An Evaluation Of Envy Within Adolescent Friendships, Natalie A. Pawluk '06 Jan 2006

An Evaluation Of Envy Within Adolescent Friendships, Natalie A. Pawluk '06

Honors Projects

Envy may be an unexplored component of adolescent social relationships. The main goal of the study was to determine if envy is experienced to a higher degree between best friends than with non-friends. A second goal was to assess the correlations between envy and friendship characteristics. A total of 109 seventh-grade students responded to 3 questionnaires, the Friendship Grid, the Best Friend/Non-Friend Envy Survey and the Friendship Qualities Questionnaire. No significant differences were found between reported envy for friends and non-friends. Envy significantly correlated with conflict (p < .01) and exclusivity (p < .05). A major challenge for future research is to develop a more accurate measure of envy-a survey format may not be the most useful technique. The relationship between envy and conflict and exclusivity demonstrates the importance of further research of envy in order to better understand the potentially negative effects of envy on friendships.

Emotional Knowledge Development In Preschoolers Receiving Head Start Services, Meghan E. Mcgrady '06 Jan 2006

Emotional Knowledge Development In Preschoolers Receiving Head Start Services, Meghan E. Mcgrady '06

Honors Projects

This study examined the ability of 3-to 5-year-olds (N = 76; 37 males, 39 females) receiving Head Start services to freely label six emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise) using photographs of facial expressions in condition 1 or stories containing an emotion-eliciting event and behavioral consequence in condition 2. The presentation of a story elicited better performance than the presentation of a facial expression for anger, fear, and disgust. After hearing the story, performance significantly improved for participants who initially incorrectly labeled photographs of facial expressions of anger, fear, disgust, and surprise, F(1, 68) = 119.10,p<.001. The addition of stories to the curriculum of current Head Start emotion knowledge programs may increase program effectiveness.

Conflict In Adolescent Friendships Across Cultures: Indonesia, South Korea And The United States, Melissa Mccandless '06 Jan 2006

Conflict In Adolescent Friendships Across Cultures: Indonesia, South Korea And The United States, Melissa Mccandless '06

Honors Projects

Traditionally, adolescence is conceptualized as a period of turmoil during which adolescents are moody, hostile and behave in maladaptive ways. In reality, this stage of development is not as terrible as the stereotypes suggest. Of particular interest during this time is an adolescent's experience of rapid physical, cognitive, and social changes which necessitate interpersonal adjustment to maintain positive relationships with others (Collins & Laursen, 1992). During this developmental period, there is a transformation in children's networks of interpersonal relationships in that there is a substantial increase in the relative importance of friends as confidants while dependence on parents falls as …

Detecting Suicide Risk In Adolescents In An Emergency Department: An Implementation Study, Rebecca L. Hahn Jan 2006

Detecting Suicide Risk In Adolescents In An Emergency Department: An Implementation Study, Rebecca L. Hahn

Honors Projects

A study was conducted to detect suicide risk in adolescents and adults seeking treatment in an Emergency Department (ED) in the Midwest, as well as to test the reliability, validity, and inter-rater reliability of the 4-item Risk of Suicide Questionnaire (RSQ) developed by Horowitz et al. (2001). The feasibility and need for the ED staff to conduct suicide screening of all patients who present to the ED was also assessed. This study expanded the implementation of the RSQ beyond its initial use with children and adolescents with psychiatric symptoms seeking treatment in a pediatric ED to include adolescent, adult, and …

An Euler-Type Formula For Ζ(2k +1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs Jan 2006

An Euler-Type Formula For Ζ(2k +1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs

Scholarship

In this short paper, we give several new formulas for ζ(n) when n is an odd positive integer. The method is based on a recent proof, due to H. Tsumura, of Euler’s classical result for even n. Our results illuminate the similarities between the even and odd cases, and may give some insight into why the odd case is much more difficult.

Numerical Approximation To Ζ(2n+1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs Jan 2006

Numerical Approximation To Ζ(2n+1), Tian-Xiao He, Michael Dancs

Scholarship

In this short paper, we establish a family of rapidly converging series expansions ζ(2n +1) by discretizing an integral representation given by Cvijovic and Klinowski [3] in Integral representations of the Riemann zeta function for odd-integer arguments, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 142 (2002) 435–439. The proofs are elementary, using basic properties of the Bernoulli polynomials.

Multivariate Expansion Associated With Sheffer-Type Polynomials And Operators, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue Jan 2006

Multivariate Expansion Associated With Sheffer-Type Polynomials And Operators, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

With the aid of multivariate Sheffer-type polynomials and differential operators, this paper provides two kinds of general expansion formulas, called respectively the first expansion formula and the second expansion formula, that yield a constructive solution to the problem of the expansion of A(ˆt)f([g(t)) (a composition of any given formal power series) and the expansion of the multivariate entire functions in terms of multivariate Sheffer-type polynomials, which may be considered an application of the first expansion formula and the Sheffer-type operators. The results are applicable to combinatorics and special function theory.

