Writing And Speaking Persuasively : A Manual For The Professional Animal Protection Advocate, Sandra Renee Delery Jan 1989

Writing And Speaking Persuasively : A Manual For The Professional Animal Protection Advocate, Sandra Renee Delery

Honors Capstones

My Capstone project is the result of my interships with the national alliance for Animals’ Legislation and the law firm of Galvin, Stanley and Hazard. During these interships I was exposed to numerous experiences that, upon my analysis, gave me insight into how to effectively persuade others in reference to animal protection. In addition to my internship experiences, I relied on previous readings and pre-internship experiences to enhance the project. I chose a manual format for easy reader comprehension and reference. The conclusions of my project are as follows: 1: It is necessary for the professional animal protection advocate to …

Paul Volcker's Monetary Policy In Retrospect, Michelle C. Pisut Jan 1989

Paul Volcker's Monetary Policy In Retrospect, Michelle C. Pisut

Honors Capstones

Monetary policy is a key factor in determining the course of economic history. Paul Volcker, who held the office of Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board from 1979-1987, left his mark by adamantly fighting inflation throughout his term. He amply filled his role as an inflation fighter by using tight monetary policy to tame the rampant inflation of the late 1970s. Then he led the country into prosperity by implementing an expansionary policy from mid-1982 until the end of his term, still without re-inflating the economy. He stepped down from his office on 1987, leaving Alan Greenspan to lead perhaps …

Computers are becoming the language of the future. Software currently used and software of the future was investigated. Fifty questionnaires were sent, to the 'Big 8', selected second tier firms, and various companies. The two most popular spreadsheets, word processing, and flowcharting packages were compared to each other. The findings showed Lotus 123 as the best spreadsheet, Flowcharting TT by Patton and Patton as the best flowcharting package, and Wordstar for Word Processing. Northern's Accountancy program is preparing its students for a successful career from a computer standpoint. The survey confirmed that the desireable skills are being taught.

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider Jan 1989

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider

Honors Capstones

In this thesis, I have attempted to describe the arts, music, and literature of the Napoleonic Age. In doing so, I have included England, France, and Germany. In order to understand the mind and manner of Napoleon, I have included historical background and pre-existing styles of this age. In order to fully understand the Napoleonic Age, I found it necessary to include important information about Corsica, Napoleon’s birthplace, Josephine and Marie Louise, Napoleon’s wives, and Napoleon himself. This information helps give the reader a common reference point concerning why Napoleon would act in a certain way. My research included extensive …

Agriculture In Ancient Ugarit And The Old Testament, David Alan Thompson Jan 1989

Agriculture In Ancient Ugarit And The Old Testament, David Alan Thompson

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to examine agriculture as it is found in the literatures of Ugarit and early Israel. Much work has been done in the field of Ugaritic and Old Testament studies which attempts to draw parallels and offer reconstructions of the relationship between the Old Testament and the Ras Shamra texts. This paper does not claim to offer new material in this direction, but rather to classify and analyze existing observations within the parameter of agriculture. This is done in an effort to better understand an aspect that was so fundamental to the experiences of early …

An Analysis Of Consulting And How It Relates To The Modern Accounting Profession, Kristine L. Nudo Jan 1989

An Analysis Of Consulting And How It Relates To The Modern Accounting Profession, Kristine L. Nudo

Honors Capstones

Consulting has not set definition, so I analyzed what it is, and how it relates to accounting. To discover what this mysterious creature is I read dozens of books and articles, along with talking to members of the consulting field in public accounting firms and industry. I found that there is a common misconception about what consulting is. This causes ill feelings about consulting to those who have dealt with "consultants" who really weren't acting as true consultants. Consulting ends with the choosing of a recommendation, but only rarely, with management's approval, actually does the implementing. The ill feelings result …

William Stoecker/Grabill Corporation And Laventhol And Norwath: Bankruptcy Of A Man, His Company, And His Auditors., James J. Lipinski

Honors Capstones

This project explains the bankruptcies of Grabill Corporation, and Laventhol & Horwath (a major accounting firm). William Stoecker formed Grabill Corporation to rehab and resell houses. Grabill Corporation would later start buying operating companies with borrowed money. William Stoecker and his Grabill Corporation eventually borrowed about three-quarters of a billion dollars. Grabill was not financially sound, but they had financial statements audited by Laventhol & Horwath that indicated otherwise. An article in Forbes magazine cast doubt on Stoecker's claims. This made his banks nervous, and they refused to loan him additional funds. With no additional funds, Stoecker missed a loan …

