Measurement Of Transmission Efficiency Of Blue Light Blocking Devices, Jada Lee May 2024

Measurement Of Transmission Efficiency Of Blue Light Blocking Devices, Jada Lee

Honors Theses

Technology and light sources have experienced a revolution in recent years leading to the production of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. White-light LED bulbs undergo degradation over time, leading to a rise in color temperature and a proportional increase in the emission of blue light from these bulbs. The small size of LEDs makes them the optimal choice for electronic devices because of their limited screen size. This means that blue light now exists in red, green, and blue solid-state illumination systems that did not exist a decade ago. It is debated if blue light induces toxic effects on the …

A Survey Of Pet Caretakers On The Use And Perceptions Regarding Heartworm Prophylaxis For Prevention Of Canine Heartworm Disease, Stacie Williams, Charles T. Faulkner May 2024

A Survey Of Pet Caretakers On The Use And Perceptions Regarding Heartworm Prophylaxis For Prevention Of Canine Heartworm Disease, Stacie Williams, Charles T. Faulkner

Faculty Scholarly Content

Canine heartworm disease (CHWD) is caused by infection with the nematode parasite Dirofilaria immitis transmitted through the bite of a mosquito carrying the infective stage larva. The disease is insidious in its onset and almost 100% preventable with the use of highly effective pharmaceutical compounds that target the migrating larval stage acquired from the mosquito. However, use of canine heartworm prophylaxis among pet dog caretakers is not universally accepted and sometimes viewed with skepticism. Previous research conducted in the Cumberland Gap Region (CGR) indicated that 41.8% of dog owning individuals do not use prophylactic products. In this study, we surveyed …

Cat Color Theory: Can Cat Color Being Accurately Used To Predict Behavior, Emily Mears Apr 2024

Cat Color Theory: Can Cat Color Being Accurately Used To Predict Behavior, Emily Mears

Honors Theses

Is there scientific backing for "Tortie-tude" or "Orange Cat Behavior"? Many cat owners swear by these claims. Can coat color predict cat personality? If coat color is an accurate way to predict personality, the cat adoption process could be smoother. Also, veterinarians can be better prepared to avoid cat scratches and bites if they know a color is more likely aggressive. We made and distributed two surveys to determine the perception of personality by color and the actual personalities of cats. The first survey, "Cat Perception," was given to people who work with cats and, therefore, have interacted with a …

Employees who perceive value alignment report higher job satisfaction and relatedness. Prosocial cultures, rich in altruism and social responsibility, foster job fit and reduce dissatisfaction and turnover. Physical therapy's core values, including altruism and social responsibility, are integral to …

Anticipating The Needs Of Future Law Students Based On Current Post-Pandemic National Reading Comprehension Test Scores, Nicole R. Chong, J.D. Apr 2024

Anticipating The Needs Of Future Law Students Based On Current Post-Pandemic National Reading Comprehension Test Scores, Nicole R. Chong, J.D.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

The current state of education in the elementary, middle, and high school levels regarding students’ reading comprehension skills is bleak. Post-pandemic scores are showing up to a thirty-year backslide in reading comprehension testing scores. These concerning decreases do not bode well for students who may enter law schools one day. Let’s anticipate those needs by thinking ahead of ways to remedy potential shortcomings. Reading comprehension is tied closely to the skills of critical reading and thinking. Other scholars have written extensively in the legal academia field about critical reading and thinking. In fact, no one likely would dispute that critical …

Ethical Implications Of Utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Profession: A Cautionary Note On Potential Model Rules Of Professional Conduct Violations, Rachel Schworer Apr 2024

Ethical Implications Of Utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Profession: A Cautionary Note On Potential Model Rules Of Professional Conduct Violations, Rachel Schworer

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

The increased use of generative artificial intelligence (“GAI”) in the legal profession raises ethical questions. As a result, this note contemplates some state-adopted Model Rules of Professional Conduct that lawyers could violate if they improperly use GAI or fail to use GAI altogether. GAI enables lawyers to increase their efficiency, enhance their decision-making, and provide cost-efficient services to clients. However, GAI also presents lawyers with biased outputs, a lack of explainability, and hallucinations, as seen in recent cases when ChatGPT cited fictitious cases to lawyers. Lawyers must know all the benefits and risks to remain competent in this technology. They …