On The Convergence Of The Summation Formulas Constructed By Using A Symbolic Operator Approach, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue Jan 2006

On The Convergence Of The Summation Formulas Constructed By Using A Symbolic Operator Approach, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

This paper deals with the convergence of the summation of power series of the form Σa ≤ k ≤ bf(k)xk, where 0 ≤ a ≤ b < ∞, and {f(k)} is a given sequence of numbers with k ∈ [a, b) or f(t) a differentiable function defined on [a, b). Here, the summation is found by using the symbolic operator approach shown in [1]. We will give a different type of the remainder of the summation formulas. The convergence of the corresponding power series will be determined consequently. Several examples such as the generalized Euler's transformation series will also be given. In addition, we will compare the convergence of the given series transforms.

Masculinity Ideology And Forgiveness Of Racial Discrimination Among African American Men: Direct And Interactive Relationships, Wizdom Powell Hammond, Kira Hudson Banks, Jacqueline S. Mattis Jan 2006

Masculinity Ideology And Forgiveness Of Racial Discrimination Among African American Men: Direct And Interactive Relationships, Wizdom Powell Hammond, Kira Hudson Banks, Jacqueline S. Mattis

Scholarship

Forgiveness research has focused almost exclusively on interpersonal transgressions committed in close relationships. Consequently, less is known about factors informing forgiveness of non-intimate actors. The current study addresses these gaps by investigating correlates of forgiveness over racial discrimination among African American men (N=171). Specifically, we explore relationships between the endorsement of traditional masculine ideology (e.g., restrictive emotionality), overall forgiveness, forgiveness with positive affect, and forgiveness with the absence of negative affect. Links between personality, religiosity, social support, discrimination experiences, and these forms of forgiveness also are examined. Restrictive emotionality emerged as a barrier to forgiveness of discrimination. However, the relationship …

An Examination Of The African American Experience Of Everyday Discrimination And Symptoms Of Psychological Distress, Kira Hudson Banks, Laura P. Kohn-Wood, Michael Spencer Jan 2006

An Examination Of The African American Experience Of Everyday Discrimination And Symptoms Of Psychological Distress, Kira Hudson Banks, Laura P. Kohn-Wood, Michael Spencer

Scholarship

Current theoretical models suggest that the most potent and impacting discrimination experienced by African Americans in the post Jim Crow era are subtle and unconscious forms of discrimination that are experienced on a daily basis. This study investigates the relationship between perceived everyday discrimination and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Further, we examine gender as a moderator of this relationship. Data come from the 1995 Detroit Area Study data with 570 African American respondents. Results indicate that perceived discrimination is directly related to both symptoms of depression and anxiety. Gender moderates the relationship between discrimination and anxiety symptoms, but not discrimination …

A Survey Of Foreign-Educated Nurses: Workforce Experience, Melissa Giegerich Jan 2006

A Survey Of Foreign-Educated Nurses: Workforce Experience, Melissa Giegerich

Honors Projects

The United States (US) is currently undergoing a nursing shortage. As a result, many health care agencies in the US and around the world are turning to nurses educated in other countries to fill vacant positions. Despite the increased utilization of foreign-educated nurses, there is a lack of understanding of how these nurses transition into the US workforce. This study describes foreign-educated nurses who work in Illinois and the factors that affected their transition into the US professional nursing workforce. By focusing on nurses who were educated abroad and work in Illinois, this study will help Illinois nurses and Illinois …

Wit's Worth: A Reflection On Contemporary American Poetry On Created In Darkness By Troubled Americans, Michael Theune Jan 2006

Wit's Worth: A Reflection On Contemporary American Poetry On Created In Darkness By Troubled Americans, Michael Theune

Scholarship

Near the beginning of last century, Ezra Pound proclaimed that poetry should be at least as well-written as prose. Near the end of that same century, Charles Bernstein declared that poetry should be at least as interesting as TV. The start of a new century brings with it a new demand for poetry: poetry must be at least as witty, as knowing and as surprising as Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans. And, though it may not seem so at first, this silly—and disturbing, and wonderful—book offers serious lessons for and challenges to contemporary American poetry at all levels: from …

Construction Of Rational Points On Elliptic Curves Over Finite Fields, Andrew Shallue, Christiaan Van De Woestijne Jan 2006

Construction Of Rational Points On Elliptic Curves Over Finite Fields, Andrew Shallue, Christiaan Van De Woestijne

Scholarship

We give a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm that computes a nontrivial rational point on an elliptic curve over a finite field, given a Weierstrass equation for the curve. For this, we reduce the problem to the task of finding a rational point on a curve of genus zero.
