Incorporating Science-Based Approaches Into The Rapid Assessment Of Wetlands And Streams : Validation, Restoration Trajectory, And Method Development, Jacob Franklin Berkowitz
Incorporating Science-Based Approaches Into The Rapid Assessment Of Wetlands And Streams : Validation, Restoration Trajectory, And Method Development, Jacob Franklin Berkowitz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Human alterations within wetlands and streams have resulted in a decrease in ecological functions and associated benefits to society. The scientific literature highlights the functional benefits provided by ecosystems including flood protection, nutrient cycling, and habitat maintenance. Additionally, legislation and regulatory policy require mitigation and restoration as compensation for declines in ecological functions. As a result, the need for practical, repeatable, and technically sound ecosystem assessment methods remains essential to natural resource management. However, few studies determine the validity of rapid assessment approaches by applying quantitative parameters, especially with respect to biogeochemical functions. We assessed biogeochemical functions applied to restored …
Consistency Between Earnings Forecasts And Stock Recommendations : The Effect Of Political Connections, Elio Alfonso
Consistency Between Earnings Forecasts And Stock Recommendations : The Effect Of Political Connections, Elio Alfonso
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Financial analysts’ earnings forecasts are more consistent with stock recommendations when their earnings forecasts are more accurate (Loh and Mian 2006, Ertimur et al. 2007). This suggests that analysts use other information in their private valuation models in addition to earnings forecasts especially when earnings have greater uncertainty. Recent studies show that political connections are important for firm valuation and are associated with future positive returns and future positive operating performance (Faccio 2006, Cooper et al. 2010). In this study, I examine how a firm’s political connections affect stock recommendation informativeness as well as the efficiency with which analysts translate …

Molecular Products From The Thermal Degradation Of Selected Tobacco Components: Lignin, Tyrosine, Glutamic Acid, And Modeling Of Lignin Pyrolysis Using Chemkin Combustion Suite, Joshua Kiprotich Kibet
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study explores the thermal decomposition behavior of selected tobacco components: lignin, tyrosine, and glutamic acid using the system for thermal diagnostic studies (STDS) in an in-line gas chromatography-mass spectrometer analytical technique. The pyrolysis conditions employed in this study were a flowing atmosphere of nitrogen and 4% O2 in nitrogen at a residence time of 0.2 seconds for a total pyrolysis time of 3 minutes. The results identified common relationships between the two modes of reaction atmospheres, as well as some differences. While some products were favored by an inert regime, some were favored under an oxidative regime. Oxidative pyrolysis …
Poultry Litter Ash As A Phosphorus Source For Greenhouse Crop Production, Daniel Evan Wells
Poultry Litter Ash As A Phosphorus Source For Greenhouse Crop Production, Daniel Evan Wells
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all life forms, including plants, but is a limited agricultural resource whose future availability is in question. Therefore, identification of alternative forms of P fertilizers is important. Poultry litter ash (PLA), a byproduct of bioenergy production, contains high concentrations of P comparable to conventional fertilizers. Forms of P contained in PLA have been characterized as having low water solubility. Nutrient losses during containerized plant production are high due to excessive inputs of water and nutrients and low nutrient sorption capacities of common horticultural substrate components. Environmental concerns over reduced water quality intensify this …
Evolutionary Assembly Of The Neotropical Montane Avifauna, Andres M. Cuervo
Evolutionary Assembly Of The Neotropical Montane Avifauna, Andres M. Cuervo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Three fundamental processes are thought to underlie biodiversity patterns: speciation, dispersal, and extinction. Biodiversity patterns in species-rich tropical mountains vary along horizontal (barriers), and vertical (elevation) dimensions. In this dissertation, I set out to explore the interplay between historical and ecological mechanisms hypothesized to shape diversification of Neotropical cloud forest birds. In the second chapter, I conducted comparative analyses using species-specific ecological traits, and 3,175 mtDNA sequences collected across the range of 45 co-distributed birds. First, I found that niche breadth, dispersal ability, and clade age influence lineage diversity (population differentiation). In particular, species that are old, poor dispersers, and …

The Investigation Of Valve Operators' Torque Production Capabilities And Optimal Handwheel Height, Angle, And Opening Technique, Saif K. Al-Qaisi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research consists of two projects concerned with handwheel-valve operations. The objectives of poject-1 were to: (1) introduce an ergonomically-modified valve-wrench and compare it to conventional valve-opening methods, in terms of efficiency (time to open valve), perceived physical exertion (Borg-scale), and muscle loading of shoulder and trunk muscles; and (2) determine whether the torque setting (15 Nm and 30 Nm) of the valve affects the preferred valve-opening method. Four methods were evaluated, including using bare hands (BH), conventional wrench-restricted (CW-R, assumes presence of obstructions), conventional wrench-unrestricted (CW-U, assumes no obstructions), and modified wrench (MW). Electromyography (EMG) activities were measured from …

Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The three studies in this dissertation were posed with the common goal of revealing possible explanations for variations in the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence across regional cultures of the United States. Study 1 posed and tested two hypotheses related to the distribution of male-perpetrated intimate partner homicide across regions of the United States. The South and West, two regions characterized in full (the South) or in part (the West) by honor cultures, emerged as the regions with the highest rates of argument- and conflict- related, male-on-female intimate partner homicides in single victim/single offender incidents. Explanations provided at the …
Uncovering Nodes In The Transnational Social Networks Of Hispanic Workers, James Powell Chaney
Uncovering Nodes In The Transnational Social Networks Of Hispanic Workers, James Powell Chaney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the little studied but socially salient processes through which Latino migrant laborers find work, travel, and obtain documentation using transnational social networks spanning between their places of origin and destinations in the United States. This project focuses on the creation and maintenance of these transnational linkages with a particular interest in their expansion into locations throughout American South, the region with the highest growth rates of Hispanic populations. The aim is to understand how such migrant-labor processes influence migratory patterns and result in place creation, both in these case studies and more generally. The case studies in …

Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen
Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis we try to understand the unconventional superconducting mechanism on cuprates and organic superconductors (or sodium cobaltates) which can be modeled by a two-dimensional square- and triangular-lattice Hubbard model respectively. The formation of the superconducting dome requires explanations of feasible scenarios. Generally speaking, pairing strength is provided by magnetic fl_x001D_uctuations in the strongly correlated region and the structure of the Fermi surface in this region will favor superconducting pairings with a certain type of symmetry. For the cuprate physics, a superconducting dome composed of d-wave pairings has been identified experimentally. We study the Hubbard model on square lattices …
The Role Of Trust In Neighborhood Recovery: Examinations From New Orleans’ Recovery From Hurricane Katrina, David Traweek Maddox
The Role Of Trust In Neighborhood Recovery: Examinations From New Orleans’ Recovery From Hurricane Katrina, David Traweek Maddox
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes and helps delineate the circumstances under which different kinds of trust influenced neighborhood recovery in the Greater New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina. These analyses provide insights into the effects of neighborhood levels of social capital, organizational capacity, particularized racial trust and generalized trust on the mean level of household recovery in Orleans and St. Bernard Parish neighborhoods. Results suggest that neighborhood organizational capacity and several measures of neighborhood social capital had direct and positive effects on neighborhood recovery and that the effects of generalized trust on neighborhood recovery are not fixed and that neighborhood organizational capacity …
Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas
Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The overarching goal of this project is to argue that folk punk performances offer spaces where a listening audience is exposed to a radical and intersectional politics, and enable that audience to identify with those views. By considering the performances of Inky Skulls, Pussy Riot!, and Against Me!, this study looks to the ways in which these folk punk exemplars highlight elements of the radical politics of the American left and in the history of folk and punk music. In particular, this project considers the intersections of race and class, women and nonhuman animals, and queerness and anarchism, as intersecting …

Socially Oriented Negative Self-Referent Cognition : The Development And Validation Of A Measure, Brittany Moree Rudy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Social phobia, a debilitating disorder among children and adolescents, is thought to be made up of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological components. However, in children, the cognitive component of this disorder has been largely neglected by researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to create and validate a new instrument, the "Socially Oriented Negative Anxious Statement (SONAS) scale,” that assesses socially oriented negative self-referent cognition in a younger population. Measurement validation procedures including, reliability, validity, and factor analysis, were utilized to examine the proposed questionnaire. Results indicated that the SONAS scale demonstrated good psychometric properties, including a sound two-factor structure …
Optimizing Peak Gust And Maximum Sustained Wind Speed Estimates From Mid-Latitude Wave Cyclones, Timothy Andrew Joyner
Optimizing Peak Gust And Maximum Sustained Wind Speed Estimates From Mid-Latitude Wave Cyclones, Timothy Andrew Joyner
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wind storms cause significant damage and economic loss and are a major recurring threat in many countries. Maximum sustained and peak gust weather station data from multiple historic wind storms occurring over more than three decades across Europe were analyzed to identify storm tracks, intensities, and areas of frequent high wind speeds. Wind surfaces for maximum sustained and peak gust winds were estimated based on an anisotropic (directionally-dependent) kriging interpolation methodology. Overall, wind speed magnitudes and high intensity locations were identified accurately for each storm. Directional trends and wind swaths were also consistently located in appropriate locations based on known …

