Reform Craft | Re-Form Clay, Katherine Badenhausen
Reform Craft | Re-Form Clay, Katherine Badenhausen
Masters Theses
In an era of rapid globalization, architecture faces the challenge of balancing local cultural identity with global influences. This project explores the critical issue of how the loss of traditional craft is resulting in the erosion of visual identity in architecture. It advocates for an architectural approach that resists the placelessness and rootlessness often seen in modern construction, which frequently results from standardized building practices.
The thesis emphasizes the importance of a deeper engagement with materials and their crafting, highlighting the need for an understanding of local, cultural, and environmental impacts to promote sustainable and meaningful architectural practices. By focusing …
Conspicuous Repair: Drawing Attention To Brokenness In Public Landscapes, Ashley Pedersen
Conspicuous Repair: Drawing Attention To Brokenness In Public Landscapes, Ashley Pedersen
Masters Theses
Repair, as a design provocation, encourages material conservation, hands-on engagement with materiality, and evaluation of maintenance routines all of which contribute to a model of sustainability that values a circular economy and degrowth. Through visible repairs that focus our ongoing attention on brokenness, repair has the potential to illuminate, and start to address the systemic causes of brokenness. In this way, repair can be a catalyst for increased stewardship of a place.
Conspicuous Repair: Drawing Attention to Brokenness in Public Landscapes investigates clay as a suitable material for the repair of masonry in urban landscapes which has the potential, through …
Thickness Of Place: Urban Stratigraphy And Rammed Earth Construction In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Alexandra Goodenough
Thickness Of Place: Urban Stratigraphy And Rammed Earth Construction In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Alexandra Goodenough
Masters Theses
How can people connect with a place through a new understanding of its stratigraphy? In urban environments, there is an inherent separation between people and the ground beneath us. We experience our landscapes solely through what is visible on the surface, and lack an understanding of the complex underground strata which create the world around us. Too often, landscape architecture contributes to this dissociation through superficial designs which mask the history of a site, bury its internal workings, and rely on global materials, resulting in landscapes which lack a sense of place and strain the planet's resources. In order to …
Revitalizing Decay, Owen Carey
Revitalizing Decay, Owen Carey
Masters Theses
Revitalizing Decay focuses to reimagine brick design, diverging from the conventional standardized brick, to introduce a crafted brick integrated with flora. Through the exploration of innovative sustainable solutions, this research aims to breathe new life into buildings facing advanced decay by embedding flora within the very structure of the brick. Buildings slotted for demolition typically go through a long process of approvals, signatures, etc. This thesis also aims to address the long process and instead pose an intervention that would streamline a typical demolition plan. With a primary focus on enhancing air quality, ensuring cost efficiency, and offering a temporary …
Exploring The Versatility Of Clay In Double Curvature Surface Formation, Yicheng Zhang
Exploring The Versatility Of Clay In Double Curvature Surface Formation, Yicheng Zhang
Masters Theses
This thesis aims to investigate the efficacy of clay in shaping double- curved surfaces. In conventional interior design practices, Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) is commonly employed to craft sculptural elements on surfaces such as ceilings and walls. However, despite its efficiency, GRG is not environmentally sustainable. As an excellent material for creating indoor curved surfaces, GRG, offers the advantages of easy construction and high efficiency. However, during the demolition process, the inclusion of glass fibers makes the recycling process very complicated. It is difficult to separate these materials for recycling, which ultimately leads to a significant amount of construction waste.
Additionally, …
Strange Stranger: A Visceral Skin Glaze Exploration Into The Neurodivergent Sensory Experience, Sam J. Lucas
Strange Stranger: A Visceral Skin Glaze Exploration Into The Neurodivergent Sensory Experience, Sam J. Lucas
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
Sam Lucas
Sam creates ambiguous figurative objects predominantly in clay. Her creative practice draws on her experience of being a neurodivergent woman today, by exploring aspects of her own unique neurotype.
The visceral glaze exploration pieces were the precursor to the final forms for her body of work called ‘Strange stranger’ where she is exploring the weight and awkwardness of being in the body, the pain this alienation can cause, and ironically the beauty and humour that results from this diversity.
The surfaces of the pieces were attempting to describe the interoceptive, exteroceptive and alexithymic confusion that can occur at …

