White-Rot Fungi As Pretreatment Agents For Wood Destined For Biofuel Applications, Ryan M. Kalinoski
White-Rot Fungi As Pretreatment Agents For Wood Destined For Biofuel Applications, Ryan M. Kalinoski
Masters Theses
Efficient and economical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels is often hampered by the chemical recalcitrance of the material. Inexpensive and environmentally-friendly pretreatment processes are therefore desirable in order to lower the cost of biofuel production and minimize negative environmental impacts. To that end, we have explored the use of a naturally occurring white-rot fungus, Trametes versicolor, as a direct pretreatment agent for hardwood destined for biofuel applications. Specifically, we examined the pretreatment effects on the hardwood mixture after treatment with the wild-type strain of T. versicolor (52J) compared with those from a cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH)-deficient strain (m4D) , …
Theoretical Investigations Of Difluorobenzene Interacting With Ne And Infrared Analysis Of 1,1-Dichloroethylene From Synchrotron Data, Seri P. Kamari
Theoretical Investigations Of Difluorobenzene Interacting With Ne And Infrared Analysis Of 1,1-Dichloroethylene From Synchrotron Data, Seri P. Kamari
Masters Theses
The intermolecular interactions between two molecules are of great importance in proteins, polypeptides, DNA binding, and drug binding interactions. Dimers of chemical rings such as difluorobenzene with hydrogen containing molecules such as acetylene (HCCH) and atoms such as neon are classic systems for investigating weak interactions; however, the microwave spectrum of 1,2-difluorobenzene...Ne does not behave as expected. Possible explanation of this phenomenon is that there is some large amplitude motion perturbing the spectrum.
A computational study was performed to analyze the potential energy surface (PES) of Ne or Ar with ortho, meta, and para difluorobenzene, and reveal the …
The Recruitment Of Sexual Minority Students In Higher Education, Jorge El-Azar
The Recruitment Of Sexual Minority Students In Higher Education, Jorge El-Azar
Masters Theses
In a time when universities actively recruit diverse groups of applicants, some universities are seeing the need for a diverse student population and advancing their recruitment initiatives to recruit specific groups of students. The LGBTQ+ community has been perceived as an invisible community (Cegler, 2012) by some universities, but other higher education institutions are seeing the value of specifically recruiting students who identify as a part of this community. This study was designed to focus on the initiatives universities are implementing to effectively recruit students who identify as LGBTQ+. Using a qualitative approach, the researcher interviewed six participants who identified …
Transfer Students' Perceptions Of Their Academic Preparedness From Urban Community Colleges To Four-Year Institutions, Jazmine E. Thompson
Transfer Students' Perceptions Of Their Academic Preparedness From Urban Community Colleges To Four-Year Institutions, Jazmine E. Thompson
Masters Theses
This study was designed to investigate the perceptions of transfer students' academic preparedness from urban community colleges to four-year institutions. Within separate one-on-one interviews, four participants were asked a set of open-ended demographic and biographic questions regarding their community college experience. Through coding and analyzing participant responses several themes emerged, including (1) importance of relationships with faculty and staff, (2) departmental support, (3) academic preparation for a four-year university, (4) preparedness for university academic expectation, (5) learned academic strategies, (6) test-taking, (7) understanding environments and (8) utilization of professor and other strategies. Several conclusions of the present study were drawn …
What's Their Expiration Date? Age Discrimination In The Workplace, Bianca L. Tomlin
What's Their Expiration Date? Age Discrimination In The Workplace, Bianca L. Tomlin
Masters Theses
Age discrimination, although illegal, continues to have a presence within organizations against older individuals. Previous research on age discrimination has determined that the social identity of those older workers discriminated against are affected. This project examines how older workers are being discriminated against, how age discrimination affects the dignity of an older worker, and how age discrimination affects the professional identity of older workers. This study focuses on eleven white-collar workers, age 45-65 who have experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Analysis revealed that older workers found themselves being fired from organizations, barred from entry into organizations, and denied training …
Seeing Red In A Sea Of Green: Anthocyanin Production In A Carnivorous Plant, Pinguicula Planifolia, Jenna Annis
Seeing Red In A Sea Of Green: Anthocyanin Production In A Carnivorous Plant, Pinguicula Planifolia, Jenna Annis
Masters Theses
The Southeastern United States is a biological hot-spot for carnivorous plants, with over half of the North American species occurring along the Gulf Coast. Pinguicula planifolia Chapman is one of six carnivorous perennial butterwort species found in the Florida Panhandle. Among these species, only P. planifolia expresses a distinct variation of red coloration on its leaves. The functional role of foliar anthocyanins may include stress response to drought and nutrient deficiency, herbivory defense, free radical scavenging, and photoprotection. Carnivorous plant leaves face strong selection pressures to optimize prey capture and nutrient absorption. Given the frequency of these red pigments in …
Examination Of Externalizing Behaviors Within General Education, At-Risk, And Special Education Preschool-Aged Classrooms, Rebecca A. Rader
Examination Of Externalizing Behaviors Within General Education, At-Risk, And Special Education Preschool-Aged Classrooms, Rebecca A. Rader
Masters Theses
This study examined the natural occurrence of externalizing behaviors within six preschool classrooms (two general education classrooms, two at-risk classrooms, and two special education classrooms). Approximately 100 direct observation minutes were collected in each of the six classrooms to obtain measures of student off-task and disruptive behavior. No significant off-task differences were found across the three classroom types. However, a significant difference in disruptive behavior was found between special education and general education classrooms and also between special education and at-risk classrooms. The most commonly observed disruptive behaviors across all six classrooms were talking out, being out of area, and …
Demographics And Parasites Of Spotted Bass In The Wabash River, Evan C. Boone
Demographics And Parasites Of Spotted Bass In The Wabash River, Evan C. Boone
Masters Theses
Spotted Bass Micropterus punctulatus Rafinesque are a popular sport fish primarily found in the streams and reservoirs of the south. The Wabash River, a large tributary of the Ohio River, contains a naturally reproducing population on the northern boundary of their range. Currently, the lower Wabash River is monitored using two different sampling designs, the Long Term Electrofishing Program monitors community assemblages using stratified random sampling whereas the Illinois Department of Natural Resources uses a fixed sampling design. Due to the wide distribution but low abundance of Spotted Bass throughout this drainage, captures from each design were compared to assess …
Development Of Learning Objectives For An Undergraduate Computer-Aided Drafting And Design Animation Using The Delphi Technique, Gavin M. Wilk
Development Of Learning Objectives For An Undergraduate Computer-Aided Drafting And Design Animation Using The Delphi Technique, Gavin M. Wilk
Masters Theses
This study reflects on learning objectives created for an advanced computer aided drafting (CAD) learning module(s) or course with the emphasis on simulation and engineering animations. These objectives were derived by using the Delphi technique by access the support of a panel of subject matter experts (SME) from academia and industry that are interested in CAD. The results of this study are intended for the use of creating instructional modules for undergraduate studies.
A panel of experts were chosen through an electronic listserv of engineering and technology supporters. Two rounds of two different Delphi survey instruments were utilized to complete …
