While "The literature on Judges is voluminous," one theme scarcely touched on in studies on this book is the role of the family. Women in Judges are often examined in relative isolation. These women need to be studied, however, not as stand-alone characters, but within the social context of their families. Also male characters in Judges should not be studied in isolation, but should be seen in the cultural setting as husbands, fathers, and leaders at various levels who are responsible to prepare the way for the future of Israel in successive generations.

A serious problem in Israel can be …

Femme Fatale Redux: Intertextual Connection To The Elijah/Jezebel Narratives In Mark 6:14–29, Gary E. Yates, David M. Hoffeditz Jan 2005

Femme Fatale Redux: Intertextual Connection To The Elijah/Jezebel Narratives In Mark 6:14–29, Gary E. Yates, David M. Hoffeditz

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

In this article we trace important intertextual connections between the pericopes of the beheading of John in Mark’s Gospel and the OT narratives surrounding the figures of Jezebel and Elijah. This form of intertextuality serves three key polemical purposes in Mark’s narrative: 1. to highlight the culpability and despicability of Herodias in having John put to death by depicting her as another Jezebel—the epitome of female wickedness in the OT; 2. to demonstrate the irony of reversal in that the OT narrative has the word of the prophet putting the wicked queen to death, while in the NT, the word …

Recent Perspectives On The Reliability Of The Gospels, Gary Habermas Jan 2005

Recent Perspectives On The Reliability Of The Gospels, Gary Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The usual attempts to defend the historical reliability of the New Testament are often fairly general in nature. These arguments are typically based on the quantity, quality, and early date of the available New Testament manuscripts; the traditional authorship of the books; extrabiblical confirmation; and a few archaeological discoveries. This evidence for the trustworthiness of the New Testament is often contrasted with ancient classical Greek and Roman writings, which do not exhibit the same wealth of data.

Lesser known among conservative scholars, however, are several, more recent and specific approaches that critical scholars apply to the Gospel texts. One of …

School Violence: Evaluation Of An Elementary School Peer Mediation Program, Rita Cantrell Schellenberg

Faculty Dissertations

Studies and statistical reports have revealed school violence as an issue of ongoing concern. Research has identified the media, early parent child interactions, and peer interactions as primary socializing agents in the development of aggression. Middle childhood, the elementary school years, has been identified as a key period of concern for the development of aggression and engaging in acts of violence. Studies have identified school-based peer mediation and conflict resolution programs, particularly those that incorporate cognitive behavioral approaches grounded in social learning theory, as tools for combating school violence. Peer mediation programs teach positive peer interactions and social skills to …
