Kae Langemo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Competing in athletics, by their very nature, subjects’ participants to many anxieties and stresses. Each person is an individual in the way he/she responds to certain stimuli and the responses are dependent upon social-background, personality, intelligence and emotional status. All of these factors intertwined dictate how an individual reacts to a variety of stimuli. Each competitor will differ in the degree of anxiety felt and the intensity may dictate how each will perform during competition. This one factor, anxiety, may explain why two individuals equal in skill level and physical ability perform so differently during competition in any given sport. …

Biological Control Of Musk Thistle, Carduus Nutans, In South Dakota, Dennis Morihara Jan 1974

Biological Control Of Musk Thistle, Carduus Nutans, In South Dakota, Dennis Morihara

Two sites in southeastern South Dakota were used in this study. Both sites supported unusually dense infestations of C. nutans and were chosen on that basis. Site A was located at an unoccupied farmstead in Minnehaha County, 2 miles S.W. of Crooks. This site was composed of 3 distinct infestations of musk thistle: (1) the first stand of thistles was approximately 2 x 9 m surrounded by Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila L., Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronquist (mare's tail) and a Bromus sp., probably B. inermis Leysser. The thistles in this area stood 2+ m tall at maturity. (2) The second …

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba Jan 1974

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the light of recent concern over world population growth, it would be interesting to study to what extent West Africa as a developing area has experienced changes in fertility, mortality and natural increase. This study would be especially interesting in that developing countries like those in West Africa account for approximately two-thirds of the world's population. Students of demography generally hold that as a rural agricultural country becomes more urbanized and industrialized, a transition also occurs in the demographic process. Under the influence of modernization, death rates decline rapidly while high fertility continues, producing a rapid population growth that …

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens Jan 1974

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1960, the city of Brookings, South Dakota began operating a solid waste disposal site in an abandoned gravel pit approximately two miles south of the city. Because the surrounding residences obtain their water supply from groundwater found in a shallow aquifer in the area, immediate concern was expressed about the effects of the sanity landfill of groundwater quality. In response to the objections to the refuse disposal site raised by-the people in the area, the city of Brookings initiated a study of groundwater quality at the site in 1960. Later, in 1964, a comprehensive study of the groundwater within …

A System To Measure Thermal Resistivity Of Soils, Steven F. Oakland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A transient heat-flow, cylindrical-probe method for measuring thermal resistivity of &oils in situ is investigated. The theory of conduction of heat in a medium containing a cylindrical heat source is studied in detail. Effects of finite probe radius, length, and thermal conductivity are investigated and minimized. The effect of thermal contact-resistance at the probe surface is also studied. Errors in measurements of samples of finite dimensions are considered. An electronic system which uses the cylindrical-probe method to measure thermal resistivity of soils is described. Results are given for the use of the system in the measurement of thermal resistivity of …

Energy Sources In Starter Diets For Early Weaned Pigs, Leon Jon Reiner Jan 1974

Energy Sources In Starter Diets For Early Weaned Pigs, Leon Jon Reiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The swine industry is largely dependent upon feed grains as major dietary ingredients because of the very limited ability or the pig to utilize roughages. The dependence upon feed grains puts the pig in direct competition with humans for available food supplies. Grains are an excellent source of carbohydrate but in general are a poor supplier or protein. Raising the level and quality or protein in corn and oats wou1d be of great economic and nutritional value. New uses of high protein ingredients, which were once used as supplementa1 protein for swine, are continually being implemented to help meet the …

South Dakota Gubernatorial Inaugural Addresses, 1889-1931, Terry L. Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the purposes of this study it was judged necessary to define two terms: 1. Rhetorical environment has been defined as including the place of the inaugurals, the audiences present, and the issues prominent in the state at the time an inaugural address was delivered. 2. A theme is defined as an original statement that encompasses an overall idea and may have supporting assertions. A theme is subordinate only to the thesis and is coordinate with other themes. This particular study began as an analysis of all gubernatorial South Dakota inaugural addresses from 1889 through 1973. However, after the research …

Comparison Of Methods For The Rapid Detection Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Edwin D. Oliver Jan 1974

Comparison Of Methods For The Rapid Detection Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Edwin D. Oliver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pollution of water by fecal material presents a health hazard to cities obtaining water from streams and rivers since many pathogenic microorganisms, including the fecal streptococci, are associated with this material. Recent studies have furnished data indicating that the fecal streptococci are more accurate than coliform tests for evaluating the sanitary quality of water. The fecal streptococci are gram-positive cocci found in the intestines of man and animals. They have been further subdivided into the enterococcus and viridans streptococci which contain the Lancefield Group D antigen. The enterococci include Streptococcus faecalis and its varieties, while streptococcus b++ovis and Streptococcus …

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad Jan 1974

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a warm-blooded animal, homeotherm, is subjected to an environment colder than body temperature, according to the physical laws of heat and mass transfer, heat dissipation from the animal will be increased. Left unchecked the body temperature will drop, homeothermia, possibly resulting in death. The animal compensates for this heat loss by increasing heat production and/or reducing heat loss by a number of chemical or physical adjustments. One such adjustment is vasoconstriction, which reduces blood flow to the surface, thereby, reducing the temperature of the skin and extremities, with peripheral temperatures of some homeotherms dropping to slightly above freezing without …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1960's people have become concerned about pesticide residues and their effects on the environment including the human population. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), one general class of residues, have been commercially manufactured in the United States since 1929. They have been used in many products such as plasticizers, hydraulic fluids, lubricants, electrical capacitors, electrical transformers, vacuum pumps, heat transfer systems, wax extenders, dedusting agents, surface coatings, adhesives, printing inks, pesticide extenders and carbonless reproducing paper. Food and Drug Administration guidelines require that the maximum amount of PCB's should not exceed 0.20 parts per million (ppm) in milk (equivalent to 5.0 …

