Effects Of Fungus-Fermented Soybeans On Broiler Growth And Life Cycle Performance Of Coturnix Quail, Cheong Choo Chah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the extensive data that have accumulated on the detrimental effect of molds on the growth of farm animals, very little is known as to the beneficial role of fungi in animal feed. Recent studies at South Dakota State University research laboratories revealed, however, that only 164 of 392 strains of Aspergilli were found to be toxic. When the cultures were grown on sterile soybeans or wheat, some of the tested cultures exerted positive effects on growth of chicks and mice. Hence, the investigations reported herein were initiated to obtain further information on those cultures beneficial to chick performance and …

American Labor Unions: Structure, Conduct, Performance, Lyle Adrian Johnson Jan 1974

American Labor Unions: Structure, Conduct, Performance, Lyle Adrian Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given some specific assumptions, theories have provided specific conclusion concerning unions. This type of theoretical framework, however, provides for a ''narrow" discussion of union activities. General textbooks written about labor unions supply an opposite approach by providing much material dealing with union relationships. A more comprehensive approach, however, may be developed through an analysis of labor unions with industrial organization theories. This type of analysis allows one to see both the forest and the trees. The specific objectives of this research paper are to study: 1. union organizations and their operations 2. antitrust policy toward union structure 3. strike costs …

Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis Jan 1974

Parasites Of Salmonid Fishes From Southcentral Alaska, James Carl Riis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of fish parasites is directly related to the value of the fish they affect. Alaskan salmonids are extremely important and are constantly increasing in value to the United States. Other countries, such as Japan and Russia, are also finding Alaskan salmonids important as a foodstuff. If human populations continue growing at present rates, in only a few years there could be twice as many people eating fish. As a recreational asset in Alaska, salmonids rank at or near the top, both for sportfishing and as a natural attraction. It is thus important from an economic point of view …

Volatility, Drift And Phytotoxicity Of Dicamba To Corn When Applied With Additives, Bart A. Brinkman Jan 1974

Volatility, Drift And Phytotoxicity Of Dicamba To Corn When Applied With Additives, Bart A. Brinkman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Herbicides have become an important asset to the farmer since the discovery of 2,4-D as a useful weed killer. Although herbicides are a relatively new and useful tool, various hazards are associated with their use. Drift and volatility are of primary concern. Air pollution is recognized as an environmental detriment to both plants and animals. The prevention of herbicide drift and volatility is necessary to maintain an environment suitable for many plant habitats. Dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid) is used to control broadleaf weeds in corn, small grains, lawns, and rangelands. Sometimes nontarget areas adjacent to crops are affected seriously because of …

Sulfur Supplementation With Soybean Meal Or Urea For Feedlot Lambs, Joseph Cletus Ebert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the urgent tasks facing agricultural scientists throughout the world is that of supplying sufficient food of adequate quality to the ever-increasing human population. The problem is not only that of supplying calories but also providing adequate quantity and quality of protein. Ruminant animals have the ability to convert much plant energy, not utilizable or having low availability for man, and nonprotein nitrogen products into body tissues. Ruminant animals, therefore, can have a very important role in providing food for the human population. The most widely used nonprotein nitrogen compounds urea. The process of building amino acids into body …

Synthesis Of S-(1-Diazo-2,2,2-Trifluorethyl) Cysteine Dioxide : A Potential Gutamine Antagonist, Robert M. Olson Jan 1974

Synthesis Of S-(1-Diazo-2,2,2-Trifluorethyl) Cysteine Dioxide : A Potential Gutamine Antagonist, Robert M. Olson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Compounds affecting the utilization of L-glutamine have a comparatively long history in the field of cancer chemotherapy. The Streptomyces antibiotics, azaserine (0-diazoacetyl-L-serine) and DON (6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine) inhibit to varying extents those aminations in which glutamine serves as an amino group donor. This inhibition is achieved in at least one case by the glutamine antagonists alkylating the sulfhydryl group of the enzyme that catalyzes the amino group transfer of glutamine. A distinguishing feature of the diazo analogs of glutamine is the very reactive diazo group that enhances nucleophilic reactions on the adjacent carbon atom. Because of the increased reactivity created by the …

