Quality Of Care: Analyzing The Relationship Between Hospital Quality Score And Total Hospital Costs, Jordan Andrew Newell Jan 2013

Quality Of Care: Analyzing The Relationship Between Hospital Quality Score And Total Hospital Costs, Jordan Andrew Newell

LSU Master's Theses

As healthcare costs and premiums have increased in the recent past, hospitals are forced to try to provide healthcare on tight budgets. In many cases, quality is often sacrificed in an effort to manage patient wait-times and costs. This research attempted to add to the existing body of knowledge of quality of care by defining a relationship between quality of care provided and total hospital costs. This study used the 2006 American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey Database and the 2006 Hospital Compare dataset to meet the data requirements for the study. A log-log, as well as a translog, cost function …

Influence Of "Added" Whey Protein Isolate On Probiotic Properties Of Yogurt Culture Bacteria And Yogurt Characteristics, Luis Alfonso Vargas Lopez Jan 2013

Influence Of "Added" Whey Protein Isolate On Probiotic Properties Of Yogurt Culture Bacteria And Yogurt Characteristics, Luis Alfonso Vargas Lopez

LSU Master's Theses

Consumers are becoming conscious of their diet, increasing protein intake and avoiding carbohydrates and fats. Whey proteins have branch chain amino acids responsible for muscle building. Whey protein isolate (WPI) contains more than 90% protein. The effect of incremental addition of WPI on probiotic characteristics of pure cultures and cultures in yogurt and yogurt characteristics are not known. The hypothesis was that “added” WPI will influence the characteristics of yogurt culture bacteria in pure form and in yogurt. The objectives were: to determine the influence of added WPI on (1) acid and bile tolerance, growth and protease activity of pure …

Alexandre Iacovleff : "Exotic Academicism" In Europe And America, (1914-1938), Kara Blanken Jan 2013

Alexandre Iacovleff : "Exotic Academicism" In Europe And America, (1914-1938), Kara Blanken

LSU Master's Theses

Art historians often refer to the interwar period of the early twentieth century as la retour à l’ordre. The twenty-one years from 1918 to 1939 represent a return to sober academicism, order, and classicism in art following the destruction and uncertainty caused by the First World War. This mentality of artistic “stability,” combined with the Western fascination for exotic cultures of Africa and Asia, formed the hallmarks of the Art Déco style. Alexandre Iacovleff was a Russian artist who embodied the international artistic spirit of Art Déco from 1914 until his death in 1938. His paintings and drawings, rendered in …

Uncertainty Quantification Of Film Cooling Effectiveness In Gas Turbines, Hessam Babaee Jan 2013

Uncertainty Quantification Of Film Cooling Effectiveness In Gas Turbines, Hessam Babaee

LSU Master's Theses

In this study the effect of uncertainty of velocity ratio on jet in crossflow and particual- rly film cooling performance is studied. Direct numerical simulations have been combined with a stochastic collocation approach where the parametric space is discretized using Multi-Element general Polynomial Chaos (ME-gPC) method. Velocity ratio serves as a bifurcation parameter in a jet in a crossflow and the dynamical system is shown to have several bifurcations. As a result of the bifurcations, the target functional is observed to have low-regularity with respect to the paramteric space. In that sense, ME-gPC is particularly effective in discretizing the parametric …

Measuring Soluble Salts In Soils Via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Samantha Lynn Swanhart Jan 2013

Measuring Soluble Salts In Soils Via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Samantha Lynn Swanhart

LSU Master's Theses

Soil scientists have been using the same quantification methods for soluble salts for decades. Yet they have long struggled with an effective method for quantifying gypsum content, because current methods are fraught with problems. Saline soil has been historically defined as soil containing salts more soluble than gypsum (e.g., various combinations of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Cl-, SO42-, HCO3- and CO32-) to the extent that soil fertility is severely reduced across a wide array of climates and geological settings. Since salinity is not germane to specific soil characteristics such as texture or parent material, it can be challenging to predict …

Insulin Secretagogue Activity Of Ellagic Acid-Rich Muscadine (Vitis Rotundifolia) And Indian Gooseberry (Emblica Officinalis) Extracts On Pancreatic Beta Cells, Srikanth Earpina Jan 2013

