Narrative Financial Therapy: Integrating A Financial Planning Approach With Therapeutic Theory, Megan A. Mccoy, D. Bruce Ross, Joseph W. Goetz
Narrative Financial Therapy: Integrating A Financial Planning Approach With Therapeutic Theory, Megan A. Mccoy, D. Bruce Ross, Joseph W. Goetz
Journal of Financial Therapy
The article serves as one of the first attempts to develop an integrated theoretical approach to financial therapy that can be used by practitioners from multiple disciplines. The presented approach integrates the components of the six-step financial planning process with components of empirically-supported therapeutic methods. This integration provides the foundation for a manualized approach to financial therapy, shaped by the writings of narrative theorists and select cognitive-behavioral interventions that can be used both by mental health and financial professionals.

Journal of Financial Therapy
A second profile of the Financial Therapy Association (FTA) membership was conducted to continue the development of financial therapy as a new area of practice and study. The FTA was established in 2010 as an effort to bring together practitioners and researchers from diverse disciplines to share in a common vision of financial therapy. This profile report depicts the demographic profile (e.g., age, education, gender, occupation, income) and perspectives of members who participated in the survey commissioned by the FTA Strategic Planning Committee in 2013. The results of the membership profile survey highlight the future directions of and the challenges …

Hoarding Disorder: It’S More Than Just An Obsession - Implications For Financial Therapists And Planners, Anthony Canale, Bradley Klontz
Journal of Financial Therapy
Compulsive hoarders feel emotional attachments to their money and possessions, making it difficult for them to spend or discard accumulated items. Traditionally, hoarding has been seen as a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). However, hoarding behavior can be a problem in its own right, without someone meeting the diagnostic criteria for OCD or OCPD. Despite being a mental health disorder that poses a serious public health problem, social costs to the public, and strain on families, there is little empirical work that has examined Hoarding Disorder (HD) from a financial perspective. As with …

Ancestor Worship In The Logic Of Games. How Foundational Were Aristotle's Contributions?, John Woods
Ancestor Worship In The Logic Of Games. How Foundational Were Aristotle's Contributions?, John Woods
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
Notwithstanding their technical virtuosity and growing presence in mainstream thinking, game theoretic logics have attracted a sceptical question: "Granted that logic can be done game theoretically, but what would justify the idea that this is the preferred way to do it?'' A recent suggestion is that at least part of the desired support might be found in the Greek dialectical writings. If so, perhaps we could say that those works possess a kind of foundational significance. The relation of being foundational for is interesting in its own right. In this paper, I explore its ancient applicability to relevant, paraconsistent and …
Games And Logic, Gabriel Sandu
Games And Logic, Gabriel Sandu
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
The idea behind these games is to obtain an alternative characterization of logical notions cherished by logicians such as truth in a model, or provability (in a formal system). We offer a quick survey of Hintikka's evaluation games, which offer an alternative notion of truth in a model for first-order langauges. These are win-lose, extensive games of perfect information. We then consider a variation of these games, IF games, which are win-lose extensive games of imperfect information. Both games presuppose that the meaning of the basic vocabulary of the language is given. To give an account of the linguistic conventions …
Constructive Type Theory And The Dialogical Approach To Meaning, Shahid Rahman, Nicolas Clerbout
Constructive Type Theory And The Dialogical Approach To Meaning, Shahid Rahman, Nicolas Clerbout
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
In its origins Dialogical logic constituted one part of a new movement called the Erlangen School or Erlangen Constructivism. Its goal was to provide a new start to a general theory of language and of science. According to the Erlangen-School, language is not just a fact that we discover, but a human cultural accomplishment whose construction reason can and should control. The resulting project of intentionally constructing a scientific language was called the Orthosprache-project. Unfortunately, the Orthosprache-project was not further developed and seemed to fade away. It is possible that one of the reasons for this fading away is that …
Ludics, Dialogue And Inferentialism, Alain Lecomte
Ludics, Dialogue And Inferentialism, Alain Lecomte
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
In this paper, we try to show that Ludics, a (pre-)logical framework invented by J-Y. Girard, enables us to rethink some of the relationships between Philosophy, Semantics and Pragmatics. In particular, Ludics helps to shed light on the nature of dialogue and to articulate features of Brandom's inferentialism.
Ptarithmetic, Giorgi Japaridze
Ptarithmetic, Giorgi Japaridze
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
The present article introduces ptarithmetic (short for “polynomial time arithmetic”) — a formal number theory similar to the well known Peano arithmetic, but based on the recently born computability logic instead of classical logic. The formulas of ptarithmetic represent interactive computational problems rather than just true/false statements, and their “truth” is understood as existence of a polynomial time solution. The system of ptarithmetic elaborated in this article is shown to be sound and complete. Sound in the sense that every theorem T of the system represents an interactive number-theoretic computational problem with a polynomial time solution and, furthermore, such a …
Argumentation And Inference: A Unified Approach, Christophe Fouqueré, Myriam Quatrini
Argumentation And Inference: A Unified Approach, Christophe Fouqueré, Myriam Quatrini
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
We propose in this paper to use Ludics as a unified framework for the analysis of dialogue and the reasoning system. Not only is Ludics a logical theory, but it may also be built by means of concepts of game theory. We first present the main concepts of Ludics. A design is an abstraction and a generalization of the concept of proof. Interaction between designs is equivalent to cut elimination or modus ponens in logical theories. It appears to be a natural means for representing dialogues and also for reasoning. A design is a set of sequences of alternate actions …
Antilogic, Benoît Castelnérac, Mathieu Marion
Antilogic, Benoît Castelnérac, Mathieu Marion
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
This paper is an interim report of joint work begun in (Castelnérac & Marion 2009) on dialectic from Parmenides to Aristotle. In the first part we present rules for dialectical games, understood as a specific form of antilogikê developed by philosophers, and explain some of the key concepts of these dialectical games in terms of ideas from game semantics. In the games we describe, for a thesis A asserted by the answerer, a questioner must elicit the answerer’s assent to further assertions B1, B2,…, Bn, which form a scoreboard from which the questioner seeks …
Trust And Risk In Games Of Partial Information, Robin Clark
Trust And Risk In Games Of Partial Information, Robin Clark
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
Games of partial information have been used to explicate Gricean implicature; their solution concept has been murky, however. In this paper, I will develop a simple solution concept that can be used to solve games of partial information, depending on the players' mutual trust and tolerance for risk. In addition, I will develop an approach to non-conventional quantity implicatures that relies on "face" (Goffman (1967), Brown and Levinson (1987)).