An Experimental Heat Transfer Analysis Of Summer Cooling Requirements For Tractor Cabs In South Dakota, Joseph C. Thomas Jan 1974

An Experimental Heat Transfer Analysis Of Summer Cooling Requirements For Tractor Cabs In South Dakota, Joseph C. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The past decade has brought many changes to the farmers of the Great Plains. Fewer people are engaged in agricultural production, and the average farm size continues to grow. Today's farmers are buying bigger tractors, many of which have cabs to minimize effects of increased noise pollution, dust, and temperature extremes. Since these cabs were designed to serve as protection from noise and the elements, they must be relatively tight. During hot summer weather the enclosure will become unbearably hot. For this reason, an adequate air conditioning system is almost a necessity. Modern tractor cab air conditioning allows the operator …

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex Jan 1974

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium biochemistry has been of general interest since the discovery of selenium as the toxic agent in certain plants, which when ingested by animals causes a definite disease syndrome and even death. Early scientists suggested that the logical place in the body for toxic selenium compounds to attack was at the various sites occupied by sulfur. In 1939 a study was published which indicated that reduced glutathione (GSH), a thiol, protected rats against death from a minimum fatal dose of selenium given as sodium selenite. Since this discovery, the reaction of GSH with various selenium containing compounds has been the …

In addition to the drills administered to the three treatment groups, all four groups took part in weightlifting three days per …

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag Jan 1974

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of effort has been devoted to the study of noise suppression in the jet engine air intake. Noise suppression by sonic choking is well known, but noise suppression by subsonic choking is less understood. Sound waves generated by the compressor fan are attenuated while travelling upstream in high Mach number flow. The limiting case is when a sonic plane is generated in the inlet. In this case, theoretically speaking, no sound waves can travel through the sonic plane. There are many factors which influence subsonic choking. The nonlinear behavior of the spinning waves generated by the compressor …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In view of the wide disparities in school financing in South Dakota, the need for change in the present system is becoming increasingly apparent. Given that most school systems rely heavily on the local property tax for their revenue, the common element of most proposed changes is to lessen such reliance. To do so, it is believed will eliminate the close ties between a school district's wealth and the quality of education it is able to finance. Such reform would likely make for a more equitable educational system in South Dakota. For indeed there exist considerable variations in school district …

Attitudes Of Brookings High School Students Toward Variant Media And Use Of Library Resources, Joan D. Tabor Jan 1974

Attitudes Of Brookings High School Students Toward Variant Media And Use Of Library Resources, Joan D. Tabor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study such as this is important in that a student with the desire to keep abreast of current events should have an equal opportunity to read the current periodicals. If the home is unable financially to provide this material, the schools should assume the role of provider. If all students have access to current materials and do not depend upon library periodicals; perhaps the amount of money being budgeted cannot be justified. The objectives of this study were to determine: 1. What media did the students of Brookings High School use for information gathering and/or opinion formulation concerning current …

Investigation Of The Anaerobic-Aerobic Treatment System Treating Potato Processing Wastes, Midwest Foods Corporation, Clark, South Dakota, William J. Trygstad Jan 1974

Investigation Of The Anaerobic-Aerobic Treatment System Treating Potato Processing Wastes, Midwest Foods Corporation, Clark, South Dakota, William J. Trygstad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rapid increase in raw potato production has been accompanied by an even greater increase in the amount of processed potatoes. In 1946, only 4.6 percent of the annual potato production was processed into specialty items. By 1960, 32 percent of the total potato crop was being processed. Predictions for 1970 were that more than 50 percent of the raw potatoes would be processed into potato food products. Approximately 36 percent of the potatoes processed in 1964 consisted of frozen potato products. Predictions by DuPont indicate that by 1976, over 3926 million pounds of frozen potato products will be produced. …

Soil Infiltration Tertiary Treatment Of Stabilization Pond Effluent, Charles Allan Tiltrum Jan 1974

Soil Infiltration Tertiary Treatment Of Stabilization Pond Effluent, Charles Allan Tiltrum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Whenever man begins to alter these naturally occurring events, problems arise which must be answered. In the case of engineered soil systems, it is the engineer who must cope with these problems. As discussed later in the review of literature, previous studies conducted on similar types of soil at different locations have revealed different infiltration rates and quality improvements. These contrasting results have indicated that data obtained from other studies cannot be used to reliably predict the infiltration rates or improvements in water quality for soils at different locations. Due to the complex nature of the different soil types and …

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen Jan 1974

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a time of increased awareness of regional and community repercussions of socio-economic and political decisions which often originate outside of the region or community, there is a strong need for the development of a theoretically acceptable, and statistically applicable method, by which the impact of these various decisions upon the regional economy can be delineated. A priori knowledge, based upon an abstract theoretical model is not sufficient. The ramifications of decisions which affect the income producing sectors of a regional economy are not contained within a vacuum. It is paramount that the regional impacts of such decisions be estimated …

A Neoclassical Growth Model With An Environment Sector, Gregory Henry Wagner Jan 1974

A Neoclassical Growth Model With An Environment Sector, Gregory Henry Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current discussions often link economic growth as a causative factor in the increase of pollution. Growth in the economy has a number of causes. These include technological innovation, resource discovery and population growth along with the most widely discussed, investment. Economic growth in its advanced stages can cause severe depletion of raw materials, environmental pollution from energy use, and overtaxing of the environment's capacity to absorb and recycle waste products. A simple solution to growth related pollution would be to reduce the rate of growth and therefore reduce pollution. Herein lies a dilemma. Edwin L. Dole has written that reducing …
