The work in Growthlines is a collection of ceramic objects that are characterized by floral pattern and their potential for use. I make ceramic work that is functional and designed to be in the home. I think that the way something looks is an integral part of function and I seek to make objects that function well. The surface of my pottery is rich with images of flowers and I hope that the surface both draws in the user and highlights flowers and how important they are for the preservation of the natural world. Driven by a vigorous passion for the ceramic material and its history, I Bloom at Twilight strives to bring attention to craft and construction. To engineer each piece I pull from and distort historical pottery references, lengthening or widening parts of their profile with the form of a flower in mind. By adapting a variety of forming techniques, both ancient to modern, I build vessels adorned with textures that stem from their creation. Inspired by the stunning designs of Soviet Propaganda Porcelain and Nabeshima ware, I apply vibrant glazes in stylized depictions of clouds and flowers. Finally, using wax resist …

Phantasmaticis an exploration of materials and materiality which relies on the concept of the phantasmatic body elucidated in Gayle Salamon’s work Assuming a Body: Transgender and Rhetorics of Materiality. This thesis is an exploration of these ideas. In my work, I use wool and clay to represent the material (known) and phantasmatic (sensed) bodies in an effort to explore an expanded understanding of the body at large. My work is also an effort to expand my own understanding of my phantasmatic body and its relationship to (my) materiality.

Dig, Spin, Repeat, is a body of process based installation objects that uses minimalistic aesthetics placed strategically in the gallery to highlight the architecture of the room. By connecting these unique architectural elements, the work aims to achieve mindfulness similar to the research of Ellen Langer: encouraging active observation. Drawing from my background in sports and factory work, I create multiple repetitive forms out of hand-spun yarn and sourced clay. The room-sized installation objects produced from these raw materials explore the value of staying in the present moment for both the viewer and myself.

During pile installation, the stresses and void ratios in the surrounding soils change significantly, creating large displacements, soil disturbance and the development of excess porewater pressures. The disturbed soils, especially fine grain soils, tend to regain their strength over time due to both the consolidation of the excess porewater pressure and thixotropic behavior of soil particles. In this research, the pile installation process and the subsequent consolidation, the thixotropy and load tests for several test piles were modeled using finite element (FE) model. Costal or shoreline waters are often characterized by high concentrations of suspended cohesive sediments (or clay) affected by varied organic matters (mostly extracellular polymeric substances or exopolymers), salt, and hydrodynamic disturbance. Resulting from the flocculation-disaggregation between the colloidal clay and exopolymer, the size and structure changes of the cohesive sediments are of key importance for understanding sediment transport processes (i.e., settling, breakage, and survivability) and the geotechnical and geophysical properties of the bottom bed. This thesis focuses on the refurbishment of Louisiana State University calibration chamber. The testing equipments were checked and connected together to complete the calibration chamber system. The data acquisition system was upgraded to National Instruments (NI) SCXI system. Therefore, a compatible computer program language in LabVIEW was developed. LabVIEW is a programming language developed by NI that reads the data from the instruments, displays the data in graphical form, calculates the desired parameters, commands the transducer to apply the required pressure to the specimen, and saves the data at the desired frequency. The objectives of this research are to study the structure, morphology and properties of poly(ethylene-oxide) (PEO)-clay nanocomposites using various imaging techniques. Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy are used to image structures on all length scales. Complementary scattering experiments are discussed along with preliminary differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy results. In particular we investigated the multilayered structures of PEO-Laponite and PEO-Montmorillonite multilayered films made from solution. The shear orientation of a polymer-clay network in solution combined with simultaneous solvent evaporation leads to supramolecular multilayer formation in the film. The resulting …

Shear Induced Orientation In Polymer-Clay Solutions And Their Influence On The Structure In Multilayered Films, Matthew Michael Malwitz

The influence of shear on viscoelastic solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and clay (Cloisite, CNA) was investigated by rheology and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) under shear. These measurements determined the shear-induced orientation of the clay and the polymer as well as their relaxation behavior after cessation of shear. Comparison of PEO-CNA solutions (~100 nm diameter platelets) to previously studied PEO-Laponite gels (~30 nm diameter platelets) found that the orientation of CNA platelets occurs at much lower shear rates. Additionally, the relaxation times were much longer for CNA platelets than for Laponite platelets. From these solutions and gels, multilayered nanocomposite …

Researchers at Louisiana State University, LSU, have introduced several petrophysical models expressing the electric properties of shaly sands. These models, to be used for hydrocarbon detection, are based on the Waxman and Smits concept of supplementing the water conductivity with a clay counterions conductivity. The LSU models also utilize the Dual Water theory, which relates each conductivity term to a particular type of water, free and bound, each occupying a specific volume of the total pore space.