Editors' Introduction, Mathieu Marion, Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen
Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication
The idea of interpreting quantifiers in terms of a game between two players was first suggested at the end of the 19th century by one of the inventors of quantification theory, C. S. Peirce, but it laid buried in his papers until it was discovered in the 1980s. His idea was independently discovered in the 1950s, when Leon Henkin suggested a game semantics for infinitary languages. Paul Lorenzen introduced his Dialogspiele at the same time, while his student Kuno Lorenz introduced the vocabulary of game theory that led to our modern conception of game semantics shortly after. The idea …

Optimized Primers And Other Critical Conditions For Efficient Fusion Pcr To Generate Knockout Vectors In Filamentous Fungi., Nicholas Harrison, Brad Cavinder, Jeffrey P. Townsend, Frances Trail
Fungal Genetics Reports
Methods to streamline functional studies of large numbers of genes are essential to fully utilize the significant genomic resources now available for fungi. Fusion PCR is often used to join pieces of DNA together, particularly in the construction of DNA fragments for gene replacement in fungi. Here we present high-efficiency primers which reliably direct fusion and amplification to generate constructs for gene knockouts.

Evaluating The Long-Term Storage Of Cryphonectria Parasitica, Joshua C. Springer, Anita L. Davelos Baines, Matthew T. Chansler, Andrew M. Jarosz
Fungal Genetics Reports
Isolates of the Chestnut blight pathogen, Cryphonectria parasitica, from six populations in Michigan, were stored in the late 1990s as agar plugs of mycelium in vials of sterile water held at room temperature. Approximately 29% of the fungal isolates were infected with mycoviruses at the time of storage. Each isolate was tested for revivification effectiveness by taking aliquots from vials filled with agar plugs of C. parasitica and sterile water and plating onto potato dextrose agar. Average revivification success was 70.5% across populations with a range of 33—84% within populations. In situations where vials had dried out during storage, …

