Anne Spencer: A Conventional, Yet Unconventional, Harlem Renaissance Poet, John C. Anstey
Anne Spencer: A Conventional, Yet Unconventional, Harlem Renaissance Poet, John C. Anstey
Theses & Honors Papers
A look inside the background of African-American poet, Anne Spencer, and her endeavor to write about racism and female mistreatment. Outside of writing, Anne and her husband were the first to employ a NAACP office in their native city of Lynchburg. Spencer was a writer for the “underdog” but was not afraid to step up to the challenges life, and society, posed at her.
Probation Policies, Corrections Laws, And Sentencing Guidelines Systems: An Application Of Weber's And Ritzer's Typologies, Edward G. Simmons, Jr.
Probation Policies, Corrections Laws, And Sentencing Guidelines Systems: An Application Of Weber's And Ritzer's Typologies, Edward G. Simmons, Jr.
Theses & Honors Papers
The purpose of this thesis is to apply and extend the Weberian and Ritzerian typologies of formal rationality and “McDonaldization” to explain the development of Virginia’s sentencing guidelines system, recent changes in probation and parole policies, and changes in Virginia’s corrections laws. The theories of formal rationality and bureaucracy were utilized in a qualitative methodological approach. The present research suggested that the previously mentioned developments and changes were not a repudiation of earlier rehabilitative models nor were they an effort to move toward punitive correctional models. Rather, the changes were implicitly rationalized or “McDonaldized” the affected systems and procedures.

Survey Of Exotic Plants Along The Blue Ridge Parkway Between Lower Otter Creek And Sunset Field, Cynthia Diane Gastineau Lane
Theses & Honors Papers
The objective of this study was to identify and inventory exotic plant vegetation along a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway and to determine which species, if any, are invading the adjacent forest and the extent to which these invasions occur. The methods used were derived from those developed by James Akerson at Shenandoah National Park in 1997. Six transects were studied along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Each transect included two to five 100 square meter plots. The first plot of each site was centered at the border between the mowed area and the natural area. The second plots were …

Faulkner's Narrative In The Sound And The Fury And Absalom, Absalom!, Gerard Lassahn
Theses & Honors Papers
In this, the author compares and contrasts the use of narrative in two of William Faulkner’s most famous works, The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!. It also determines how narratives play a role in Faulkner’s work and how the reader understands the story. The author demonstrates how the narrative in Absalom, Absalom! seems to lead the reader farther away from characters while the narrative in The Sound and the Fury draws the reader closer to the characters as they are given insight into their thoughts and feelings.

Design And Implementation Of A Natural Resource Curriculum Guide Incorporating Selected Standards Of Learning At The Elementary Level, Martha Elizabeth Thompson
Theses & Honors Papers
The state Standards of Learning tests were given in 1998 and the results showed a 37% failure rate for science at the third grade level. This thesis project was meant to develop a way to improve these scores. An internship was completed at Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center where a natural resource curriculum guide was developed. The guide was developed using activities tested at the 4-H Center. Activities were chosen that met selected Standards of Learning. A copy of the activities has been placed in the Longwood College Library for use by both pre-service and classroom teachers.

The Election Of 1944 George C. Marshall, Thomas E. Dewey, And Magic, J. Shannon Royster
The Election Of 1944 George C. Marshall, Thomas E. Dewey, And Magic, J. Shannon Royster
Theses & Honors Papers
In the years between World War I and II, the United States was able to decode Japanese messages. This system, known as MAGIC, allowed them to decipher the Japanese messages that happened before Pearl Harbor. However, there was a concern among the administration that President Roosevelt may have known about the attack in Pearl Harbor before it ever happened. In the presidential election of 1944, Governor of New York Thomas E. Dewey learned of these secret messages and planned to relay this information to the public. Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall knew that Dewey wanted to release the …