Generations Of Abuse: Exploring The Sexual Assault Epidemic On Native Land, Carly White Apr 2024

Generations Of Abuse: Exploring The Sexual Assault Epidemic On Native Land, Carly White

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

The United States government has a long history of extending its reach into the affairs of Native people. Yet, it has consistently failed to protect Native women from rampant violence and abuse. Native American women have the highest rates of sexual abuse in the country. The federal government has the decision to either mend its long-standing indifference toward Indigenous women or allow them to continue to suffer under the current system. This note explores the sexual assault crisis on Indian land and seeks to bring positive change to historically marginalized women. Specifically, this note highlights the need for Congress to …

Rethinking Law School Admissions, Carson Kovalic Apr 2024

Rethinking Law School Admissions, Carson Kovalic

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Taking the Law School Admissions Test ("LSAT") has been required for law school admission for almost a century. The exam has changed over the years, but a higher score on the LSAT has been a significant indicator of one’s acceptance into the vastly sought-after legal profession. This note addresses the changes needed to cater to more well-rounded law students and attorneys upon passing the bar exam. This note does not seek to eradicate the LSAT in its entirety; instead, law schools should place less emphasis on the LSAT and more on other factors such as undergraduate GPA, extracurriculars, and prior …

Where There’S An Electronic Will, There’S A Way: Evaluating The Potential Power Of Electronically Executed And Stored Wills For Appalachian Communities, Grace Keel Buchanan Apr 2024

Where There’S An Electronic Will, There’S A Way: Evaluating The Potential Power Of Electronically Executed And Stored Wills For Appalachian Communities, Grace Keel Buchanan

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Based on the rise of electronic media and the difficulty for lower-income communities, specifically rural Appalachia, to build intergenerational wealth, some states have enacted statutes allowing courts to hold electronically created and stored wills to be held valid. By analyzing the current precedent in the United States and beyond concerning electronic wills and the socioeconomic state of Appalachia, the note argues that states should enact legislation to change the Wills Act to give electronic wills in multiple forms full effect by probate courts as long as they are appropriately attested to electronically. The court should recognize the electronic will as …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Motivational Factors That Influence Elementary Teacher Retention In Urban Title I Schools, Patrice Y. Graham

Ed.D. Dissertations

National teacher shortages have received attention in the last few years, and researchers have projected turnover rates will grow in the upcoming years. As a result, districts and administrators were challenged to hire highly qualified teachers. More research is needed on why teachers remained in urban Title I schools. Due to the lack of research, further research was necessary to form a better understanding of increasing elementary school teacher retention. Elementary school teachers from one school district in Georgia responded to a questionnaire to explore the motivational factors influencing their retention in Title I schools. The 29 certified teachers indicated …

Adult Learning Theories: The Science Of How Your Students Learn, Melinda Turner Feb 2024

Adult Learning Theories: The Science Of How Your Students Learn, Melinda Turner

Other Scholarly Works

Before we can discuss the science of how your students learn, we need to discuss how you teach. Do you lecture only? If you engage students in the learning, how do you engage them? We will answer these questions as we dive into adult learning theories and the concept of andragogy (learning outcomes). An understanding of different adult learning theories helped faculty select the best instructional strategies, learning objectives, and assessment approaches (Mukhalalati & Taylor, 2019). Being able to draw on learning theories to explain the impact of individual student differences on their learning outcomes helped faculty understand the student …

The Influence Of Informal Teacher Leadership And Social Networks On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Rural Schools, Cassandra Doty

Ed.D. Dissertations

The number of formal teacher leadership roles, notably as instructional coaches and Professional Learning Community leaders, continued to increase. Rural school districts needed to improve their ability to create these roles. Additionally, researchers indicated many teachers preferred to avoid working with formal teacher leaders. The purpose of this basic, interpretive, qualitative study was to examine informal teacher leadership within the confines of social networks in rural schools and the influence of informal teacher leadership on the self-efficacy of other teachers when implementing instructional strategies. I utilized a questionnaire and snowball sampling, which led to 10 participants to gain insight into …