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba Jan 1974

Population Change In West Africa : 1954-1972, Ndidi Odashionu Okwumaba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the light of recent concern over world population growth, it would be interesting to study to what extent West Africa as a developing area has experienced changes in fertility, mortality and natural increase. This study would be especially interesting in that developing countries like those in West Africa account for approximately two-thirds of the world's population. Students of demography generally hold that as a rural agricultural country becomes more urbanized and industrialized, a transition also occurs in the demographic process. Under the influence of modernization, death rates decline rapidly while high fertility continues, producing a rapid population growth that …

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad Jan 1974

Physiological Responses Of Holstein Steer Calves To Winter Climatic Conditions, Jay A. Runestad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When a warm-blooded animal, homeotherm, is subjected to an environment colder than body temperature, according to the physical laws of heat and mass transfer, heat dissipation from the animal will be increased. Left unchecked the body temperature will drop, homeothermia, possibly resulting in death. The animal compensates for this heat loss by increasing heat production and/or reducing heat loss by a number of chemical or physical adjustments. One such adjustment is vasoconstriction, which reduces blood flow to the surface, thereby, reducing the temperature of the skin and extremities, with peripheral temperatures of some homeotherms dropping to slightly above freezing without …

The Erythropoietic Effects Of Dibenzyline, Atropine And Iron Dextran On Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Rex Edwin Riis Jan 1974

The Erythropoietic Effects Of Dibenzyline, Atropine And Iron Dextran On Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Rex Edwin Riis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neonatal anemia of rats, swine and humans is a common physiological phenomenon. The progression of the anemia is subjected to wide individual variation and usually progresses inversely to the dam's nutrition. The neonate's nutrition also inversely alters the anemic period. The neonatal anemia does not become apparent until three to five days postpartum. The neonate demonstrates a fast-growing period following parturition with only small storage iron reserves available for the developing tissues. Consequently, there is a decrease in iron availability for normal hemoglobin synthesis and mature erythrocyte formation. The anemic neonate becomes more susceptible to disease which may terminate …

In addition, the disadvantages and contributions of each system would be noted in order to recognize and analyze the problems inherent in recognizing speech. Secondly, an analysis of the major problems blocking automatic speech recognition was desired not only to investigate these problems, but also to evaluate the state of their solutions. Thirdly, an experiment was performed …

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen Jan 1974

A Dynamic Impact Model Of Regional Income : A Reduced Form Approach, Cameron S. Thraen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a time of increased awareness of regional and community repercussions of socio-economic and political decisions which often originate outside of the region or community, there is a strong need for the development of a theoretically acceptable, and statistically applicable method, by which the impact of these various decisions upon the regional economy can be delineated. A priori knowledge, based upon an abstract theoretical model is not sufficient. The ramifications of decisions which affect the income producing sectors of a regional economy are not contained within a vacuum. It is paramount that the regional impacts of such decisions be estimated …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg Jan 1974

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The School Property Tax And The Disparities In Public School Finance In South Dakota, Ronald R. Soderberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In view of the wide disparities in school financing in South Dakota, the need for change in the present system is becoming increasingly apparent. Given that most school systems rely heavily on the local property tax for their revenue, the common element of most proposed changes is to lessen such reliance. To do so, it is believed will eliminate the close ties between a school district's wealth and the quality of education it is able to finance. Such reform would likely make for a more equitable educational system in South Dakota. For indeed there exist considerable variations in school district …

The Existence Of Reversed Digit Addends Modulo N, Lance Adair Wheeler Jan 1974

The Existence Of Reversed Digit Addends Modulo N, Lance Adair Wheeler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most interesting and commonly pursued branches of mathematics is the study of number theory. Its appeal lies not in its applicability, but in a fascination for the properties of the numbers themselves. It should be noted that, on occasion, problems of number theory have contributed to more pragmatic branches of mathematics and hence to a practical application. Frequently this happens without the original author's expectation or intention since he was merely remarking on what he considered to be a singular or unusual facet of the employed number system. Such a problem is that which involves the rearrangement …

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag Jan 1974

Experimental Study Of Noise Propagation In A High Velocity Flow Field, Ismail Tag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of effort has been devoted to the study of noise suppression in the jet engine air intake. Noise suppression by sonic choking is well known, but noise suppression by subsonic choking is less understood. Sound waves generated by the compressor fan are attenuated while travelling upstream in high Mach number flow. The limiting case is when a sonic plane is generated in the inlet. In this case, theoretically speaking, no sound waves can travel through the sonic plane. There are many factors which influence subsonic choking. The nonlinear behavior of the spinning waves generated by the compressor …