The Problem Of Adequately Defining Numbers, D. Stephan Delong Jan 1989

The Problem Of Adequately Defining Numbers, D. Stephan Delong

Honors Capstones

Natural numbers, although they pervade much of mathematics, are among the most difficult entities for which to provide definitions. Although it is often overlooked, as the efforts of pure mathematics are directed toward the maximization of rigor, the development of sound definitions for numbers can be viewed as one of the most critical objectives of the discipline. This paper is an examination and a support for the efforts in this area of the German logician Gottlob Frege, and in particular of his landmark treatise die Grundlagen der Arithmetik. This work marked the first successful attempt to define numbers through appeal …

The Subject Of Honor As An Element And Interpretive Device In German Literature, John P. Fassola Jan 1989

The Subject Of Honor As An Element And Interpretive Device In German Literature, John P. Fassola

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the subject of honor has been used by various German authors as either a pervasive facet of literary characters or an interpretive device to study the deeper understanding of human existence. The paper studies two different types of works using honor as a theme. In the first section, works are considered which use honor as an overt theme. In the second, the framework of honor is expanded to consider aspects of honor contained in subjects such as compassion and self-actualization. Through library research, I have found facets of honor to be …

Econometric Techniques Applied To The Relationship Between Education And Gnp, Diane S. Sly Jan 1989

Econometric Techniques Applied To The Relationship Between Education And Gnp, Diane S. Sly

Honors Capstones

The goal of this paper was to study the role of government expenditures on education. Data gathered on states’ GNP and their educational budgets were statistically analyzed. Laboratory work, in the analysis of the data, was performed on Superwylbur’s SAS package. Procedures such as the econometric technique of Wiener-Granger’s Causality testing were also implemented. The major finding was that the direction of causation was not in the direction that most studies concluded, ED->GNP. The results showed causation from GNP->ED. The study was limited to six states due to time and knowledge. Readers should not be discouraged by the …

A Descriptive Overview Of The Music Theory Of Paul Hindemith, Bryan M. Miller Jan 1989

A Descriptive Overview Of The Music Theory Of Paul Hindemith, Bryan M. Miller

Honors Capstones

Paul Hindemith devised a harmonic language and music theory designed to better accommodate the tonal expansion of Western music. This work is intended to provide a cohesive presentation of that language. My principal focus during the research was on that of works written by Hindemith himself. Outside interpretations and criticisms of his principles were also included in order to gain a better sense of perspective and to determine to what extent and by what means other scholars have either accepted or rejected his philosophies. I have attempted not only to cover all of the major foundations and innovations of Hindemith’s …

The Role Of Somatomedin In Mediating Ethanol Induced Growth Retardation With Potential Impact On Nursing Practice Related To Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Mary Jean Suriano

Honors Capstones

The effect of ethanol administration on plasma levels of growth hormone (GH) and somatomedin C (IGF-1) was investigated on 26-day-old male and female rats. Ethanol (3gm/kg) was administered IP to 5 male and 5 female rats at ages 24 and 25 days. Saline (10 ml/kg) was administered to 5 male and 5 female control rats on the same days. At age 26 days blood was collected by cardiac puncture at sacrifice. IGF-1 was extracted using C-18 cartridges, and plasma concentrations of GH and IGF-1 levels in ethanol groups compared to the control groups. Lowered plasma levels of IGF-1 may be …

The Effect Of Esops In Banking, Maria T. Garcia Jan 1989

The Effect Of Esops In Banking, Maria T. Garcia

Honors Capstones

My thesis focuses on the agency theory, but more specifically on the effect of employee ownership in banking. The agency theory states that top management is less willing to take large risks if they own stock in the company. My thesis looks at banks that employ Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOPs) and compares them with banks without ESOPs. In my thesis, I measure the amount of risk that banks take with 2 specific financial ratios. The equity ratio measures the amount of risk taken with respect to the bank's capital. The Loan-to-Deposit ratio measures risk with respect to loans as …