Potential Influence Of Blueberry And Black Raspberry Pomace Phenolics On Inflammatory Cytokines In Coronary Cells, Adriana Soto Rodriguez Gil
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Elevated free fatty acids (FFAs) in obesity are known risk factors associated with chronic inflammatory conditions including cardiovascular inflammation and thus cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the US. Anthocyanins from berries have the potential to provide protection against inflammation in various tissues; however they are poorly absorbed and undergo major transformations by the microbiome. The work presented in this dissertation involves the development and utilization of an in vitro model to characterize the products of colonic fermentation and absorption of blueberry and black raspberry pomace phenolics, and evaluate the potential efficacy of these products compared to …
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In large databases, there may exist critical nuggets - small collections of records or instances that contain domain-specific important information. This information can be used for future decision making such as labeling of critical, unlabeled data records and improving classification results by reducing false positive and false negative errors. In recent years, data mining efforts have focussed on pattern and outlier detection methods. However, not much effort has been dedicated to finding critical nuggets within a data set. This work introduces the idea of critical nuggets, proposes an innovative domain-independent method to measure criticality, suggests a heuristic to reduce the …

Molecular Dynamics Of Interfacial Phenomena At Air/Ice, Air/Water, And Air/Salt Water Interfaces, Thilanga Prabhash Liyana Arachchi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to investigate the adsorption of organic contaminants, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and green leaf volatiles (GLVs), as well as their interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROSs) on atmospheric air/water and air/ice interfaces. In another series of projects, we studied several intermediate and semi-volatile organic compounds from oil (IVOCs and SVOCs, e.g., alkanes with 17-31 carbon atoms), surfactants and dispersants at air/salt water interfaces. These simulations are relevant to understand the fate of these compounds during the recent 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. The adsorption of gas-phase aromatics (benzene, naphthalene and phenanthrene), ROSs …
Framework Of Damage Detection In Vehicle-Bridge Coupled System And Application To Bridge Scour Monitoring, Xuan Kong
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Most vibration-based damage identification methods make use of measurements directly from bridge structures with attached sensors. However, the vehicle moving on the bridge can serve as both an active actuator and a response receiver. This dissertation aimed to develop new methodologies to eventually detect bridge damages such as scour using the dynamic response of the vehicle. To reach the final objective, a framework of damage identification was developed first, which gave a guideline on the three crucial steps for damage detection. An optimization method was proposed that combines the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the First Order (FO) method. It has …