Persistence Among Deep Rural Communities In The Northern Plains, Revisited, Amber Anderson, George Langelett, Gary Aguiar, Brian Shuler, Meredith Redlin
Persistence Among Deep Rural Communities In The Northern Plains, Revisited, Amber Anderson, George Langelett, Gary Aguiar, Brian Shuler, Meredith Redlin
Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy
This research note revisits the question of rural persistence, which was first brought to light in this journal by Redlin et al. (2010). We follow Redlin et al’s example by employing county-level data and seek to identify small towns that are surviving to explain their persistence. Our effort to replicate their results begins with the collection of the data anew, but we also include two additional states and incorporate a time dimension. By using Census data from 2000 only, Redlin et al. applied a static approach to test their hypothesis. In this study, we collect data from 1990 as well …
Recruiting And Retaining Shareholders For Community Supported Agriculture In Texas, Kelsey Hall, Courtney Meyers, David Doerfert, Cindy Akers, Phillip Johnson
Recruiting And Retaining Shareholders For Community Supported Agriculture In Texas, Kelsey Hall, Courtney Meyers, David Doerfert, Cindy Akers, Phillip Johnson
Journal of Applied Communications
Community supported agriculture provided consumers, known as shareholders, with a share of locally grown products from a farm. Recruiting potential shareholders and retaining current shareholders were challenges for CSA owners since retention rate varied from 20%-70% for CSAs located throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to explore how Texas CSA shareholders received information about local food and how CSA owners have recruited new consumers and retained existing shareholders. A mixed methods collective case study approach was employed to collect data from an online quantitative survey from shareholders of three CSAs in Texas and qualitative interviews with …

A Case Study Of The Crisis Communications Used In The 2009 Salmonella Outbreak In Peanut Products, Erica Irlbeck, Jessica Fry Jennings, Courtney Meyers, Courtney Gibson, Todd Chambers
Journal of Applied Communications
The 2009 Salmonella outbreak in peanut products caused by contaminated peanut butter created a period of negative publicity for the peanut industry in the United States. It was one of many large food outbreaks the United States has seen in the past few years. Although one company was the cause of the outbreak, the peanut industry worked together to maintain its reputation. Crisis communications plans were put into effect, and crisis management teams worked together throughout. The purpose of this study was to examine the crisis communications efforts taken by peanut industry public relations practitioners during the 2009 Salmonella outbreak …
Using Video As A Replacement Or Complement For The Traditional Lecture/Demonstration Method In Agricultural Training In Rural Uganda, Tian Cai, Eric Abbott
Using Video As A Replacement Or Complement For The Traditional Lecture/Demonstration Method In Agricultural Training In Rural Uganda, Tian Cai, Eric Abbott
Journal of Applied Communications
This study explored the effectiveness of video as a tool to either complement or replace existing lecture-demonstration training for small farmer groups. The effectiveness of video in decreasing the knowledge gap among farmers who differ by gender was also evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through a quasi-experiment including a pretest and a posttest design with three experimental groups. Results showed that video could be an effective complement and replacement for the traditional lecture-demonstration training method. Video alone or video plus traditional lecture-demonstration was as effective as traditional training in increasing learning. The training method that included both video …

Planning And Evaluating Science Video Programs Using Communication Science, Joseph Cone, Kirsten Winters
Planning And Evaluating Science Video Programs Using Communication Science, Joseph Cone, Kirsten Winters
Journal of Applied Communications
Science-based videos could be of greater benefit to viewers if video producers understand what decisions and actions these audiences may be considering that can be affected by the videos. Such understanding may be developed through interviews, focus groups, and surveys, which should provide guidance for elements of both the style and content of the video production. The success of the videos in assisting viewers’ understanding and decision making should then be evaluated, for example through surveys, as described here. Following such a process may increase the effectiveness of such videos, thereby also improving the return on the producer’s investment in …
Picturing The Underserved Audience: Photovoice As Method In Applied Communication Research, Abigail S. Borron
Picturing The Underserved Audience: Photovoice As Method In Applied Communication Research, Abigail S. Borron
Journal of Applied Communications
The use of photographs in sociology and anthropology has grown over the last half of the 20th century, leading to various photo-based research methods that are intended to aid in building and enriching participant narratives. One specific photo-based method, known as photovoice, was developed for the purposes of enabling community members to capture photographs themselves in order to gain a deeper understanding of participant culture. In addition, it has the ability to visually portray and share experiences and knowledge about issues that otherwise would be difficult to explain through in-depth interviews alone. This professional development paper demonstrates the value of …
Agriculture At Eleven: Visual Rhetoric And News Media Portrayals Of Agriculture, Annie R. Specht, Tracy Rutherford
Agriculture At Eleven: Visual Rhetoric And News Media Portrayals Of Agriculture, Annie R. Specht, Tracy Rutherford
Journal of Applied Communications
Modern agricultural practices have become increasingly popular topics for news media outlets; thus, the growing scrutiny placed on production agriculture warrants a study of the images incorporated into television news stories of industry-related topics. Using a visual-rhetoric framework, the researchers conducted a survey of college students who were shown still images taken from a CBS Evening News broadcast about drug-resistant pathogens and their connection to antibiotic use in livestock. Participants were asked to identify the topic of the news story based on the images, to describe their affective response to that topic, and to identify the visual cues that led …
