Carrying On Traditions, Sharing Knowledge: Communities In Midwestern Families And College Classrooms, Sue Kuykendall

Sabbaticals

Since both of my grandmothers were teachers in one-room schools and both my mother and my father attended one-room schools through the eighth grade, I grew up listening to stories about what it was like to teach and to go to school in these rural educational settings. I think it was these stories, along with the knowledge that I would be carrying on a family tradition, that largely motivated me to choose teaching as my profession. And I've always felt that in some way I was doing that--continuing the work that my grandmothers did and continuing the tradition of small-community …

Nine Gal Tavern, Lenville J. Stelle Jan 2006

Nine Gal Tavern, Lenville J. Stelle

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

The Nine Gal Tavern site (11CH541) is located in western Champaign County, Illinois. Reconnaissance of the locality in 1987 and again in 1991 revealed a complex artifactual assemblage (n=4,875). Historical documentation and the archaeological recovery converge to suggest an evolving site function during the pre-Civil War period. By examining seven sociocultural variables, the pioneer tavern is modeled as passing through three discernable evolutionary stages: the Incidental Tavern, the Incipient Tavern, and the Full Tavern. The first and third of these stages are demonstrated at this site.

Presidential Influences On Civil Rights Visits To The Presidential Libraries, Willie E. Fowler

Sabbaticals

I propose a one semester (Fall 2007) sabbatical study which will be conducted during the academic year of 2007. Though I know most sabbatical leaves are granted for the spring semester of the academic year, I ask for Fall consideration so that I can take advantage of the extra collections that are only made available at the libraries during the Fall Holiday Season. By granting the sabbatical in the Fall of 2007, you would also afford me the ability to experience the oral arguments of the US Supreme Court in October.

Indeed, this sabbatical study will allow me to continue …

Sabbatical Leave Proposal And Report, Ken Urban

Sabbaticals

I plan to use my sabbatical time creating live websites/ databases/ web services for not-for-profit businesses. I plan to create them using the rich variety of different tools I have been teaching. I think it is important that I not only build these sites, but also interact with groups who will be using the sites while building them.

I plan to write a time-based contract with the entities for whom I will consultant pro bono for. Of the many benefits, this will ensure an end for the work, to prevent this from interfering with my future work at Parkland. This …

Axon Guidance Autonomy And Tensional Requirement For Synaptic Function: Is Learning A Forced Response?, Scott Siechen Jan 2006

Axon Guidance Autonomy And Tensional Requirement For Synaptic Function: Is Learning A Forced Response?, Scott Siechen

Natural Science Faculty

Individual neurons extend multiple processes whose growth cones exhibit different responses to their environment. In culture, detached growth cones display guidance autonomy, contain mRNA for cytoskeletal and other axonal components, and are capable of synthesizing protein locally. However, the extent to which growth cone's autonomy contributes to its pathfinding function within the complex in vivo environment is unknown. Here, we show that detached axonal growth cones from identified Drosophila motoneurons maintain balanced filopodial activities as they extend, navigate and target postsynaptic partner cells normally. After detachment, the growth cones continue to synthesize the synaptic vesicle protein Synaptotagmin but, upon contacting …