A Study Of The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Ichthyoplankton And Post-Larval Penaeids Recruiting Into A Louisiana Tidal Pass, Matthew John Kupchik
A Study Of The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Ichthyoplankton And Post-Larval Penaeids Recruiting Into A Louisiana Tidal Pass, Matthew John Kupchik
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation attempts to better understand astronomical, meteorological, and oceanographic forcing of offshore-spawned, estuarine-dependent species from continental shelf to estuarine waters through tidal passes. The vertical distribution of zoo-/ichthyoplankton within the inner continental shelf from the Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform monitoring project (1978-1995) provided an important offshore end member for the estuarine recruitment study, and is potentially useful in predicting vulnerabilities to past and future oil spills. The role that atmospheric cold front passages may have on densities and movement of zoo-/ichthyoplankton recruiting through the Bayou Tartellan tidal pass, Louisiana, were analyzed using a Generalized Additive Model. The pre-frontal phase, …
Interpreting Racial Politics: Black And Mainstream Press Web Site Tea Party Coverage, Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii
Interpreting Racial Politics: Black And Mainstream Press Web Site Tea Party Coverage, Benjamin Rex Lapoe Ii
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to understand the cultural meanings of the black and mainstream press’ online interpretations of the tea party. Little research exists on the modern black press; what does exist shows that unless the story is about race, the black press mirrors the mainstream press. To my knowledge, no research exists comparing the two presses on a racial issue in an online environment. This dissertation will fill that hole. The tea party narrative was, and continues to be, an intricate story for journalists to tell. Resonant myth offers interpretative templates for journalists to use for crafting cultural meaning while …
Optimal Consignment Stocking Policies For A Supply Chain Under Different System Constraints, Hui Zhi Yi
Optimal Consignment Stocking Policies For A Supply Chain Under Different System Constraints, Hui Zhi Yi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The research aims are to enable the decision maker of an integrated vendor-buyer system under Consignment Stock (CS) policy to make the optimal/sub-optimal production/replenishment decisions when some general and realistic critical factors are considered. In the system, the vendor produces one product at a finite rate and ships the outputs by a number of equal-sized lots within a production cycle. Under a long-term CS agreement, the vendor maintains a certain inventory level at the buyer’s warehouse, and the buyer compensates the vendor only for the consumed products. The holding cost consists of a storage component and a financial component. Moreover, …
Patterns And Pathways Of Wetland Sedimentation And Landscape Change In Coastal Louisiana, Andrew William Tweel
Patterns And Pathways Of Wetland Sedimentation And Landscape Change In Coastal Louisiana, Andrew William Tweel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Coastal Louisiana wetlands exist in a dynamic physical environment and retracted dramatically in the last century. Here I examine the spatial and temporal variability of this landscape with an emphasis on the interactions between anthropogenic landscape modifications and geological processes.
The Mississippi River watershed underwent drastic changes during the past 200 years, beginning with widespread land clearing and, later, large-scale reservoir construction. These modifications caused increases in suspended sediment concentrations, then sharp decreases, and have remained relatively stable since 1960. I show how changes in land area of the Mississippi River birdfoot delta reflect these fluctuations, and that they are …
Challenging Behaviors In Autism Spectrum Disorders : Differences Across Childhood And The Relationship With Autism Symptomatology, Alison Marie Kozlowski
Challenging Behaviors In Autism Spectrum Disorders : Differences Across Childhood And The Relationship With Autism Symptomatology, Alison Marie Kozlowski
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Challenging behaviors (CBs) are remarkably prevalent in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and can have a number of severe consequences. While it is believed that CBs reach their peak in childhood followed by a general abatement throughout adolescence and adulthood, the exact trend of CBs during childhood is unknown. Furthermore, the impact of changes in autism symptomatology on CBs during childhood has seldom been explored despite a positive correlation between autism symptomatology and CBs having been established. Therefore, the purpose of these studies was to determine where significant differences in both autism symptomatology and CBs occur throughout childhood, and …
Improving Routines : Self-Monitoring By Adolescents Diagnosed With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Meghan Ann Geary
Improving Routines : Self-Monitoring By Adolescents Diagnosed With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Meghan Ann Geary
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), though commonly diagnosed in childhood, continues to present with problematic symptoms through adolescence and adulthood (Barkley, Fischer, Edelbrock, & Smallish, 1990; Young & Amarasinghe, 2010). Despite the number of adolescents suffering from ADHD and the detrimental effects the symptoms can have on their lives, there is a paucity of research in interventions tailored to this population (Young & Amarasinghe, 2010). Additionally, an even smaller portion of this research addresses daily routines for adolescents, despite findings that maintaining routines are often very difficult for adolescents with ADHD (Bloomquist, 2005; Coghill et al., 2008; Pfiffner et al. 2007; Robin, …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this body of work was to gain a clearer understanding of the potential cognitive factors that may contribute to Specific Language Impairment (SLI). This study attempted to simulate a performance profile of SLI in typically developing children within a grammaticality judgment task, featuring structures historically difficult (third person singular –S and auxiliary BE) and easy (plural –S and progressive –ING) for individuals with SLI. Cognitive load was manipulated through the length of the sentences to be judged, and individual differences in phonological short term memory (PSTM) and working memory were measured (WM). For a successful simulation to …
An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Returned Mormon Missionaries, Errol Douglas Bordelon
An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Returned Mormon Missionaries, Errol Douglas Bordelon
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mormon missionaries face numerous challenges throughout the course of their mission. They serve in multiple capacities; they provide numerous types of services; and they work an average of 12 hours a day, six days a week. Missionaries encounter nearly constant rejection and hostility. In most cases, these missionaries serve in areas that are unfamiliar to them and they have limited contact with their family and friends. Despite these challenges, most missionaries not only successfully complete their mission, but they also have a positive view of their mission. According to Bjorck and Kim (2009), not much research has been conducted in …
A Hybrid Framework Of Iterative Mapreduce And Mpi For Molecular Dynamics Applications, Shuju Bai
A Hybrid Framework Of Iterative Mapreduce And Mpi For Molecular Dynamics Applications, Shuju Bai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Developing platforms for large scale data processing has been a great interest to scientists. Hadoop is a widely used computational platform which is a fault-tolerant distributed system for data storage due to HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) and performs fault-tolerant distributed data processing in parallel due to MapReduce framework. It is quite often that actual computations require multiple MapReduce cycles, which needs chained MapReduce jobs. However, Design by Hadoop is poor in addressing problems with iterative structures. In many iterative problems, some invariant data is required by every MapReduce cycle. The same data is uploaded to Hadoop file system in …