Insulin Secretagogue Activity Of Ellagic Acid-Rich Muscadine (Vitis Rotundifolia) And Indian Gooseberry (Emblica Officinalis) Extracts On Pancreatic Beta Cells, Srikanth Earpina

LSU Master's Theses

Diabetes is an inflammatory disease associated with hyperglycemia. Chronic exposure of pancreatic â-cells to glucolipotoxicity stimulates a low-grade inflammation associated with the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1â (IL-1â). Increased levels of IL-1â can initially lead to decreased insulin secretion and finally â-cell death. Ellagic acid and quercetin have been reported to be anti-inflammatory in several studies. Vitis rotundifolia (muscadine) or Emblica officinalis (amla) are good sources of ellagic acid and quercetin. Ellagic acid or quercetin is bioavailable as is or are metabolized into bioavailable urolithins or isorhamnetin, respectively. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect …

Discrimination Of Sexual Minorities And Plans To Relocate, Margaret H. Smith Jan 2013

Discrimination Of Sexual Minorities And Plans To Relocate, Margaret H. Smith

LSU Master's Theses

LGBTQ individuals make relocation decisions with their sexual orientation and gender identity in mind (Gorman-Murray, 2007). The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between non-violent discrimination faced by LGBTQ individuals and whether or not those individuals have future plans to relocate. A literature review of LGBTQ discrimination and LGBTQ relocation is discussed, and a secondary data analysis was conducted on a sample of LGBTQ individuals who participated in a quality-of-life survey. All hypotheses were supported except the hypothesis that analyzed anti-LGBTQ discrimination and its association with time until relocation. Results indicated that experiencing anti-LGBTQ nonviolent discrimination was …

Synthesis Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Scaffolds From Dioxane/Ethanol Using Control Rate Freezing And Study Of Its Microstructural Properties, George Idicula Jan 2013

Synthesis Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Scaffolds From Dioxane/Ethanol Using Control Rate Freezing And Study Of Its Microstructural Properties, George Idicula

LSU Master's Theses

Bio-degradable poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffolds were prepared by using thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. A solution of PLLA-Dioxane was formed by dissolving PLLA in dehydrated 1,4-Dioxane at three wt/vol percentages, specifically 3, 7 and 10%. This PLLA-Dioxane solution was then frozen in borosilicate glass vials (5mL) at three cooling rates (1, 10 and 40 ˚C/min) in a commercially available controlled rate freezer (CRF). The frozen solution was freeze-dried to sublimate the Dioxane. The microstructural properties of the resulting PLLA scaffolds were determined utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images and uni- axial compressive testing. The relationship between the wt/vol …

Impacts And Recovery Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Vegetation Structure And Function Of Phragmites Australis, Chad Robert Judy

LSU Master's Theses

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on the common reed Phragmites australis, and the processes controlling species effects and recovery, via a greenhouse mesocosm study. In the greenhouse DWH source oil, weathered approximately 40% by weight and emulsified, was applied to the aboveground shoots of P. australis growing in marsh sods to produce the following treatment-levels: (1) oil coverage of the lower 30% of shoot-height, (2) the lower 70% of shoot-height, (3) repeated oil coverage of the lower 70% of shoot-height, (4) 100% oil coverage of shoots, (5) …

Soil Organic Carbon Determination For Louisiana Soils Via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Sara Kathryn Nuss Jan 2013

Soil Organic Carbon Determination For Louisiana Soils Via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Sara Kathryn Nuss

LSU Master's Theses

As scientists work to investigate the mechanisms underlying the depletion of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems, there has been an urgent call for the development of test methods that offer reduced analysis times for soil organic carbon (SOC) determinations. Traditional laboratory techniques can be time-consuming and costly, making high-volume sample analyses problematic. Portable x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (PXRF) provides quantitative, multi-elemental data for soil samples in as little as 60 seconds; and, unlike other spectroscopic methods, differences in elemental concentrations between field-moist and oven-dry samples are considered to be negligible when soil moisture contents are less than 20%, by weight. This study …
