Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes confer a high risk for developing subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD). Persons with MetS constitute 24–34 % of the employee population at Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF), a self-insured healthcare organization. The Baptist Employee Healthy Heart Study (BEHHS) aims to assess the addition of a personalized, interactive, web-based, nutrition-management and lifestyle-management program to the existing health-expertise web platform available to BHSF employees in reducing and/or stabilizing CVD and lifestyle risk factors and markers of subclinical CVD. Methods/design Subjects with MetS or Type II Diabetes will be recruited from an employee population at BHSF and randomized …

A clear understanding of the epidemiology of malaria during Schistosoma co-infection is essential to inform decisions on appropriate control strategies for schistosomiasis and malaria in SSA. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we synthesized evidence on the nature of relationship of S. haematobium and S. mansoni infection with the prevalence/incidence of P. falciparum infection, density of the parasite and related reduction in haemoglobin level among children in SSA. We searched all published articles available in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and CINAHL databases before May 20, 2015 without any language restriction. We found five cross-sectional and seven prospective cohort studies eligible …

Oxidative stress contributes to the development of pulmonary hypertension in experimental models, but this association in humans is unknown. We investigated the relationship between pulmonary artery systolic pressure measured by echocardiography and plasma aminothiol oxidative stress markers, with the hypothesis that oxidative stress will be higher in those with pulmonary hypertension. A group of 347 patients aged 65±12 years from the Emory Cardiovascular Biobank underwent echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction and pulmonary artery systolic pressure. Plasma aminothiols, cysteine, its oxidized form, cystine; glutathione, and its oxidized disulphide (GSSG) were measured and the redox potentials (Eh) of …

The Tongue Drive System (TDS) is a minimally invasive, wireless, and wearable assistive technology (AT) that enables people with severe disabilities to control their environments using tongue motion. TDS translates specific tongue gestures into commands by sensing the magnetic field created by a small magnetic tracer applied to the user’s tongue. We have previously quantitatively evaluated the TDS for accessing computers and powered wheelchairs, demonstrating its usability. In this study, we focused on its qualitative evaluation by people with high-level spinal cord injury who each received a magnetic tongue piercing and used the TDS for 6 wk. We used two …

Nitric Oxide Contributes To Vasomotor Tone In Hypertensive African Americans Treated With Nebivolol And Metoprolol, Robert B. Neuman, Salim Hayek, Joseph C. Poole, Ayaz Rahman, Vivek Menon, Nino Kavtaradze, David Polhemus, Emir Veledar, David J. Lefer, Arshed A. Quyyumi Jan 2018

Nitric Oxide Contributes To Vasomotor Tone In Hypertensive African Americans Treated With Nebivolol And Metoprolol, Robert B. Neuman, Salim Hayek, Joseph C. Poole, Ayaz Rahman, Vivek Menon, Nino Kavtaradze, David Polhemus, Emir Veledar, David J. Lefer, Arshed A. Quyyumi

Endothelial dysfunction is more prevalent in African Americans (AAs) compared with whites. The authors hypothesized that nebivolol, a selective β1 -antagonist that stimulates nitric oxide (NO), will improve endothelial function in AAs with hypertension when compared with metoprolol. In a double-blind, randomized, crossover study, 19 AA hypertensive patients were randomized to a 12-week treatment period with either nebivolol 10 mg or metoprolol succinate 100 mg daily. Forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured using plethysmography at rest and after intra-arterial infusion of acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside to estimate endothelium-dependent and independent vasodilation, respectively. Physiologic vasodilation was assessed during hand-grip exercise. Measurements …

A Ten-Year Comparison Of Women Authorship In U.S. Dermatology Literature, 1999 Vs. 2009, Shali Zhang, Ha-Young Kim, Rachel E.S. Hill, Emir Veledar, Suephy C. Chen Jan 2018

A Ten-Year Comparison Of Women Authorship In U.S. Dermatology Literature, 1999 Vs. 2009, Shali Zhang, Ha-Young Kim, Rachel E.S. Hill, Emir Veledar, Suephy C. Chen

Women are entering medicine at increasing rates, particularly in dermatology. In this study, we compared women’s influence and status in academic dermatology with that of men by examining authorship roles in peer-reviewed dermatology literature.Weexamined the literature in2009 and compared that to10 years prior (1999).Atotal of 1399 articles were reviewed, 594 of whichmet study criteria andwere included in statistical analysis. There was amarked increase in senior female authorship over a decade (22% vs. 38%, p b 0.001). Female first authorship increased as well (41% vs. 51%, p b 0.001). In contrast, changes in male senior and first authorship were not statistically …

Background—Free radical scavengers have failed to improve patient outcomes promoting the concept that clinically important oxidative stress (OS) may be mediated by alternative mechanisms. We sought to examine the association of emerging aminothiol markers of non-free radical mediated oxidative stress with clinical outcomes. Methods and Results—Plasma levels of reduced (cysteine and glutathione) and oxidized (cystine and glutathione disulphide) aminothiols were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography in 1411 patients undergoing coronary angiography (mean age 63 years, male 66%). All patients were followed for a mean of 4.7±2.1 years for the primary outcome of all-cause death (n=247). Levels of cystine (oxidized) …