The Savings And Loan Crisis, Robert S. Sturgis Iv Jan 1989

The Savings And Loan Crisis, Robert S. Sturgis Iv

Honors Capstones

The Savings and Loan Industry is fighting for its life as one-third of the industry seems to be having serious financial difficulty. The final cleanup cost for the taxpayers has been estimated by Independent analysts to be at least $100 billion. It was the lack of funds that caused the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation to keep the doors of insolvent thrifts open. It was this that seems to be the main reason for the high cost, because by keeping these sick thrifts open and by letting them do the same kind of business that caused them to be …

Translation : A Perspective, Denise Leigh Wiegand Jan 1989

Translation : A Perspective, Denise Leigh Wiegand

Honors Capstones

I have spent the last six months collecting, reading, and translating Spanish poetry. The result of this work is a collection of my favorite Spanish poems. One of the most interesting facts about my “anthology” is the variety within it. The geographic spectrum includes Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Spain. Some poems are a page long, some are sonnets, and a few consist of just two or three lines. Devising a translation process, overcoming a few translation problems, and seeing the final project made my independent study translation project a very rewarding experience. And, as a poet myself, I realized …

Trouble In The Coup : A Cultural Analysis Of The Duck Soup Food Co-Op, Thomas L. Rogers Jan 1989

Trouble In The Coup : A Cultural Analysis Of The Duck Soup Food Co-Op, Thomas L. Rogers

Honors Capstones

The Duck Soup Coup is a large food Co-op in the city of DeKalb which has suffered from the general decline of the health food industry in the last five years. The primary concern of the author was to determine how this economic decline has affected the social fabric of the organization. The author/researcher found that developments within the Coup have generally followed a pattern common to organizations based upon the concepts of participatory democracy. As the Co-op developed, it came slowly to depend on more centralized authority to deal with volatile market forces. Developing faster than the organization bylaws, …

The author of this paper believes that Kuh’s work, with adaptations, could be …

Mexico : The Political Consequences Of Economic Restructuring, Mark Reyes Jan 1989

Mexico : The Political Consequences Of Economic Restructuring, Mark Reyes

Honors Capstones

The 1988 Mexican elections appeared to signal a transition in Mexican politics away from one party rule and toward and open system. This thesis attempts to identify the underlying economic causes of this trend and its likely future course. To analyze Mexican politics, the research included books with background information and contemporary periodical articles to ensure timeliness. The thesis is organized chronologically beginning in the 1970’s and devotes considerable space to the emerging role of opposition groups and the likely course of future events. It was discovered that the opening of the political system is tied to two major variables—economic …

Design And Analysis For Bayesian Approximation Of Solutions To Linear Differential Equations, Karole Herzog Jan 1989

Design And Analysis For Bayesian Approximation Of Solutions To Linear Differential Equations, Karole Herzog

Honors Capstones

The problem we are addressing is that of designing and analyzing experiments for numerically solving linear differential equations of the form: Σ-(i=0)^n [g_i (t) y^((i) ) = h(t)] for all t in a specified domain. In general, for a linear differential equation of the order n, we are given n pieces of information to use as boundary conditions. This information may consist of a boundary condition for y and each derivative of y up to y(n-1); or, we may be given multiple boundary conditions for y and/or any of the (n-1) derivatives, as long as there are n pieces of …

Explanatory Style And Goal Setting, Michele A. Rozhon Jan 1989

Explanatory Style And Goal Setting, Michele A. Rozhon

Honors Capstones

I conducted a longitudinal study to investigate whether the diathesis stress model of learned helplessness could account for differences in goal setting and performance. One week before a midterm exam, 136 college students completed questionnaires measuring explanatory style, threat appraisals, situational constraints, academic ability, level of depression, goal priorities, and academic goals. One week after the midterm exam, course grade goals were measured again and midterm exam scores were obtained. Results suggested modest support for the diathesis-stress model of learned helplessness: 1) Pessimists set lower goals with respect to the exam, but not with respect to course grade, 2) situational …

For the past 100 years the jungles of southern Mexico and Central America have been slowly yielding their secrets of the ancient peoples who had once ruled them. These people, the Maya Indians, are considered to have created one of the major civilizations of the New World. These people grew from the jungle and it is from the jungle that the order of their society is derived. ... In the spring of 1988 preliminary investigations were made of structure 10L-16 in order to determine if it was feasible and worthwhile to begin a large scale investigation of the structure the …