Bailing On The Bondsman: An Argument For Abolishing Monetary Bail, Sean Freeland M.S., J.D. Dec 2023

Bailing On The Bondsman: An Argument For Abolishing Monetary Bail, Sean Freeland M.S., J.D.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Money bail as a condition for pretrial release has existed throughout American history. Two out of every three inmates held in jails across the United States have not been tried for a crime and are only held because they cannot afford to pay the cost of their bail. The longer a defendant awaits trial in detention, the higher the chance they will be convicted of a crime and sentenced to a longer term than a defendant who is awarded pretrial release. The prolonged time awaiting trial in detention contributes to recidivism and increased criminalization for individuals and their communities. For …

Empowering The Eeoc: An Enforcement Strategy To Tackle Workplace Sexual Harassment, Noah Bloomberg J.D. Dec 2023

Empowering The Eeoc: An Enforcement Strategy To Tackle Workplace Sexual Harassment, Noah Bloomberg J.D.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

This Note argues that for Title VII to adequately combat workplace sexual harassment on a national scale, the EEOC needs stronger enforcement authority. Though Congress intended the EEOC to be the main mechanism for enforcing Title VII, it is currently too limited by federal law. Using the framework employed by the Obama Department of Education with Title IX, the EEOC can enforce Title VII in a way that not only remedies individual cases of widespread sexual harassment but also institutes a sea of change within workplace policies as a means of proactively addressing sexual misconduct, similar to how Title IX …

Lethal Injections: Protocol Plagued With Secrecy And Flaws Ushering In The New Era Of Botched Executions, Willow Van Skyhawk

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Since its adoption as the primary means of execution in the United States, lethal injections have exasperated issues of cruel and unusual punishment. Despite having the best public sentiment, lethal injection protocols are plagued with serious ethical concerns. The government’s attempt to humanize the death penalty resulted in medical abuse and botched executions. This Note explores such malign lethal injection protocols, the remedial efforts made to address such protocols, and whether the legal injection system can exist without harm. The reformation of lethal injection protocols is a societal responsibility. Americans must decide how comfortable society should be with the inconsistency …

Originalism's Time Machine: A Resurrected Relationship To The State, Douglas B. Mckechnie J.D. Dec 2023

Originalism's Time Machine: A Resurrected Relationship To The State, Douglas B. Mckechnie J.D.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

For almost sixty years, the constitutional understanding of physical autonomy in the U.S. included the right to end a pregnancy. This modern understanding of constitutional rights began with the Supreme Court’s evolutive interpretation of the Constitution in the mid-Twentieth Century and continued to expand into the Twenty-first Century. In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, however, the Court reasoned that the right to physical autonomy it had identified fifty years earlier, in Roe vs. Wade, was not deeply rooted in the nation’s history and thus wrongly established by the Court. This Originalist interpretation of the Constitution rearranged the constitutional order. …

Prosecutorial Misconduct: Conviction By Any Means Necessary, Walter W. Harding Jr. Dec 2023

Prosecutorial Misconduct: Conviction By Any Means Necessary, Walter W. Harding Jr.

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Prosecutors serve as advocates of victims and the community in criminal proceedings. Prosecutors’ primary role is to serve proper justice during these criminal proceedings. When the focus of the prosecutor is on quantity of convictions rather than quality of convictions, only injustice can result. Currently, prosecutors are expected to self-regulate their own offices to prevent prosecutorial misconduct. Yet, all attorneys and all judges have rules of professional and judicial responsibility to report such misconduct. Furthermore, sovereign and qualified immunity protects prosecutors, who commit misconduct, to gain convictions. There is a need to remove these immunity protections from prosecutors, who commit …

Doctoral Projects

Workplace aggression and violence toward healthcare workers are documented extensively throughout the literature and unfortunately, this behavior has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges brought on by the pandemic, such as visitor restrictions and short staffing, have only exacerbated patient aggression and violence. Workplace aggression and violence can cause not only psychological or physical injury to nurses and nursing staff, but it also impacts patient care, job satisfaction, absenteeism, and nurse retention. Training programs to improve nurses’ assessment skills to predict aggressive behaviors and de-escalate violent situations can help nurses better predict and manage patient aggression. A behavior management training …
