The Santa Barbara Public Library: History And Thematic Identifications, Michele Gibney May 2007

The Santa Barbara Public Library: History And Thematic Identifications, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The paper describes the history of the public library in Santa Barbara from 1870 to 1926 while taking into account two of the thematic underpinnings of the American library tradition: women in the profession and the importance of books and libraries in the community. It is divided into three sections including, the importance of books and libraries, women librarianship, and the history of the Santa Barbara Public Library. The library’s ideology and history espouses the themes inherent in American library history. At the same time, some of the qualities of Santa Barbara’s library contradict prevalent ideas of the times—especially in …

Aporias Of Identity: Bicommunalism, Hybridity And The 'Cyprus Problem', Costas M. Constantinou Dec 2006

Aporias Of Identity: Bicommunalism, Hybridity And The 'Cyprus Problem', Costas M. Constantinou

Costas M. Constantinou

This article examines the predicaments and paradoxes of identity politics
in Cyprus. It looks at the historical alliance of colonial practices and
nationalist rationales that brought about a static bicommunal system,
establishing the basis for inter-ethnic conflict, or what became known as
the ‘Cyprus problem’. The advent of modern governmentality, dividing
and classifying the Cypriot population, helped, in addition, to solidify
fluid and ambiguous ethno-religious boundaries, making it more difficult
for individuals to use ethno-religious identities flexibly and pragmatically,
including their use as a tactic to resist the policies of consecutive
regimes of power. The article suggests that the ‘Cyprus problem’ …

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students: Establishment, Accommodation, Neutrality, Or Hostility?, Samuel J. Smith Dec 2006

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students: Establishment, Accommodation, Neutrality, Or Hostility?, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts. The purpose of this article is to clarify religious rights issues …

Walter Beach, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

A variation of these remarks was part of the memorial service I led for Walter at the Southern Political Science and American Political Science Associations after his death, and was published in the Policy Studies Journal and Review of Policy Research. He was my predecessor as President of the Policy Studies Organization and he also was a friend and mentor. We miss him dearly but fortunately he lived long enough to see the PSO move to Washington, only a couple blocks from his office.

Toward Democratic Consolidation? The Argentine Supreme Court, Judicial Independence, And The Rule Of Law, Christopher J. Walker Dec 2005

Toward Democratic Consolidation? The Argentine Supreme Court, Judicial Independence, And The Rule Of Law, Christopher J. Walker

Christopher J. Walker

Too little attention has been paid to the role of judiciary in strengthening democracy and the rule of law in Latin America, with even less attention on the Argentine judicial system. In this paper, the role of the courts in consolidation will be examined through the Argentine case study. Part I outlines the current state of the literature on democratization and the rule of law with respect to Latin America, while Part II reviews what has been written about the Latin American judiciary and its influence on the rule of law. Part III evaluates the development of the judiciary and …

Voluntarismo En Estados Unidos Y El Debate De Robert Putnam, Paul J. Rich Dec 2002

Voluntarismo En Estados Unidos Y El Debate De Robert Putnam, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

Erasing The Face: Solar Control And Shading In Post-War Architecture, William Braham Dec 1999

Erasing The Face: Solar Control And Shading In Post-War Architecture, William Braham

William W. Braham

Sun control and shading constitute the second chapter in the heroic story of the modem wall, of the wall transformed by the new potentials of iron, glass, and reinforced concrete. The development of air conditioning in the 1930s helped ameliorate the overheating problems and facilitated the increased use of glass, but from the beginning of the chapter on glass walls architects sought more expressive means of dealing with the sun and preserving the recognisable qualities of the wall. This essay explores the seminal argument for shading devices developed by the Olgyay brothers in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Mystery Of Mathew Carey, Paul J. Rich Dec 1999

The Mystery Of Mathew Carey, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

The discovery of letters in the archives of the Historical Society in Philadelphia led to new insights into early American publishing and its links with the struggle for Mexican independence. At the center of the story was Mathew Carey, who as a young irishman escaped British authority by going to France, where he met Lafayette and subsequently with a loan from the marquis traveled to America where he established a publishing house that spuriously produced books that were smuggled to Mexico.

Two Strange Things: A Monologue In One Act, Rebecca Saunders Dec 1994

Two Strange Things: A Monologue In One Act, Rebecca Saunders

Rebecca Saunders

An older woman sits pensively in a chair or at a desk in half-light. The stage has a spot light and she looks thoughtfully at it, perhaps tentatively approaching it with arms crossed. Then she takes off her shoes and rolls up her jeans. She puts her hair in two ponytails, like that of a young girl’s. As she does these things, her energy shifts from that of a contemplative older woman to that of a seven-year-old. When the transformation is complete, she moves into the spotlight on stage. The set is like a cartoon or a fantasy; it consists …