To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton
To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton
Graduate Theses
This thesis is an exploration of memory’s fluctuating aspects, utilizing natural materials and casting processes to create a sculptural body of work deeply rooted in materialized metaphor. Examining the relationship between mold and cast, part and whole, and interior and exterior, I utilize casting as a framework to understand the duality of remembering and forgetting. Memories, much like the natural landscape, are ephemeral, fading, and fracturing over time. Both external environments and internal mental landscapes share the common language of erosion, existing as present or absent, remembered or forgotten. Conestee Nature Preserve in Mauldin, South Carolina, serves as my “site” …

Permutations, Casey Beck
Permutations, Casey Beck
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
I make pottery not only out of a passion for my material, clay, and for the complex processes of wheel throwing and atmospheric firing, but also out of a passion for living with, using, and sharing handmade objects. For me, using pottery daily is an act of celebration. My philosophy of making pots comes in part from the particular history of utilitarian pottery that has developed over the last sixty years in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, where I went to school and began my career as a potter. More recently, the form language that I employ in my work has …
Or To Be Eaten Alive, Christopher Williams
Or To Be Eaten Alive, Christopher Williams
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
“or to be eaten alive'' is a multimedia exhibition in which I merge my own coming of age story with a mythological ecology. In this work I reclaim my queer identity by communing with my past selves in a fantasy world created through the lens of Queer Ecology and Queer Eco-Futurism. The visuals in this exhibition obscure reality. They are abstractions of the landscapes I occupy—particularly the Tallgrass prairie and Ozark ecoregions. Through a speculative, fantasy world the exhibition introduces moments of adoration, death, fracturing, growth, joy, and failure. I form, draw, color and arrange the work embracing mistakes and …

Silhouette, Andy Bissonnette
Silhouette, Andy Bissonnette
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
As a potter, I am deeply interested in the union between form, surface, and function. I believe these elements are intrinsically connected and the most successful pots are able to balance all three in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. From the proportional relationship between the foot and rim, to the way a glaze breaks or pools across an articulated surface, each detail is crafted with intention and care. Silhouette is a metaphor for how I conceptualize and conceive each of my pieces. It’s a way to explore form through both an aesthetic and practical approach. My …

The Vertic Clay Flora Of The San Joaquin Desert: Niche, Competition & Floral Mosaics On A Novel Substrate, Emma R. Fryer
The Vertic Clay Flora Of The San Joaquin Desert: Niche, Competition & Floral Mosaics On A Novel Substrate, Emma R. Fryer
Master's Theses
Plant communities that occur on edaphically heterogeneous landscapes are ideal systems for exploring questions of niche and community assembly. Species with affinity for harsh substrates often have well-defined edaphic niches and are ideal models for testing ecological and evolutionary theory. While plants on substrates such as serpentine and gypsum have received much attention, those on other harsh substrates, including on vertic clay soils, have gone unstudied. Vertic clay soils are both chemically and physically challenging to plant establishment and productivity. Plant communities associated with vertic clay soils of the San Joaquin Desert appear to have a distinctive mosaic pattern of …

Welcome To The Sitting Garden At The Busy Hands Museum, Stacie Sabady
Theses and Dissertations
I wanted to attend VCU to learn how to unravel my mind and find the words to describe it. While I did make progress in that area, my surprise discovery is that I need to unravel my body too. It has become unbalanced from years of neglect. When working, I find solace through escape. I find a positive outlet for my perfectionist tendencies. I find a way to visually illustrate my obsessive qualities. Throughout the years of these findings, I have ignored my body pleading with me to take it easy. I have always honored the materials and the tools, …

Sin With Me, Nicholas Kakavas
Sin With Me, Nicholas Kakavas
Art and Design Theses
For my thesis exhibition, Sin With Me, I have created a series of statues that physically manifest my sexual fantasies. These sculptures expose my erotic imaginings, bringing heightened visibility to issues surrounding the repression of queer love and gay sex. With states banning public school teachers from even discussing LGBTQ+ content, it is more important than ever to normalize homosexuality and make visible these taboos that persist in American society. I am doing my part to challenge these attitudes. Sin With Me is a modern gay narrative built for everyone.
