Parity-odd asymmetries in the electromagnetic decays of compound nuclei can sometimes be amplified above values expected from simple dimensional estimates by the complexity of compound nuclear states. Using a statistical approach, we estimate the root-mean-square of the distribution of expected parity-odd correlations (s) over right arrow (n)center dot(k) over right arrow (gamma), where (s) over right arrow (n) is the neutron spin and (k) over right arrow (gamma) is the momentum of the gamma, in the integrated gamma spectrum from the capture of cold polarized neutrons on Al, Cu, and In. We present measurements of the asymmetries in these and …

William Scales' 1789 "Mystery Of The People Called Shakers": Introduction, David D. Newell Oct 2006

William Scales' 1789 "Mystery Of The People Called Shakers": Introduction, David D. Newell

American Communal Societies Quarterly

William Scales is an elusive and intriguing figure in the history of early Shakerism. Scales was not a typical Shaker convert - he was a graduate of Harvard University, had been an itinerant Congregational minister, and had published two works prior to his conversion to Shakerism in 1782 or 1783. It is known that he wrote about Shakerism, both when he lived with Mother Ann Lee "and the elders with her" as well as afterwards, but until recently, it was presumed that none of his works about the Shakers had been published or survived in manuscript form. Scales' "The Mystery …

A reprint of an article appearing in the Boston Gazette, and the Country Journal. June 15, 1789. Issue 1810. Page 1.

"THIS piece is design'd for the conviction of the people called SHAKERS, and for the good of all generations; therefore I shall pretty much omit every thing else, and proceed directly to my great design, which I shall effect by a dialogue between the Elder of that people and myself the Author, and A will stand for Author, and E for Elder."

Front cover illustration: Hamilton College Library recently acquired Honey: Soul of Flowers to Sweeten the Soul of Man, a four-page price list from Mount Lebanon. The cover illustration is unusual and striking. Mary Richmond notes (Shaker Literature, no. 340) that W. H. Cathcart attributes the cover design to "Brother Peter Neagoe, a Roumanian living at the North Family, Mount Lebanon, N.Y. in 1906."

News And Notes, Walter A. Brumm

American Communal Societies Quarterly

If the first bit of news is Hamilton College's effort to showcase one of its special collections and to serve as a "connector" for researchers interested in all aspects of communitarian endeavors, the second is the reporting of events and activities which promote learning about the contributions of these communities to society at large. Serving as correspondent for several recent gatherings dealing with matters Shaker and Harmonist, I submit the following report.

Notions Of Progress, C. Waite Jun 2006

Notions Of Progress, C. Waite

Articles

The question of progress and a concern with relatedness are elements of the same puzzle. The very idea of progress, or lack of it, indicates something about the role machines can play in one’s life. Notions about how technology can be used – to improve, subvert, destroy, extend, or interrogate – reveal the interplay of human and machine. What notion of progress might adequately capture the complex interdependence of human and machine in a way that illuminates our current predicament? To ask whether specific events make things better or worse does not reveal what guides our notion of better and …