A Neoclassical Growth Model With An Environment Sector, Gregory Henry Wagner Jan 1974

A Neoclassical Growth Model With An Environment Sector, Gregory Henry Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current discussions often link economic growth as a causative factor in the increase of pollution. Growth in the economy has a number of causes. These include technological innovation, resource discovery and population growth along with the most widely discussed, investment. Economic growth in its advanced stages can cause severe depletion of raw materials, environmental pollution from energy use, and overtaxing of the environment's capacity to absorb and recycle waste products. A simple solution to growth related pollution would be to reduce the rate of growth and therefore reduce pollution. Herein lies a dilemma. Edwin L. Dole has written that reducing …

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex Jan 1974

Reactions Of Reduced Glutathione With Some Methylated Selenium Compounds, Nancy Wendt Thiex

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium biochemistry has been of general interest since the discovery of selenium as the toxic agent in certain plants, which when ingested by animals causes a definite disease syndrome and even death. Early scientists suggested that the logical place in the body for toxic selenium compounds to attack was at the various sites occupied by sulfur. In 1939 a study was published which indicated that reduced glutathione (GSH), a thiol, protected rats against death from a minimum fatal dose of selenium given as sodium selenite. Since this discovery, the reaction of GSH with various selenium containing compounds has been the …

The Application Of Erts-1 Multispectral Imagery For Crop Resource Evaluation And Inventory, James Lester Heilman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need to provide current information on the condition of our agricultural resources has never been as apparent as at the present time. The world demand for agricultural commodities has caused our agricultural exports to increase. The problem of satisfying worldwide demand and still maintaining adequate food supplies at home requires that up-to-date information on the condition of cur food resources be provided. Information in the past has been furnished by the Agricultural stabilization and Conservation Service and the Crop Reporting Service. This information has been largely historical in nature due to the time required to compile and evaluate it. …

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek Jan 1974

The Decompostion Of Organic Matter In Two Midgrass Prairies In Western South Dakota, Venance H. Lengkeek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All ecosystems have two basic biological components. One component is the autotrophic organisms which fix energy from the sun and use inorganic substances to create food. The other is the heterotrophic organisms which utilize the stored food of the autotrophs, rearrange it, and finally decompose the complex materials into simple inorganic compounds. The autotrophs, which are predominantly green plants, grow wherever the most sunlight is available, heterotrophs predominate wherever organic matter accumulates, primarily in the upper layer of the soil. Heterotrophs consist of consumers which feed on green plants and other organisms. Decomposers, chiefly bacteria and fungi that break down …

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens Jan 1974

Groundwater Quality In Water Supply Wells Surrounding The Sanitary Landfill At Brookings, South Dakota, David C. Odens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1960, the city of Brookings, South Dakota began operating a solid waste disposal site in an abandoned gravel pit approximately two miles south of the city. Because the surrounding residences obtain their water supply from groundwater found in a shallow aquifer in the area, immediate concern was expressed about the effects of the sanity landfill of groundwater quality. In response to the objections to the refuse disposal site raised by-the people in the area, the city of Brookings initiated a study of groundwater quality at the site in 1960. Later, in 1964, a comprehensive study of the groundwater within …

Peroxyacetic Acid Delignification Of Wood And Bark From Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa), Danny C. Ronning Jan 1974

Peroxyacetic Acid Delignification Of Wood And Bark From Ponderosa Pine (Pinus Ponderosa), Danny C. Ronning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ruminant species, which include cattle, sheep and goats, have the unique capability of digesting. cellulose and hemicellulose, the cell-wall carbohydrates that constitute 70 to 80 percent of wood fiber. By their conversion of these higher polysaccharides, which are indigestible by humans and other monogastrics, to animal products the ruminant species offer a potential means for solving the residue disposal problems of the wood industry while concomitantly extending the food supply for human nutrition. The ability of ruminants to digest the cell-wall carbohydrates depends on the microbial digestion that occurs in the reticule-rumen. This organ lies between the esophagus and the …
